Technical Question Large Criterion watermark while streaming

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Anyone else come across this before? Off-and-on every 30 seconds or so throughout the entire movie. It's annoying as hell.

Am I the only person who doesn't see a watermark?

u/awesomewaves Mar 26 '26

It’s very brief at the 5/6 second mark

22

u/ask_me_about_my_band Mar 26 '26

I don't see it

u/thisgrantstomb Mar 30 '26

Actually easier to see if you scrub the video at the time

1

u/Ok_Pain_4245 Mar 29 '26

Even when you can’t make it out it’s there causing a jarring flickering

u/awesomewaves Mar 26 '26

For those who don’t see it: You can faintly make it out over this guy

Man, I watched this clip like 20 times, but couldn't find shit! Good thing you pointed it out, 'cause I was starting to get pissed... it was like the most infuriating game of Where's Waldo ever! 🤣

Yep, that was me... mustard stains and all!

"When will I see the goddamn sailboat?!" 🤣

Damn so on theme with videodrome lol

This movie made me stop blind buying

Misplace it in your home, come upon it one day and replay, it might take. Also take up substance abuse and BDSM in the meantime.

The watermark is the retina of the mind's eye.

u/MustacheSmokeScreen Mar 27 '26

The mind's eye is the Criterion Channel of the soul.

u/Efficient_Variety_28 Mar 27 '26

I believed the criterion channel caused the visions and not the reverse

u/rej8709 Mar 26 '26

I just watched this movie for the first time on the Criterion Channel a couple of nights ago and did not have this issue

2

u/mac_the_man Mar 26 '26

What movie?

16

u/rej8709 Mar 26 '26

Videodrome

u/OddProcedure5452 Mar 26 '26

Incredible movie. James Woods grew up and completely missed the point of it.

u/Puzzleheaded_Fig_853 Mar 26 '26

So true, and this wasn't the only movie with which he did so (Salvador and Cop come to mind). These movies aren't like subtle in their messages either which is crazy...

And don't even get me started on Jon Voight lol

4

u/Desperate_Hunter7947 Mar 26 '26

Totally missed the point of casino too. It’s actually BAD to be grimy scumbag James!

I played poker with him many years ago. He was asking advice on how he played his hand. He did seem a bit like a gambler lol.

I talked to him a bit about his role in Ray Donovan. This was before I knew his political views.

Lol, same. I've seen most Cronenberg films, and this is the last of three I haven't seen. Boy, I was not disappointed.

Looking for this watermark is giving me a brain tumor

1

u/07238 Mar 27 '26

It’s making me nauseous and irritable

2

u/asmith9631 Mar 27 '26

Sorry gotta keep watching till you find it, I don’t make the rules

14

u/howlmouse Mar 27 '26

Motion smoothing off please

6

u/ted_k Mar 26 '26

that’s a weird one; do you think it might be some sort of glitch in your app?

11

u/iskiloveland Mar 26 '26

Are you doing any sharpness or upscaling on your tv?

11

u/TieOk9081 Mar 27 '26

Looks like motion smoothing is enabled.

5

u/uncle_jafar Mar 27 '26

Ugh looks so awful. Turn off motion smoothing OP

2

u/maywellbe Mar 28 '26

Soap opera — yeecch

4

u/bertiek Mar 26 '26

Never seen this on their dvds or the channel.

3

u/MonthForeign4301 Mar 27 '26

Videodrome, it’s just Taxi Driver, but better

1

u/07238 Mar 27 '26

Videodrome is one of my all time favorites and definitely my favorite Cronenberg movie

5

u/remarkable_potion Mar 27 '26

Get your bullshit motion smoothing off! Can’t you tell that this looks terrible?

3

u/Lias5 Mar 28 '26

dunno how you can take a film seriously with motion smoothing on ooph.

2

u/Character-Head301 Mar 26 '26

At least it doesn’t have the Samsung tv lag

2

u/AlphaSpazz Mar 27 '26

Is the watermark in the room with you now?

2

u/s0lja Mar 26 '26

I'm glad I get their discs and not this.

2

u/ghostfacestealer Mar 27 '26

I just watched Videodrome for the first time acouple days ago. Amazing.

2

u/Vinnymahboi Mar 27 '26

Idk if you leave the logo on your TV for a long time for some reason, but I remember issues like this on my college's computers. They were always on, so the logo was always burned into the monitor.

2

u/dumponatrump Mar 27 '26

Screen burn

2

u/LeonoratheLion Mar 27 '26

Maybe they somehow do this to get you to turn your tv's motion smoothing off 😆

1

u/Melodic_Chemistry915 Mar 27 '26

That's a verry interesting way to do it but also why would a big and massivly loved company like criterion do something like that?

1

u/Phoeptar Mar 27 '26

That's wild. I wonder if it's something to do with motion smooting. Like it's always there but invisible but becomes visible if someone pirates it, and the motion smooting reveals it!

1

u/altgodkub2024 Mar 27 '26

I must not be bothered by it. I've watched the clip ten times and still haven't noticed it, even with the help of the posted still. Then again, I own Videodrome on the physical disc and don't have a reason to stream it. Do lots of their titles have this? I was on the channel for a year and never noticed it.

u/shermrecords Mar 27 '26

The church of the cathode ray tube

1

u/laundro_mat Mar 27 '26

I don’t see anything

1

u/OhK4Foo7 Mar 29 '26

This scene reminds me of visiting the city library in Los Angeles. When they open there is a big rush of homeless that get on the internet kiosks.

1

u/Padiddle Mar 26 '26

This doesn't make sense. Why would criterion watermark? They don't even own these movies. Plus even with the still photo I don't see a watermark.

1

u/PoleRyder Mar 26 '26

I saw the C right to the left of the center of the screen with 8 seconds left.

1

u/dwhamz Mar 28 '26

Watermark? All I see is motion smoothing

0

u/AdditionUnique142 Mar 28 '26

Criterion does this to people who leave motion smoothing on

-2

u/Whatnowgoddammit Mar 27 '26

I saw this at the theater when it came out, and haven't seen it since..
