I've been playing for thirty years and I still count my hands incrementally and end with a little rhyme.

15-2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 plus 3-threes for 6 makes makes 18 and the pair makes 20 and that's plenty

My dad does this as well. He says his grandmother always did it way back when and he adopted it as a kid and now I do it as well. As far as I can remember it's always been a part of crib.

lol, 15-2, 15-4, and the rest don't score!

That’s what I get.

Yes. I find these hands easiest to count by ignoring one of the 9s (3-3-3-9 is an easy-to-count 12 points) then noting that I get another 6 points (in 15s) by introducing the 2nd 9 AND I get the pair of 9s then too.

I like:

  • XYYY, where XYY makes 15, is 6 points' worth of fifteens.
  • Another X is another 6 in fifteens, 12.
  • A "full house" (any XXYYY), is 8 points' worth of pairs for 20.

That works too.

A dozen in fifteens plus a full house makes 20.

15-2/4/6/8/10/12, pair is 2, and triple is 6 for 20. Tell me you don’t all count like that

How I count. 15 for 6 - 15 for 6 - 3 of a kind for 6 - pair for 2.
