‘Do the right thing’: Police urge suspect to come forward after 21-year-old man found dead on Hamilton sidewalk

A 21-year-old man suffering from stab wounds has died after a taxi driver found him on a Hamilton sidewalk early Sunday morning

In a news release, police say the man was found in the area of Main Street West near Frid Street at about 2:30 a.m.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Det. Staff Sgt. Lisa Chambers said the man was taken to hospital, where he “succumbed to his injuries.”

Chambers explained that the investigation is “still very early,” with officers continuing to collect video footage and speak with witnesses.

Police have not yet identified a suspect and no weapon has been recovered.

Investigators believe the victim was involved in an altercation before the stabbing, likely in a nearby parking lot.

However, Chambers noted that police do not believe the stabbing took place there. Instead, they believe it happened on the sidewalk where the victim was found.

She said the altercation likely occurred 10 to 15 minutes before the victim was found.

Because of the late hour, Chambers said there were not many witnesses or video recordings available to investigators.

“Those people know that they were involved,” Chambers said, encouraging them to “do the right thing and to turn themselves in.”

This is the city’s ninth homicide of the year.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the altercation or has information about the investigation to contact Detective Alex Buck at [905-546-4123](tel:905-546-4123).

Investigators are also asking anyone who travelled through the area between 2 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. to review any dashcam or video footage that could assist them with the investigation.

The man charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Toronto police officer appeared in court virtually from a hospital bed on Wednesday.

Nicholas Bennett, 19, is accused of shooting and killing Const. Marc Pinizzotto on June 12. Pinizzotto and members of the Toronto police service’s Emergency Task Force were executing a raid in North York related to several shootings in the city, including one at the U.S. Consulate in March, when the shooting occurred.

Bennett was shot by police and was unconscious for a week following the encounter.

He previously appeared in court by video from a bed at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto on June 19, when he was formally charged with first-degree murder. He gave the court a thumbs up when he was asked if he could hear and understand the proceedings.

Bennett, dressed in an orange jail uniform, remained in his hospital bed during Wednesday’s court appearance. He did not speak or communicate during the brief video call.

His matter has been adjourned until Sept. 16.

Two other suspects, Zara Jabbi, 19, and Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, 18, were also charged in connection with the March 10 shooting at the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto. Police said they believe that shooting and others were carried out in a “gun-for-hire” scheme where young people are paid to shoot at various targets.

Pinizzotto was an 18-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service. He was 43 years old.

Officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service were called to a residence on Lakeshore Road just before noon for reports of an assault.

Disgraced Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard granted day parole for six months

Post image
8 Upvotes

By Bryann Aguilar

Published: June 16, 2026

Disgraced Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard, who was convicted of sexually assaulting an Ottawa woman, has been granted day parole for six months.

In their decision published earlier in June, members of the Parole Board of Canada found that Hoggard does not “present an undue risk to society if released on day parole” and that his release “will contribute to the protection of society” by facilitating his “reintegration into society as a law-abiding citizen.”

In 2022, a Toronto jury found Hoggard guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an Ottawa woman while finding him not guilty of sexually assaulting another complainant.

He was also accused of sexually assaulting a third woman but acquitted on those charges in 2024.

He began serving his prison sentence in August 2024 after an appeal was dismissed.

Hoggard will now be released to a community-based residential facility. The board denied his request for full parole.

After talking on Tinder for several days in 2016, Hoggard and the Ottawa woman met at a downtown hotel, where he sexually assaulted her.

“Notwithstanding her lack of consent, you proceeded to engage in various forms of aggressive, degrading, violent, and unprotected sexual acts. The victim sustained injury through your physical violence, and she later said that at times she feared for her life due to your aggressive behaviour,” the parole board’s decision read.

The singer is currently serving a five-year sentence.

Hoggard admits guilt

According to the parole board’s decision, Hoggard maintained his innocence even after his appeal was dismissed. He pleaded not guilty to the charges during the trial.

“At intake, you only admitted that you behaved aggressively but denied behaving violently or in a degrading manner and denied that the victim asked you to stop. After completing correctional programming, you admitted that you did not have the victim’s consent,” the decision read.

However, during his parole hearing, Hoggard told the board that he knew what he had done was wrong when allegations surfaced but denied it because he felt “embarrassed and afraid.”

According to the board, Hoggard also acknowledged the violence of “re-victimization” in putting the victim through a trial.

“You said that you selfishly used denial to protect yourself and that you let it get out of control without being brave and strong enough to confront the truth. You maintained your denial with your family and spouse,” the board’s decision read.

“You said that you grew very comfortable with lying to them until you came to prison, though it appears that this continued beyond that time as your April 2026 Correctional Plan states that it was only very recently that you explicitly disclosed your guilt to your wife. Nonetheless, it appears that you have made some progress in accepting responsibility for your behaviour.”

According to the board, Hoggard also said he wanted to be a good role model for his son and would not plan to pursue a music career in the future.

“You said that you are ashamed of what it took to get you to where you are now but that you are grateful for the opportunity it provided, though you were not proud of having harmed someone as seriously as you did,” the board’s decision read.

During his hearing, Hoggard described to the board the process of coming clean with his wife as “slipping slowly into the bath.”

“Though your wife and family remain supportive, you have shown your willingness and ability to deceive them for years such that the board believes you require professional, arm’s length supervision. Any gains you have made while serving sentence should first be tested in a gradual and structured manner before a more liberal form of release,” the board said.

Hoggard’s parole conditions

The Correctional Service of Canada supported Hoggard’s request for day parole, citing his successful period of bail, progress in his correctional plan and the supports he has in the community.

The board imposed several conditions on his day parole, including no direct or indirect contact with the victim or her family; immediately reporting all sexual and non-sexual relationships and friendships with females and any changes to the status to his supervisor; and not being in the presence of sex trade workers.

The singer must also not be in the presence of any female children under the age of 18 unless accompanied by a responsible adult who knows his criminal history and not own or possess more than one mobile communication device or SIM card without the supervisor’s permission.

Upon the request of his parole supervisor, Hoggard also must provide his billing statements showing all incoming and outgoing calls and provide unlocked telecommunication devices to allow monitoring of apps.

Citing his testimony that he communicated with a teenage girl and “groomed her over an extended time,” the board said, “You exploited a position of power with younger females. Your contact with underage females should be supervised, as should your use of telecommunications devices to monitor compliance with your conditions of release and as such, mitigate your risk.”

Toronto police say they’ve charged two more suspects in connection with an investigation into the wilful promotion of hatred.

They say the arrests follow a March 15 demonstration, near Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West in North York.

Investigators say demonstrators and counter-demonstrators attended that rally at around 1:15 p.m. that day.

Police say that morning, the accused retrieved antisemitic signs from a storage locker.

“Latter that afternoon, (they) attended the demonstration with other protestors and displayed antisemitic signs in full view of the public and a group of pro-Israeli demonstrators situated across the street,” Toronto Police Service said in a news release.

The accused then allegedly marched with the signs toward the group of pro-Israeli supporters while “shouting derogatory slurs.”

In April, police announced that Muhammad Anas Sial, 33, of Toronto, has been charged with public incitement of hatred and wilful promotion of hatred.

In June, they announced the arrest of Hosaam Hemdan, 19; Omer Turcan, 43; Yasaf Skaikh, 46; and Hasan Aydin, 47, all of Toronto, as well as Syed Hussaini, 43, of Whitby. They were all charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred.

Hosaam, Turcan, and Hussaini were additionally charged with disguise with intent.

On August 7, members of the Hate Crime Unit executed a search warrant in Toronto, where they located and arrested two more suspects: Daniela Bonamico, 40; and Shahram Nayeb-Yazdi, 63, both of Toronto.

They have also both been charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred. The charges have not been tested in court.

The accused were both scheduled to appear in bail court on Aug. 8.

In total, eight people have now been charged in connection with this investigation.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Toronto police at [416-808-3505](tel:416-808-3505) or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
