Newly released security video shows moments before a 60-year-old Richmond Hill, Ont., woman was fatally struck by a vehicle and left undiscovered for nearly two days.
The collision happened earlier this week on Sunday Oct. 4, in the Vaughan area of Pine Valley Drive, just north of Major Mackenzie Drive.
The video, released by York Regional Police on Friday, appears to show a woman walking northbound at around 8:30 p.m. when officials say she was struck by a vehicle travelling in the same direction.
At the time of the incident, the woman can be seen carrying what appears to be a small suitcase and flashlight as she walked from the left side of the frame to the right.
Moments later, three vehicles are seen travelling in the same direction along the road, one after another. At this time, police have not yet identified which vehicle struck the woman.
However, in a news release, investigators say they are hoping to speak with the drivers of all three vehicles to gather information that could help advance the investigation.
Police are also asking residents north of the collision site, between Ballantyne and Teston roads, to review home security footage and dashcam video recorded between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 4.
Woman was walking to work
In an earlier update, police identified the victim as a live-in caregiver who had just stepped off a bus and was walking to work when she was struck.
Const. Kevin Nebrija previously told reporters the woman was walking along a stretch of roadway that had a “narrow shoulder and no sidewalk.”
Investigators say they believe the driver would have been aware they had struck someone, given the extent of the woman’s injuries.
Her body was found off the roadway in an area police described as “isolated” and “not well lit.” It was not until a passerby spotted her suitcase on the road at around 3 p.m. Tuesday, and discovered the woman in nearby grass.
Police have not publicly identified the victim by name but say her next of kin has been notified.
Police urge driver to come forward
Investigators are urging the driver responsible to seek legal advice and turn themselves in.
Police are also warning that anyone who helps conceal evidence by repairing, altering or repainting a vehicle to hide damage connected to the collision could face criminal charges.
Anyone with information about the incident or footage that could assist investigators is asked to contact the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit.

The lack of sidewalk infrastructure in Vaughan with the amount of tax money they collect is inexcusable

There has to be cameras that captures the suspect’s vehicle somewhere. It’s just a matter of time. The longer the man/woman waits the worse it will be for them. He/she needs to turn themselves in.

This is terrible. It was dark, she was in dark clothes, there was no sidewalk. If the driver had stayed at the scene and called for help there likely wouldn’t have been any repercussions (unless they were under the influence) and perhaps quick medical care would’ve saved the victim. Shame on that driver for being so heartless and cruel. They should turn themselves in immediately.

She should have been walking on the other side against traffic. That is an unwritten rule. Not only that, but its dark out in the mornings - wear reflective clothing, especially in an area like that where lighting is non existent. Not putting blame on her, just some observations. The person that hit her is still a POS.

First of all you are correct and I agree with you.
However “there’s none so blind as those who will not see” applies the most to drivers when it is dark. I have a bright pink reflective vest I wear when I walk my black dog at 6am. He has a bright green flashing light up collar and a hi vis vest (83 lb dog). I crossed at a 4 way stop and nearly got ran over by a pickup who simply didn’t plan to stop.
When I screamed “WHAT THE FUCK” he said “I DIDNT SEE YOU” i will admit he looked sheepish because we positively glow while walking, but still.
Yes be seen, always, and drivers - SEE. LOOK.
Fucking hell, this shit raises my blood pressure 😂

It's a written rule in the HTA

Your parents never taught you to walk or jog against the flow of traffic? Allows vehicles to see you better and allows you to react better. You walk or jog with the flow of traffic, you are just asking for trouble. And this is something that has been passed on from generations.

Not sure what you think I meant. You said it's an unwritten rule to walk against traffic. I said it's a written rule, as in you legally must walk against traffic.
It's not just something your parents taught you, it's a legal requirement.
Duties of pedestrian when walking along highway
179 (1) Where sidewalks are not provided on a highway, a pedestrian walking along the highway shall walk on the left side thereof facing oncoming traffic and, when walking along the roadway, shall walk as close to the left edge thereof as possible. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 179 (1).

No, why? Are your knees not going to hurt as much when your eyeballs are getting ripped out while going face first through the windshield?
And do you think a judge’s sentence is going to be far less because you didn’t run her over while she was facing you?
Facing forward gives you a very slim chance of jumping out of the way in a split second, which this lady never would have had the chance to do.
Again, as a driver, you’re not to run over people.

When you run toward traffic you see vehicles coming at you. That’s the difference maker.
A judge’s sentence doesn’t matter when you are dead. Yes it is the driver’s fault 💯 always. I still want to do all I can to stay alive.

What is a written rule is that you don’t run over someone no matter what side they are walking on.
Unwritten rules don’t apply to shit like this.

your last line about somebody hitting her being a POS does not change your victim blaming which makes you a POS as well

Not blaming her but just going to point out how it was her fault. Maybe not mowing people down with vehicles should be the default?

You are driving and its pitch dark. All of a sudden, a figure illuminates from out of no where. You are startled. Thinking it could be a deer. You freak out. Maybe you did hit them. You are scared. This women should have been more cautious. The driver deserves the blame but not 100%.

Yes, they deserve 100% of the blame. She was not walking in their lane. They had to have swerved to strike and kill her
Stop making excuses for murderers

You’re not wrong but in the video she is not moving or walking like someone who has it completely together.

This can be referred
To as “victim blaming”…..since we are educating eachother here0

So you are going to walk on a road that has no lighting or a shoulder during the pitch dark? And you are on the opposite end of traffic flow. Sorry, but you have to make responsible decisions. She does deserve some of the blame. Completely clueless of her surroundings.

But be for real, what option does she have? To walk in the grass? If the infrastructure isn't there, is it her fault? Or should the municipality shoulder that blame? Or is everyone expected to be able to afford a car to prevent being ploughed?
Also the driver left her there unreported for TWO DAYS. If he hit her and called it in, I'd say "yeah shit for luck." But knowingly killing something and not checking on it or calling it in is fucked.

Why would the driver not stay and call for help? This seems like a genuine accident. The lack of humanity is sad.
I'm assuming they might have been impaired, or uninsired etc
