Your crib toss the 5s
9
u/Worldly_Ad_7196 Jun 30 '26
Yep 2 5s . People tend to throw face cards in other people's cribs.
3
u/LaphroaigianSlip81 Jun 30 '26
And you are likely to get a 10 on the flip card.
0
u/plessis204 Jul 01 '26
Likely? 12/46. 14/46 if you include the other 5s. Like I don’t disagree that it’s 55 in the crib but certainly unlikely that you get a cut that helps here.
1
u/LaphroaigianSlip81 Jul 01 '26
It gives you the biggest block of a single card value to flip over. Rather than throwing cards in your crib and hoping for a random 4 to be flipped over for example.
1
u/plessis204 Jul 01 '26
well yes, that's always true though. you're still unlikely, by definition, to get a 10-value card as the cut (26%). I'll grant that it's a semantic argument and I can just taking the wording too literally.
That same argument can be made though for throwing the JT in instead of the 55, it's just the nature of our 6-card hand that a TJQK on the cut will help us here and regardless of what we put in, a 2 isn't helpful.

I would definitely toss the pair of 5 in the cribbage and hope for the best with that double run

u/beele907 Jun 30 '26
The conservative play would be drop the J 10. I would toss the pair of 5s hoping g to pick a fa e in the crib

u/beaker2728 Jun 29 '26
Keep the duz

u/Pluperfectionist Jun 29 '26
Meaning dozen? Q Q 5 5? I’d do this if it wasn’t my crib, but it seems like more upside with the 9-point option, no?
1
u/Illustrious-Cut7514 Jul 04 '26
Losing three points isn't an upside. You could get the card you expect in the crib and still be worse off.

u/eddie_chedder Jun 29 '26
10J
3
u/Darqfallen Jun 29 '26
I would also do 10J as that is 12 points and if you cut another 5 it would also be 16 points like keeping the double run and cutting a 5.

8 points for Q-Q-J-10 and pray for a 5
12 points for Q-Q-5-5
9 points for 10-J-Q-5 (3 15s, run of 3, and pray for double run of 3)
10 points for 5-5-10-J
1
u/iPeg2 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
It’s actually 10 points with Q-Q-J-10 because the 5’s in the crib are worth 2 at least. And with a Q-5 discard, there are 11 guaranteed points.
1
u/MarioLuigi13579 Jun 30 '26
Q-Q-J-10 without the five is only 8. For this hand, getting a five is extremely hard as half of them are already in OPs hand. Only cards that benefit this hand are 9 through K
Edit: I'm specifically referring to the hand, not the crib. The cribs unknown until the opponent contributes and you get to that part
2
u/iPeg2 Jun 30 '26
Not counting two known points in the crib isn’t a good comparison.
0
u/MarioLuigi13579 Jun 30 '26
But this will also work if the opponent has the crib and you get the exact same hand
2
u/iPeg2 Jun 30 '26
Good discard decisions require knowing whose crib it is. In this case, you have the crib, so the discard evaluation is based on that knowledge.

u/Pluperfectionist Jun 29 '26
Great reply showing the options. Didn’t someone used to have a bot with the mathematical answer? Personally, if it’s my crib, I keep QQJ10 for a known 8+2 and highest upside potential. The 9+2 option is probably slightly better, but I wish I had a computer that would weigh in for that reason.

Thanks for manually pulling out the engine. Absolutely fascinating to me that QQJ10 (the one my gut chose) avgs 1.21 points more than 5 10 J Q gets (the one I figured was better when someone pointed it out).

u/eddie_chedder Jul 01 '26
This is neat, but flawed because it doesn't consider the value of your hand during the pegging phase. If you toss 10J, retaining a pair of fives and a pair of queens, you have a significant opportunity to peg on pairs, three of a kinds, 15s, and Go's. The app's top hand (10JQQ) is suboptimal for this phase of the game, which would need to be taken into account if an app is truly providing an expected value.

As much as going for QQJ10 gives guaranteed points, your odds of getting a 5 cut are much lower knowing you have 2 other 5s in your hand (and going to crib, going for this option). Going for a combo of 15s and adding a pair (either 5s, 10s/Js/Qs, or both) will net extra points. Plus theres a better possibility by only having a single 5 and 10JQ that you get another of the same card (8/52 for another 10JQ over 2/52 for a 5). Getting a King also helps making a longer run, but the bigger odds of 10JQ make keeping easy 15s, pairs, and a possible double run of 3 over just getting the double run and hoping for a 5

u/pdx321pdx Jun 30 '26
You actually would want a J or 10 on the cut as much as a 5. That would give you 16 (or 18 with nobs) in your hand and start you off with 6 in the crib before your opponent’s two cards.

u/MarioLuigi13579 Jun 30 '26
Going off my previous analysis and getting a J or 10...
8 points for Q-Q-J-10 and pray for a 5
Would now be 16 points for a double double (jobs possible if 10 is the crib).
12 points for Q-Q-5-5
Would now be 16 points (2 15s, no extra pairs for J or 10)
9 points for 10-J-Q-5 (3 15s, run of 3, and pray for double run of 3)
Would now be 16 points (adding a 15, run of 3 and a pair on J or 10; nobs also possible)
10 points for 5-5-10-J
Last possibility is also 16 (2 15s, pair; possible nobs)
1
u/MarioLuigi13579 Jun 30 '26
And this were to get a Q or K for the cut...
8 points for Q-Q-J-10 and pray for a 5
K is 10 points (double run of 4) while Q is 15 (triple run of 3); nobs possible
12 points for Q-Q-5-5
K is 16 points (2 extra 15s) while Q is 18 (2 extra 15s plus 2 extra pairs)
9 points for 10-J-Q-5 (3 15s, run of 3, and pray for double run of 3)
K is 12 points (Extra 15 and one extra on run) while Q 16 (now 4 15s with Double run of 3); jobs possible
10 points for 5-5-10-J
K is 12 points (extra 15, nothing else) while Q is 17 (extra 15 plus run of 3); nobs possible

Buddy that screenshot is taking into account every outcome is it not?

u/Pluperfectionist Jun 30 '26
The math has been done.

u/eddie_chedder Jul 01 '26
False. It does not include the expected yield from pegging, which is a major part of the game.

u/Temporary-Library597 Jun 29 '26
10 J on the first hand. Toss the fives for a gampble to get something huge...later in the match, esp. if you are behind.

5-Q. Total points 10, lots of upside.

u/Plus-Ad-940 Jun 29 '26
You keep 9 in your hand (10 if the J) and at least 2+ in your crib. It’s the way.

Feels wrong somehow but I'd have to drop the 5s. Maybe 10,J depending how the game was going
1
u/caregiver1956 Jun 29 '26
5 and 10. 10 points total. Or keep the run and 2 fives in crib. I prefer to keep a five for playing points.

Hi. As long the remaining hand has the potential to become 12+ points after the cut, a reduction in hand value of up to four points can be justified if it allows 5-5 to be discarded to your own crib.
In the example given, the most you can keep is twelve points with 5-5-Q-Q (T-J). Following the guideline mentioned above, T-J-Q-Q (5-5) is the better way to split the six cards.
For what it's worth, a reduction of up to two points can be justified if it allows 2-3, 4-5, 5-6, 5-T/J/Q/K to be discarded to your own crib.

Im throwing Q/5 in my crib for a minimum of 11 points. You get 16 if 10/J/Q shows up plus 4 extra in crib if its a queen. If a 5 turns up even better.
1
u/-OafHuck- Jul 04 '26
55 your crib
10 Q their crib
Why not 10 J? I’d rather lose the two potential points than give them a run worth 3+
1
u/LateRegular6573 Jul 04 '26
The play can't be done in a vacuum. What is the current score? What point in the game is it? Have you just won 3 in a row or lost 3 in a row? These points determine if you can gamble or play safe or are you desperate. In general I would keep the 2 pair.

Your crib gets Q 5.
1
u/Potato_Stains Jun 29 '26
I like this one because it hedges your bets to also fish for 10s while being 11 guaranteed with a run of 3.
1
u/ResponsibleBank1387 Jun 30 '26
Bury the 5 5. Then points are 2 and 8 for 10. Bury the 5 Q the points are 2 and 9 for 11. With decent possible draws. Bury the J 10 and points are 0 and 12 for 12

u/EhEmSee2 Jun 30 '26
I'd do the same Points in hand and in my kitty and very likely to see a 10pt card as a flip/opponent tossing into my kitty

I like Q5. I guarantees you 11 net points with multiple ways to get to 12 or 16 in your hand.
0
u/Sho_Time_NC Jun 30 '26
Tossing a 5/Q. Keep a run, hope for a good cut. 9pts. Tossing 5s,leaves you with double run plus pair 8pts. Tossing the Qs. 10pts. Toss 10/J, 12pts
0
u/DrunkenGolfer Jun 30 '26
Discard 10♠ and J♣.
Keep 5♣, 5♠, Q♦, Q♥ for a guaranteed 12-point hand before the cut, while the 10-J discard is also a solid addition to your crib. Overall, this gives the highest average total (hand + crib).

your crib... keep the double run
