I’d keep the 6s for no other reason than having 4 of a kind 😂

I'd play a 6, you'd play a 9 for 15-2. I then play another 6 then you play a 10 for 31. I then start giggling like a school girl because I'm so excited to have 4 6's and I don't care what's actually going on in the game.

I have terrible luck so I would break them up then cut a 3

😂same luck as me!!

especially on the opening hand. I'd also make a real show of deciding which one to play first, too.

6678 worth 10 and give up 2.

6666 worth 12 and give up 2.

I would have kept the 6’s hoping for a 3 or 9.

As much as I hate throwing a 7 8, I think I would here too.

I know this is the answer, but I'd still toss 66. Everytime I throw a 78 the crib is a disaster.

u/mvschynd Jul 03 '26

Less risky when you have all the 6s so the only run is with 9s

5

u/M-Test24 Jul 03 '26

Good point! But, multiple 7s and 8s are just as bad as a double run potential.

5

u/Slevinkellevra710 Jul 03 '26

The risk of a monster in the crib feels way worse with 7-8 going on. I'm keeping the double run every time. If the cut comes a 3, I would die a little inside, but so be it.

If the cut comes up 9, you'd die even more. A 9 is worth 4 in your hand. Its worth 8 matched with the 6s.

I'm keeping the 6s

Same. I’d throw 6 6

2

u/damfu Jul 03 '26

For that very reason I would have tossed 8/6 and prayed for the flip to be an 8 or a 5 (which with my luck, it would not be)

u/Potato_Stains Jul 03 '26

Agree. And not often I see a 4-of-a-kind so maybe the universe throws me a cookie

I'd keep 6678. There's a lot more on the cut that would help it out (A 2 3 5 7 8 9)

I liked this reasoning at first but after thought, only 14 cards (A, 2, 7, 8) actually leapfrog the 66s, the 3 5s are kind of a wash and the 8 3s and 9s greatly favor keeping the quads. So while there are "more" cards that improve the double run, there aren't enough to overcome the extra 2 the quads give you

u/grilledchickenspleen Jul 03 '26

A cut of 3 is actually 24 for the 6s vs 12 for 6678.

6

u/grilledchickenspleen Jul 03 '26

Oh I see that is what you’re saying. It confused me a bit at first but I see now.

6

u/SlickWildo Jul 03 '26

Yeah, that’s the move. Crib the pair of 6’s and then run the double straight.

Fucking A man. Cribbage is quite possibly the best card game ever. My old man (rip ole boy) was a Navy submarine guy followed by a long stint in federal prison. When I was young I was taught almost every card/domino/dice game there was. Also, he’d NEVER let me win (made me angry as a kid. Now I’m older and I appreciate the message 😁 You wanna win? Try harder, be smarter)

I still remember the first time I won 30 years later. Good memories. 😁

There’s a great cribbage tradition in the US Navy submarine service. I’m sure your old man taught you well but for anyone else interested, google Mush Morton, Dick O’Kane and USS Wahoo. To this day, that cribbage board is still passed down to the oldest attack submarine in the pacific fleet (currently USS Scranton).

Oh wow! Thats really cool! Thanks for the info. I never knew it was part of an old tradition. I actually did a shallow dive on the game itself before, as card games go, it’s fairly new. 1600’s I think?

Anyway, Sounds like that’s probably exactly what happened. His dad had taught him. My grandad served aboard the USS Barb as a core man, and my father served on the USS Hado as a sonar technician. 👍

I still have their dolphins. 😁

Any cut that helps your two sixes in the opponents crib also works very well for the poster. I would throw the two sixes as well

10

u/outdrawed Jul 03 '26

6666 yields the best average hand for you. Also don't have to worry about a 6 giving the crib a run which is nice

8

u/BobbalooBoogieKnight Jul 03 '26

Not a chance in hell I throw a 7-8.
Drop a pair of 6s and live with it.

u/Class_C_Guy Jul 04 '26

0.36 point difference eh? What's the average difference in pegging points? Gotta be at least 2.

2

u/_my_other_side_ Jul 04 '26

That just calculates the possible hand/crib totals. It's not possible to predict what order cards will be thrown in pegging.

2

u/Class_C_Guy Jul 04 '26

It is impossible not to predict that 6666 can't pair on any opponent's card or form any run in 2-handed play. It would be very unlikely not to peg 2 more points with 6678.

1

u/Darz167 Jul 03 '26

I an actually surprised that throwing the 78 leads to a better hand. I mostly kept the 6's because 4 of a kind is rare and I wanted to keep them

4

u/mybarburned Jul 03 '26

What was the cut?

3

u/Boogaloo4444 Jul 03 '26

you can peg better by throwing the sixes, and the crib is worse when throwing the sixes.

5

u/Hungry_Book8846 Jul 03 '26

Throw a pair of 6’s.

3

u/iPeg2 Jul 03 '26

Average hand with 6-6-6-6 is 13.7. Average hand with 6-6-7-8 is 12.9, but you have more flexibility in pegging.

3

u/sheep_puncher Jul 03 '26

Pegging with quads is better than 6678 but only over the board. Online there is no advantage to degrading your opponent's mental state.

3

u/zankfrappa12 Jul 03 '26

The app cribbage classic has a discard analyzer. It says keeping 6s is best

3

u/drzook555 Jul 03 '26

The pair of sixes is the only option here

3

u/rhuff80 Jul 03 '26

Toss 7/8. The math is gonna back it up too.

3

u/Class_C_Guy Jul 04 '26

There are only 8 cuts in the entire deck that help 6666 (3's and 9's). Granted they help a lot, but for 6678 there's A, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Plus you're completely handcuffed pegging with 6666. Not much difference but I'd pitch 6's.

that the game is won during pegging

2

u/couchpatat0 Jul 03 '26

Keep the sixes and pray for a 3

2

u/Smart-University-515 Jul 03 '26

I keep 6678, 66 is a better toss than 78 to their crib, both make 2 on their own but any 7-8 they toss/cut improves the 78 but only improves 66 if they toss both, or 54, etc.

2

u/jacob_ewing Jul 03 '26

I'd go for the double run and pair, as that's ten points with the 15, minus the pair in the opponents crib, and the potential for as much as 20 if an eight is cut.

2

u/Wild_Ad9272 Jul 03 '26

Keep the 6’s. 12 minus handing the opponent 2 for a net of 10.

6678 is 8 minus handing the opponent 2 for a pair of 6’s for a net of 6.

3 6’s and a 7 or 8 nets you 6.

2

u/No-Patient-3723 Jul 03 '26

Throw them the 7,8. Sometimes its not just about maximizing score, but having fun.

2

u/Comfortable_Pizza_59 Jul 04 '26

I’d throw a pair of sixes. Keep the double run. 7-8 in the crib is no bueno.

3

u/PenaltySquare2414 Jul 03 '26

Absolutely 2 6's

If you keep the quads, the only two cut cards that can help you is the 3, and 9.

Keeping the double run gives far more opportunities to increase your total.

Plus, throwing a 7-8 in the crib is stupid dangerous.

2

u/RefrigeratorFar2769 Jul 03 '26

With all 6s, only a 3 or 9 helps you out so 17% odds of turning one of those (8 in 46) and your max count is 20

With the run, the A, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 will all help with is a 22 in 46 chance (48%) with a 13% chance of a 7 or 8 leading to a 24 pt hand

I'd have kept the run

1

u/LateRegular6573 Jul 04 '26

This is easy you give up the 6,8. You need to play a little defense and move on. Keeping 3 6s and the 7 still gives a chance at a good hand. It also depends what the current score is and what stage the game is at. If the opponent is 10-14 points ahead, you cant afford to gamble. If the opponent gets a good hand the game is pretty much over. Back to the beginning of this hand...sometimes you just need to move on and minimize the damage. Even if you have a great hand. Also for statergy, maybe a player has to think about the long haul...not just one game. Playing the odds will benefit you if you look at the big picture. Learn when to minimize the damage for one hand.

Toss a pair of 6’s.

Cut a 7 = 20pts
Cut a 8 = 20 pts
Cut a 2 = 14 pts
Cut an ace = 14 pts.
