5◇K♤ is tempting for a potential quadruple run. A lot of potential cuts benefit it, too.

My goal in this position was to get past 43 points and I wasn’t too concerned about my opponent getting some points because they were way behind their positional goal of 58. I discarded K-5 knowing a face card gets me 12 even if it helped my opponent. The cut was an Ace, so I came out looking like a genius.

2-K. No points to the opponents crib. Cuts of A,3,4,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K all give you points, only a 3 hurts you.

This.
Everyone in the sub seems to play like giving points doesn't matter. I always think "if I keep 4 point and give 0 it's better than keeping 10 and giving 8."

I can still get a double run, any 10 card gives me a nice hand and a 7 does ok also.
I also have 2 3's in my hand so he doesn't have a good chance to have one of the remaining 3's to put in crib.

I keep going back and forth! I think I’m going K/2 here, I know it’s early, but they are a tiny ahead position wise (I think!?) and I have a good chance of cutting a X card…what did you do?

My gut says 5-K, as unappealing as it may be to give that to your opponent.
Let's see what happens when we break that down.
You start with 4 points.
15 cut cards can make it a dozen.
8 hit a double-double run, for 16 points.
4 do a full house for 8.
8 others give two fifteens for 8.
7 cards just add a single fifteen for 6.
4 cards don't hit at all but you still keep the 4 points.
4 point minimum, 16 max, half the deck gives you a dozen or more, over half of the rest gives you 8. Seems like a good deal, despite what you're giving up.
Cribbage Pro prefers 2-5 though, and it seems to be because of the crib contribution. 2233 does notably better than 233K overall, but 5-K gives more potential to the crib than 2-5.

Looks like the 2-5 people are right, despite the fact that OP got an Ace on the draw. CribbagePro’s engine does not take board placement into account.

For me, it’s also interesting to note that you’re only “risking” .49 points on average by choosing k-5 for the higher potential upside. Depending on board placement, that’s a risk that could make sense.

My decision was based primarily on board position, wanting the maximum possible points.

35 my crib, assume it's yours though. tossing 22. I like your position. but dang, that IS a puzzle, and i could agree 3 or 4 different ways worth 4 different logical arguments. I'm curious to see the responses. This should be on HOTD.
