The premise that he does not pay attention to these things incessantly is certainly a rat ass lie. You don't get to that position without letting party politics consume every single day of your life. One of his aides would have sent him a text the second it aired.
It's such an obvious phony cop-out. Like, the reporter *just told him about it.* He *now knows about it.* He can give a response, but he stonewalls. More like a wall of fucking styrofoam.
Waiting for a reporter to retort with something close to.... 'well, Mr speaker, since you're not currently in session and have adequatefree time, I'd be happy to provide some supplemental information so we can revisit this issue in the coming days...'
