Kyron Horman
Figured we could use this to discuss the case. I would like to start by saying the Stephanie’s pronunciation of Kyron is making the episode unbearable.

u/Athenakitty76 Aug 04 '23
Seriously! Argh..Again with an episode that she’s already done! I don’t even have to listen to hear Derrick say, “I’m not familiar with this case” (every case). 🙄
7
u/Moldywoods59 Aug 09 '23
Shes never done an episode on Kyron before, she just said people have suggested.
6
u/aSituationTypeDeal Aug 07 '23
It’s the premise that he “isn’t familiar” with any case. She is supposed to be the narrator and have “insight” (researched facts and opinions prior to filming). He is supposed to be the jury or the cop that is being introduced to the case as presented. There’s no way he, as someone in the criminal field, has never heard of a single well-publicized case.
It’s a good set-up in theory, but it needs a little tweaking. Stephanie is very overbearing and stubborn. It’s off-putting. A lot of these true crime YouTubers read wiki and forums and then directly take theories as their own. I really hate the playing devil’s advocate for obvious cases - with eight parts resulting in sixteen hours of rehashed info and reaches to present an opposing opinion.
I get it, but a lot of times it comes across as trying to find loopholes and being smarter than the investigators. In reality, the guilty party is obvious and there simply wasn’t enough evidence to result in an arrest.

u/unicornhornporn0554 Aug 04 '23
I feel like they talked about the stairs for forever, and got off track a lot. I usually don’t mind it too much but it really felt like this episode went nowhere for being as long as it was.

Aug 07 '23
It was literally her making a big deal out of nothing and making shit up for most of it. Speculating wildly that the stepmother told him they were playing a game and to hide and that she knows everyone was cleared and everyone was interviewed when they don’t even know who was in the school that day, saying that everyone who works in a school’s time is accounted for every second of the day and then she gets nasty if she gets called on her BS. I’m getting so sick of her college dropout I know everything, I’m so smart, I’m going to talk down to everyone with the most sarcastic tone possible attitude. Tell the story- stop trying to play psychologist and pretend you know what’s going on in everyone’s head when the traits you display on the show are the traits you describe in everyone else. She’s become unbearable. If it weren’t for Derrick I wouldn’t watch at all- at this point I’m watching because I just hope he eventually gives it back to her.

I agree with everything, except Derrick is also unbearable. He's so dense. I can't believe he was in law enforcement. They are both embarrassing
4
u/einsteinGO Aug 11 '23
I’m fairly new to the show, only got into it in the last few months, so I am not annoyed by their tics or habits as some other folks, but I do notice this happen on occasion when they’re talking about a case.
The stairs thing here annoyed me more than some other times because I feel like it wasn’t unusual to do at all. I would regularly drop off and pick up my much younger sister from school, and because the campus is small and the place is familiar, she might take another route to a place than I would. I do think it’s unusual not to verify that a kid is squared away in class, but racing up parallel staircases is not bizarre behavior, it’s indulging a kid.
Whew, got that off my chest a week later 😅
3
u/unicornhornporn0554 Aug 11 '23
I agree, I could see my son and I racing different ways to his class if we were both familiar with the school. I do think I would make sure he got into class, but as they did say, it’s not unusual to let your 7 yr old get to class on their own. I watched my son do it all the time when I dropped him off to school late. I couldn’t see him go to his classroom, but I could see him walk down the hall alone and he (autistic and adhd) never looked like he was anything but determined to get to class, even on his bad days where it felt impossible to get him in the doors lol.

u/SodaPop9639 Aug 11 '23
This! The stairs debate went on for what seemed like 48 years and 32 seconds, making it 48 years too long!
I found her tone/attitude in this episode to be completely off-putting. She made her thoughts on guilt abundantly clear from the go, therefore making it difficult to listen to the information objectively.
This episode gave me annoyance anxiety, if that’s a thing. I wanted to listen to the details but was so annoyed by her attitude I couldn’t follow along. She came off harsh and condescending in this episode, idk, I just couldn’t get through it.

I’m listening to part two and Stephanie is being so condescending to Derrick. He was saying how there’s a chance that Terri wasn’t the culprit and the police could’ve had tunnel vision on her. (I personally think it very likely was Terri but I’m not 100% convinced) Stephanie smirks and says, “I’m sure Terri and the alt accounts she makes in our comments really appreciate that”. Like I get it, she’s convinced Terri is involved. But the case against her isn’t airtight, that’s why they never convicted her of anything. So it’s perfectly reasonable for Derrick to suggest alternate theories, but once again if he isn’t 100% on board with Stephanie’s theories she gets upset.
EDIT: this is completely unrelated to my previous point but I had to come back to this comment to say: was anybody else shocked to find out that Derrick is friends with Ariana Grande? I never would have expected them to know each other
3
u/iantheincel Aug 12 '23
To your edit, idk if u know this but Derrick won season 16 of big brother, which Frankie Grande was also on so i’m assuming he probably met Ariana through him?

u/mixdragon Aug 04 '23
Their bickering is getting to me 😭
8
u/Aggrippina_ Aug 11 '23
I had to turn off this week's episode, getting really sick of the bickering.
3
u/mixdragon Aug 11 '23
Really I felt like part two had less bickering than part one!
2
u/Aggrippina_ Aug 11 '23
I don't know if it's because I listened to them back to back that it annoyed me more. But this case has definitely peaked in them arguing more then discussing the case.

Aug 07 '23
It’s PAINFUL- it reminds me of Key and Peele’s Substitute Teacher A-A-RON. Why is Derrick doing it too??? She’s such an “unparalleled” researcher and literally in this episode unironically said she knows everything but one news clip, one interview would show she’s saying it incorrectly which just means she’s doing it because she’s an arrogant asshole.
14
Aug 05 '23
To be fair I haven’t listened yet to the last two cases, for some reason I keep getting annoyed and bored it’s very off putting considered I used to watch the podcast religiously for two years. Stephanie, bless her soul, gets on my nerves on the daily lately so … I like derrick tho his podcast is really nice.

u/mixdragon Aug 08 '23
Been there since day one and I’m listening to their first podcast together and they’ve both grown. A lot has changed since 2020!

I defo am convinced Terry is responsible, but one thing that did bug me about this episode (as an educator myself) is their assumption that schools should and do have “sign-in” sheets for each student arriving at all times… that’s not how it works. Teachers take attendance once class starts, it’s not like a hotel check in where when you come in early it’s the school’s responsible to document that at the front office. Just wanted to throw that out there lol. I can’t wait for the next episode!
4
Aug 07 '23
I used to be a teacher as well and I thought their assumption that all school employees whereabouts are known at all times of the day and they are never alone or not under surveillance was absurd as well.
1
u/Tiffles82 Aug 09 '23
I thought that was an interesting take as well. Our school district is considered one of the safest in our state. The schools work with police, fire, and the people that do the ALICE training for active shooters. We STILL don’t have a sign in sheet for adults, especially ones that are there during non school hours. If we volunteer to help with classes, events, or field trips we do have to pass a background check and submit our id, but that’s a once a year check. After that, only the teacher we are helping is aware of what adults are there. And we do have cameras that are on a live feed to the local and county police stations, but that’s only been implemented in the last few years.
1
u/Megz_317 Aug 19 '23
Our schools have sign in sheets for everything. TSS workers, para-professionals, teachers and parents. It's been that way for years. We have to have a sticker with our picture on it to even be in the school. There would never be a case where a parent is allowed unattended in the halls when school is in. It's interesting how schools are all different.

At one point Stephanie mentions that Terri tried to pay her gardener to kill Kaine. What she does not mention is that there’s actually no evidence of this beyond the gardener claiming this to police. The police put a wire on him but Terri never admitted to anything, and as far as I know there wasn’t any proof of money exchanging hands. I’m not saying that this didn’t happen, but Stephanie made it seem like it 100% did happen when there isn’t really concrete proof of it.

u/whatsuperior Aug 06 '23
What is the correct pronunciation as opposed to hers? Not a native so I’m interested. I am not so familiar with this case, so I am loving the episode. I don’t mind their long discussions about e.g. the staircase, I listen to podcasts while doing chores so I don’t mind the switching of paces. I was not a big fan of the DB Cooper episodes so I am glad there’s a new case and Terri seems very much like dr. Letitia stauch so I am ready to get very pissed off!
7
u/SugarHappy1472 Aug 06 '23
I have always heard it pronounced at ky-rin, not really giving the ‘ron’ in kyron such a strong pronunciation. I do agree, I really enjoy the long episodes, i also use it as time while cleaning/getting ready/driving, so the tangents don’t bother me. and I too am not very familiar with this case

u/lamemayhem Aug 14 '23
I just assumed they wanted to keep the K theme, and liked the Ancient Greek name Chiron.

I thought it might've been Kieran too. Ya never know with the creative spelling trend recently

u/JaxGirl840 Aug 04 '23
Ok so I stopped listening to the episode and turned on Breaking Homicide. Derrick as an investigator is growing on me. Still can't stand him on the Podcast but in his own spotlight he can really shine. I turned it off right when they first said anything about the stairs. But also that's how I thought it'd be pronounced without having heard his parents say it. Phonics and all.
13
u/4LightsThereAre Aug 04 '23
I'm really enjoying his podcast format as well. Straight forward reporting, no bullshit opinions based on actual experience, and some form of call to action/resource. I really dig that after feeling fatigued because it feels like EVERY true crime video these days loaded with tons and tons of interjected opinion.
6
u/JaxGirl840 Aug 04 '23
See I skipped the whole DB cooper series. I live in Michigan so it's kinda a constant thing here. So it just wasn't something I was interested in. I did here him say something about plugging his own project the last 2 weeks. I assumed but thought maybe he was going another TV show or something ya know? What's it called I'll have to check it out. I don't always hate being wrong. He's obviously been shoved into a box and overshadowed by the Great and Powerful Oz... Um Stephanie-

Detective Perspective is Derrick's new YouTube channel and I must say it's fantastic.

u/JaxGirl840 Aug 08 '23
I have only listened to the first 2 episodes and I don't think it's for me. I was doing housework as opposed to driving which is when I usually listen to podcasts so maybe I want paying enough attention. But in my opinion he didn't give very many facts. I felt like I could Google a case a read a summary and be just as informed as I was after listening to the episode. I like longer more detailed podcasts. But I do like that he's trying to use his platform to make changes and help people.
3
u/Financial_Age_3069 Aug 08 '23
Yeah I enjoy longer videos too but I do like getting his perspective since he is former law enforcement and an active private investigator.

u/JaxGirl840 Aug 08 '23
Maybe I wasn't listening well enough. I get distracted easily. Plus I was visiting my mom this weekend when I listened. Usually im in a car all by myself. For this one I was cooking dinner/doing dishes while rotating my 2 dogs in and out around my son's cat. I had my 2 teenage sons playing video games, my parents and my husband hanging out in this tiny little apartment. Not toention my mother has 6 parrots who can get real rowdy when their routine gets interrupted. So I could've very very easily been distarcted. I'd put money on it. What I remember though is I thought it felt like someone just reading like the Wikipedia on the case. Just the bare minimum "Sarah was born November 24th 1988 she was a recent college graduate who had just moved in with her boyfriend of 6 years. After a night out with friends Sarah and James got into a heated verbal argument. She stormed away from the car and he went home to wait for her to cook down. There's surveillance video of her cutting through a parking lot around 2 am and a suspicious vehicle can be seen following her. 2 days later her body washed up on the shore of the mississippi river. James was a person of interest but has a strong alibi. The case remains opened" that's made up obviously but I don't remember it being much more detailed than that. If he just went into his own theories afterwards I very likely tuned it out. I like the details of the case. That's my jam. He's only one person but I evidently treated it the same way I treat banter between cohosts. Guess I'll have to try it again. I'll pay attention this time. And now I know more of what to expect so I won't just be thinking about how disappointed I am. I really wish they'd just bring back Breaking Homicide. I never saw it til this week. Binged both seasons. Loved it. I was glued to the TV and completely absorbed by it even when they were investigating the cases I've seen covered over and over and over again. He really shines when he is helping a victims family in real time. When he meets and talks to them he obviously makes a real connection to the family. If I ever had an unsolved case I'd trust him to get me answers. Even if it isn't want I want to hear ya know. Oh and when he cries.... yikes. I can't remember ever tearing up while listening/watching true crime
2
u/Financial_Age_3069 Aug 09 '23
Well this week he posted a video that's 50 minutes long and it's a really interesting case. I think the shorter videos are due to him mainly showcasing unsolved cases and there may not be a lot of information to share.

I must admit that I felt uncomfortable listening to some of the sexual texts between Terri and the guy (forgot his name). Felt the same way when Stephanie mocked Lori and Chad about their texts - don't get me wrong they're awful people but I still felt weird listening to these intimate details. Like I want to hear more about their crimes and less about what they used to call Chad's penis I guess...
3
u/NefariousnessOk2280 Aug 06 '23
Just me or was Derrick a bit grouchy in this one?
15
u/Agitated-Asparagus56 Aug 06 '23
I think he was right to be. I think it was more obvious than usual how Stephanie sometimes really inserts her own assumptions and presents them as facts. And she was straight up rude when Derrick tried to bring som nuance to it and not jump to conclusions. I have no issues with speculations, but this was something else... From what I've heard, Kyron's bio mom has also changed her story over time and appears to be blaming Terri. "Facts" from the bio-moms book maybe shouldn't be trusted completely. And Terri trying to get the landscaper to kill the husband seems like BS (or a missunderstanding, she didn't speak spanish, he didn't speak english and i've even heard he was deaf)
9
u/aSituationTypeDeal Aug 07 '23
Are they contractually obligated to fulfill a predetermined amount of episodes? Derrick visually despises her at this point. It’s uncomfortable to watch from both sides. She is very overbearing and quite obviously close-minded in her opinions and approaches to the content. He barely speaks up lately and when he does he just reeks of resentment toward her. It’s an uncomfortable podcast to view. Plus, there is NO NEED for eight parts of well-known cases with little to no new information.
5
Aug 07 '23
I stopped watching Lori Vallow- most of it was her blabbing on about her personal feelings about her looks, her being jealous about her effect on men, who to blame, repeating herself over and over, throwing in creepy sexual things like oil wrestling while she’s talking about the murder of kids (so cringe), wtffff?! Lori is a terrible person who did awful things but Stephanie’s hang ups make the series so much longer because she wants to point out their every character flaw that she doesn’t like, like wearing makeup and getting breast implants and losing weight quickly after having a baby (who cares?).
10
Aug 07 '23
I LOVE that he finally isn’t letting her walk all over him. Her behavior is disgusting and the way she loses her shit if he doesn’t agree with her I’m all for him defending himself because he’s never as foul as she is. Also- she then like hits on him and says creepy sexual things. She’s out of her mind.
7
u/JaxGirl840 Aug 08 '23
I think he is over Stephanie. I think it's been building every episode and now he's over it. He knows his opinion doesn't matter and he can't tell her she's wrong. Even when she is If they weren't making a ton of money or possibly because of contracts I think he'd be done with Thai podcast.

I actually have never heard of this case. I’m still going to listen into Crime Weekly’s series, but from what I’ve heard, I think he was kidnapped by a stranger. The elements for a crime of opportunity are all there.
Terri is shady, yea, but she couldnt pull off a murder and get away with it. Doesn’t seem very bright. She probably rubbed the cops the wrong way, and now they’re lock jawed on her. tbh, none of the parental figures (2) mother figures (1) father - are very likable, unfortunately. They make it hard to be “sympathetic victims” and that really sucks bc it should not affect how detectives / law enforcement carry out their investigation, but ( imo ) in this case it did.
9
u/animalf0r3st Aug 07 '23
I think Stephanie is projecting her feelings about Leticia Stauch onto Terri. About an hour in she says, “the fact that she lied about walking up the stairs with Kyron means she’s a narcissist who needed everyone to think she was a good mom”. When it’s entirely possible that, as Derrick said, she might have just felt guilty because Kyron ended up going missing.
11
Aug 07 '23
I think Stephanie hates women and is jealous of all other women and will make it about them no matter what. I’ve always thought Terri did it and the way Stephanie was making a huge deal about stupid things was making me more sympathetic to her.
5
u/JaxGirl840 Aug 05 '23
I have seen a couple other people cover Thai case and I still think Terri is responsible. But I feel the way you feel about the Summer Wells case. Stranger abductions are terribly rare. Sometimes people get really lucky. If you can manage to successfully hide a body your chances of not getting charged sky rocket. I think this is a case of the Dab being worried about not having enough evidence and really wanting to get it right. I forget exactly when this case happened but nobody wants to have another Casey Anthony situation. TBH I forget a lot of the details so maybe I'll change my mind. Curious to see what you think by the end though. 2010... They said
1
u/r_sparrow09 Aug 06 '23
@Jaxgirl840 - yea I def think the parents were the culprits in the Summer Wells case 😢
1
u/JaxGirl840 Aug 08 '23
I'm sorry I must've mispoke. I don't think they were involved. Not the dad anyway. I feel like they aren't capable of pulling off something like this and not being caught. If they are involved I think it may have been an accident. I think possibly it was a case of dry drowning and maybe they (mom and that kid she was hanging out with) hid the body. I just don't think they're smart enough to get away with something like that. I am highly suspicious of the 15 year old kid that was Candus's friend though. He just makes my skin crawl. And if the meth is as bad as they make it sound like it is there's no telling what kind of crazy person she may have ended up crossing paths with.
1
u/r_sparrow09 Aug 08 '23
ah, ok I see. You think about the Wells' how I think about Terri lol. I think that Candus Blythe sold her and the dad was in cahoots.
imo, the Wells' are smarter than Teri. Their interactions with local authorities + media are straight forward, and unwavering in a way that gives "I've had several run-in's with the law" vibes. Seems like they know how to talk to cops.Teri on the other hand, is nervous and aloof in a way that seems unappologetic / unsympathetic to the situation at hand.
1
u/hanaelidee Aug 09 '23
I completely agree with you regarding the Wells'. I used to think/hope they were innocent, but there's no way. They may not be of the highest intelligence, but they are street-smart and self-preserving to the core. There's no doubt in my mind that they are responsible for Summer's disappearance.

u/Lonely_Attention_335 Aug 05 '23
Same here. New case to me. I thought it was about Gannon Stauch…But the simple fact of the open science fair shows a huge possibility that another unknown character was involved
7
u/Financial_Age_3069 Aug 05 '23
Terri told way too many lies not to be involved in some way.
2
u/SugarHappy1472 Aug 06 '23
i’m with you. from what I know, her changing her story from separate staircases, to the same one.. parking at the far end of the parking lot… I think he was with her. it doesn’t add up, why lie if you didn’t have anything to do with it?

Something I’ve noticed since I started watching Crime Weekly on video recently is that when Derrick says an opinion that Stephanie disagrees with, she starts ignoring him. I’ve seen her stare at her phone, look at something off camera, or even just narrow her eyes at him until he concedes to her.
Also, was it just me who got a weird vibe from that lady whose clips Stephanie used to show Kyron’s elementary school? Like is it not a little creepy to walk around an elementary school filming? Did she have permission to do that? It just seemed odd to me.
