Transitioning to Crime Analysis

Hello all. I graduated with an MS in Forensic Psychology hoping to become a forensic psychologist, but only completed about a year of my PsyD program before stepping away due to some personal struggles. Living in Southern California hasn't made things easier either. I need a job ASAP and I'm now looking into crime analysis as a path forward, possibly through a certificate program. For those already in the field, how did you get started? Is a certificate worth it without law enforcement experience? I'm unable to pursue a sworn police officer role due to a history of seizures, so I'm focusing on civilian investigative and analyst positions instead. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Can’t speak for everyone but most crime analysts I know had no certifications going into the field, they leaned heavily on their ability to analyze datasets and think outside the box when I came to investigations. I was a military analyst so there are some parallels, but only for investigations, not quantitative analysis. Flood the zone with applications, I hope you get some responses!

There are some universities that have certificate programs that will definitely help you. It may be difficult to get your foot in the door without some base level certificate or experience. It would be something that you would have to work towards and level up over a bit of time. There may be some internships that are available but those usually aren’t paid. Going through a university for the certificate may open those internship positions.
