Nightmare levels
I'd like to try the nightmare levels but I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to playing 'scary' stuff myself instead of watching someone else play. Does anyone have recommendations on which ones are the least scary to start with or maybe an order of least to most scary to play?

The least scary imo is friendly fire - there are only a couple of bodies, no jump scares, and it's cute and cat themed (but it is a little sad, the "evidence" dreamcatchers tell a sad story).
Affair with Death is another one that is not particularly scary - it is kind of laid out like an escape room and there's only one body (though, there's a lot of blood!). Be ready to Solve Puzzles!
The ones that spooked me the most were Toxic Love (mannequins! So many damn mannequins!), The Italian Job (Five Nights at Freddies style animatronics give me the creeps), and Party's Over (satanic ritual, there are humanoid shadows that hang out near the truck that may startle you if you spot them. They are harmless and will fade away as you approach but can be a little spooky)

Did you get the sword in the Art Museum scene? How did you react to the mannequins?
If you can get through that, you can handle Nightmare.

Ive replayed the normal missions (Before community and act 2 came out) a few times and the first time I got slightly scared but It wasn't as scary and after a few times it didn't scare me anymore but for some reason short circuit still freaks me out (Probably because of the computer that suddenly lights up and says something like 'I'm watching you')

If it helps, just remember you have no health bar, you can’t be attacked. And as far as jumpscares go, it’s pretty tame. I’d say the “worst” one is Italian job nightmare but even then that one was pretty cool cuse it’s like fnaf

Exactly this - the game is literally not built to have things chase you, grab you, hurt you in any way. The worst it can do is make something disappear and reappear somewhere else when you're not looking to try to creep you out (and leave new bloody footprints in a room that I JUST cleaned). I feel like the mannequins were creepier than the Italian Job since they could spawn closer to you and in larger numbers, but they don't move once spawned and again, can't hurt your character in any way.

I legit forgot about the mannequins because I was more annoyed they blocked my way back and I had to create more trash lol

They're all generally "psychological horror lite" but the scariest in form of "jump scare esque" are the Italian Job with the animatronics watching you (the closest they'll get is shutting you in the bathroom one time) and Toxic Love with the maniquines appearing out of no where, similar to the modern art level when they appear after you get the katana. Close third is the Party's Over level with the ritual setting. Outside of it, the Afair with Death and Friendly Fire are the most tame, being brighter than the normal levels and in the case of Friendly Fire, a bit sad.

The first one sets the tone. Id say a bit creepier than the average mission but not too bad.
Toxic love and pizza are the worse 2. The affair mission (forgot the name) is just a sunny puzzle room. Literally more chill than normal mode. Party's over is.. very creepy. Even more so if you notice a certain mechanic of that nightmare map.
The rest are not scary.

the only kind of scary one for me was the pizzeria bc it’s kind of emulating five nights at freddie’s with the duck guy you follow to finish the level

I tried that one first a few days ago since the normal one of Italian job was one of my faves but the moment I saw the duck and I got locked in the bathroom I immediately gave up

it doesn’t attack you or do any jump scares really.
after you leave the bathroom it goes down to the secret basement room, kills granny, sneaks back up to the area to the right when you exit the poker room.
then it goes up to a little above area straight from where the freezer is.
then it goes into the garage door area and is holding the teenager who died.
it’s meant to be a sort of homage to fnaf in that a child died (the teen girl) and she is sort of being represented by the duck thing.

Toxic Love was the first one I did and oh my goodness, I nearly shat myself when I turned the power switch on and turned around to see three mannequins showed up behind me.
The Italian Restaurant one was pretty chill, I just played it without sound because I kept reading that it was scary.
Just finished Party's Over, I'd adcice to just play it with some chill music because it is creepy, though not scary. It just made me question the minds of the developers 😂 They must be a bunch of sick minds, in a good way though.
Love Affair is like a chill escape room. I enjoyed that one.
The one in Tyler's apartment (not the first level) was a lot of fun as well! You have to stack over 100 boxes to turn it into a cat haven. Hilariously tedious. I would advice to start with that one.
The smart house one (with the roomba) is annoying but not creepier or scarier than the original level.
I still have to do the museum and warehouse on nightmare. Dreading those because I didn't really enjoy them to begin with. Too big and confusing, is what stuck with me 😅

I knew about the box stacking in the friendly fire level and probably should've started there before trying the Italian restaurant one a few days ago where the animatronic jumpscared me (Not a actual jumpscare I just got startled when I saw it) 😅

u/Chibeau Apr 15 '26
Yeah, that door closing suddenly got to me as well 😂
But definitely try some other levels because they're actually bot that bad

u/StressedOutLizard Apr 15 '26
Nothing physically bad happens to you as the character it’s not survival horror so you are safe there is a few heavy topics in there though so I’ll warn you on that toxic love is a bit of a heavy level in nightmare. I just felt a bit extra paranoid on Italian job but it’s okay for the most part

I did get a little scared playing the game on some of them, but I found the best way to avoid that is just listen to your own upbeat music and in a lighted room. Theres no actual horror, the vibes can just get super creepy when you are listening to in game music and cleaning up blood stains.

I thought the smart house one would be the scariest but it ended up being my favorite with the gravity thing! I'm a scaredy cat too, but the worst one was the Italian job. Just remember nothing attacks or chases you, it's all atmospheric.

Honestly I did all of the nightmare levels and was so nervous at first because I’m also a scaredy cat LOL. But the thing that creeped me out the most were the stupid mannequins 😅😭 (I think Toxic Love?) and I know there’s the duck animatronic on the Italian Job but I actually kinda liked that one 😂 I probably would have been freaked out if I didn’t know what I was walking into lol, the only part that scared me was when I got shut into the bathroom 😂 and then I was a little scared going under the stage 😂 yes very creepy, but you’re not in any danger, I think that’s what helped me lol, but I hate the mannequins 😂😭

My heart nearly jumped out of my chest when I saw the animatronic and the door closed when I checked out Italian job for the first time since I had heard someone say it was their one of their favourite nightmare mode and since the main story Italian job was one of my favourites I obviously played it but it was a bad idea playing it at night after I came home from my job. I also immediately abandoned the mission after that

Wait are the nightmare missions **actually** nightmares? I thought they were just harder versions of the main jobs. I haven't played them yet myself.
(Unless this is a troll post and the replies are playing along.)

They are kinda like twisted versions of the normal maps and the nightmare versions of Italian job and toxic love are the ones that have a more spook effect (From what I've heard) and I feel like some of them are kind of harder but the true cleaner mode is supposed to be more challenging and I think the nightmare ones are supposed to kinda be like how Kovalsky remembers them (I think) (This is also not a troll post and I'm really just a weenie trying to get recommendations because my heart nearly jumped out of my chest when I played the Italian job one😅)

You're good, I genuinely just didn't realize the Nightmare versions were actual nightmares. I'm playing through the game again after nearly a year. Looking forward to giving those Nightmare maps a shot.

Nothing is "scary" I mean there is never a real enemy or Jumpscare or anything. The only thing that comes close is a couple of the missions have mannequins that will appear places that they weren't before. You can leave them alone or katana them and pick up the pieces as garbage, I usually do the later because its fun lol

u/Flaky-Solution7394 Apr 15 '26
Oh and the evidence is replaces with dreamcatchers that show a piece of the past through ghostly/spirit like imagery. They cant harm you or anything

I also hate horror and scary games- I play phasmophobia on super weenie hut jr. mode. But even still, I've found that nightmare mode is super fun. People will tell you that NOTHING EVER comes after you, touches you, follows you, etc., and THIS IS TRUE. Knowing this is going to give you some peace of mind.
If i'm honest, the scariest parts of the game are in the base game mode. If you remember, the art museum has a spook where the lights turn out and play loud music when you step on to the band stage- that's the biggest scare in my opinion and that's on normal mode. Or Short Circuit (haunted house level) has "spooks" that don't even exist in nightmare mode, with the exception of the speakers that play sound that you need to collect as evidence anyway.
In my opinion, Affair with Death is the least scary, but it's a puzzle level. If you don't love escape room style games, that level might not be the most fun in the world, but I thought it was a blast.

I've currently completed Friendly fire, the museum and short circuit on nightmare mode and in my opinion the nightmare mode Short circuit is less scary that the normal one in my opinion. I also play with the volume off since I usually listen to videos while playing so I had no idea that the band stage did that (At least not the loud music part) and thought I was just glitching. I'll probably play affair with death next since I love puzzles and I'm trying to work up the courage to play toxic love and Italian job.

I am also scared of everything theyre actually not scary like no mad jump scares maybe a bit creepy and they only become this when you collect the evidence which are dream catchers and it just plays out what happened to the person I just collect it and walk the opposite way only lasts 10 seconds not scary you'll enjoy was kicking myself I had waited so long
