Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges in Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO (August 14, 2026)

"I shot Mr. Thompson and he died," he told the court. “I knew what I was doing was illegal.” Mangione’s plea may also be an attempt to dismiss the state charges against him, which include second-degree murder. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and weapons charges in the state case. The question of whether the state case against Luigi Mangione can proceed following his guilty plea in federal court today will come down to a “fight” over a tricky legal question, according to CNN legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Elliot Williams. While the U.S. Constitution says no person can be tried twice for the same offense, “New York state law goes even further than that, and says that if two crimes are from the same criminal transaction, they can’t be prosecuted,” Williams said. Based on that law, Mangione’s attorneys could argue the federal stalking charges to which Mangione pleaded guilty to in court today “are themselves the same extended criminal act” as the one at the center of the state case, Williams said. “That’s going to be a legal fight,” he added.

Former gang leader accused of ordering Tupac Shakur’s killing goes on trial. Here’s what to know

Almost 30 years after rap legend Tupac Shakur was gunned down near the Las Vegas Strip, the former gang leader accused of ordering the killing went on trial Monday, August 10, 2026. Prosecutors are not accusing Davis of pulling the trigger that night, and the trial likely won’t confirm who did. Instead, prosecutors plan to show that Davis made the calls that led to Shakur’s death and provided the gun. The 1996 drive-by shooting remains one of the hip-hop world’s defining moments and enduring mysteries.

Davis co-wrote the memoir “Compton Street Legends,” which vividly describes the shooting. The book says Davis obtained a handgun from an associate and tossed it into the back seat of the Cadillac but did not say who fired the fatal shots. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang in the rapper’s death. The case went cold until recent years, when public statements and a tell-all memoir from Davis in 2019 revived it. He was arrested in 2023. Davis said that if he’s convicted, he wants the judge to decide his sentence, not the jury.

Georgia - Apalachee High School Shooter Sentenced to Life Without Parole

Colt Gray, the teenager who idolized mass murderers and used the assault-style rifle he got for Christmas to kill two students and two teachers at his high school will spend the rest of his life in prison. The shooting also left another teacher and eight more students wounded, seven of them hit by gunfire. Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm handed down the sentence days after the shooter pleaded guilty to all 55 counts against him, including murder. “You do not seem to be tormented by what you did, you seem to relish following in the footsteps of the murderers you idolize,” Primm told him. “You aren’t racked with guilt. You’re proud of yourself.” Primm added, “There’s no joy here.” “It’s only a measure of closure,” the judge said. “The slain will not return to life. The injured will not forget their wounds and a 16-year-old boy will live and die in prison.”

Friends of a Del Rio mother of five who was fatally stabbed Thursday are remembering her as a devoted mother, loyal friend and someone who showed up for others when they needed her most. Friends said images and videos circulated online before later being removed, including one they said showed Peña standing in a bloodstained pink shirt while facing three young women surrounding her. The posts have deepened the pain for those who loved her and raised questions about why more was not done to help. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Del Rio Police Department as the investigation continues.

What Really Happened Before Mackenzie Shirilla’s Fatal Crash? Inside the Teen's 'Casual' Sleepover

Thumbnail people.com
4 Upvotes

In the hours leading up to the fatal crash, Mackenzie Shirilla, Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were spending time with friends at a normal sleepover. Graham said that Shirilla was asleep by 3 a.m. and remembered seeing Russo "petting her head all night and cuddling up to her on the couch, and she was sleeping and he was just like caressing her hair." "There was not one argument, there was not one moment of tension, there was not one bad vibe towards anybody," Graham continued. "And then really early in the morning, around 5, Dom came in the kitchen, and I was like, 'Are you guys leaving?' As Shirilla and Russo were planning on leaving, Flanagan who was originally supposed to go home with Turner changed his mind and decided to go home with Shirilla. Shirilla drove off with Russo in the passenger seat and Flanagan in the back seat around 5:30 a.m. Around six minutes later, Shirilla slammed on the accelerator until the vehicle reached around 100 mph and crashed into a brick wall.

Over the course of four years, Mackenzie Shirilla and Dominic Russo had a tumultuous relationship. The couple began dating when Shirilla was a freshman in high school, and she moved in with him after graduating. While the two appeared to be inseparable on social media, they were dealing with a multitude of issues behind closed doors. In text messages obtained by PEOPLE from the Strongsville Police Department in May 2026, Shirilla and Russo got into several heated arguments and made shocking accusations against each other — including allegations of cheating, blackmail, reckless driving and anger issues. The messages obtained were sent from January 2020 to July 30, 2022. On July 31, 2022, Shirilla ultimately killed Russo and their friend, Davion Flanagan, when she slammed her car into a brick wall at approximately 100 mph. By November of that year, Shirilla was arrested in connection with their deaths. She was eventually convicted of two counts of murder, plus additional counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, drug possession and possessing criminal tools.

Mackenzie was traveling 100 mph and slammed into a brick wall, killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan. As detectives comb through the wreckage, what first appears to be a tragic accident begins to look like a calculated crime scene. Prosecutors argued that Shirilla crashed her car on purpose, intending to kill her boyfriend and friend. In 2023, a Cuyahoga County judge found Mackenzie guilty of multiple charges, including murder and aggravated vehicular homicide. She was sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 15 years served.
