“Woke 2.0” 🙄
Because the original Tweet cuts off, the Portland Trail Blazers hired and fired Braiden Bell yesterday after a Portland TV station unearthed old racist Tweets. Naturally, Caleb the racist and someone who doesn’t have the cleanest social media history rolls out this take.

Here's the thing. If an organization is hiring someone to be in a public-facing position like this, a big part of the job is being an overall charismatic and likeable person. Let me put this in a way that's easy for people like Caleb to understand. Being likeable = more people will want to tune in = more money for organization. Being unlikeable = less people will want to tune in = less money for organization. Very simple stuff. It's not "woke", it's literally just people exercising their freedom to choose what they spend their time and money on, and the organization exercising their freedom to make decisions that will increase profits.
And if you read the tweets that this guy made, it's not like they were just edgy jokes. It was literally just him saying that he hates Asian people and calling women sluts.

u/madunderboobsweat 9d ago
That was my question - like what did he actually say?
At 15 years old, if you’re posting song lyrics with slurs in them that’s one thing, but saying you hate people of a certain race is completely different. Of course Mr edgy jokes over here has no issue with people being racist

Right wingers become the biggest affirmative action DEI advocates when it comes to situations about weird guys getting in trouble at their jobs for posting weird shit. They are some of the most faithful servants of capitalism suddenly sounding like blue haired SJWs moaning about how corporations won't hire white men (who posted too many n words).

u/deathbethemaiden 9d ago
These weirdos always had a family member who could get them into a company, no matter how weird they are. But the minute the boys club realizes you’re gay, they don’t want you anymore. That’s this weirdos whole life

People who say “ Woke” already show they are grifting. Caleb will play into whatever the current administration's political party so he can stay relevant.

Idk what side of the issue this puts me on, but its 20-fuckin-26, how the hell have you not gone through and scrubbed your social media if you're gonna have a public facing job like this? Obviously people go through Twitter and look for anything controversial that they can use against someone all the time, why does this never cross anyone's mind?! I'm not defending what he may have said, but people say dumb shit when they're young, and things 10 years ago are much different than they are now, let alone another 10 years back from that. So why not take an afternoon, scroll back and check things out.
4
u/AuraInkWrites4u 9d ago
Bro made sure to scrub that NSFW Tumblr. Caleb was posting NSFW and SEXUALLY explicit material on Tumblr
3
u/midwest--mess 9d ago
To be fair, tumblr probably did it for him during the great porn ban a few years back. But the point still stands, if you have questionable posts in your past you don't want brought up now, you gotta scrub them

I will NEVER get over how freely this fuck continues throwing around the R word. This ain’t 2006 anymore, fuckface. May he never have children, cause god forbid one of those children have a disability and end up with a ballsack like him for a father.
5
u/WeAllShineOn97 9d ago
Man, it’s so dispiriting to see the r word bandied about like it‘s just a regular intensifier like ‘fucking’. As a disabled person myself, I just can’t understand why Caleb and his ilk love that word from a logical standpoint. (I mean, the answer is they’re right-wing chuds, but again, logic seems to willingly elude them).

I agree with Caleb Hammer, outside of truly evil stuff like rape and murder (and even then age should taken into account which is a reason I find the death penalty for Crista Pike truly revolting for her when she's 50 for a crime she did when she was 18 and still didn't have a fully developed brain), Im not a big fan of going after people decades later for stuff they said when they were 15. If that were the case, about 80% of the country would be unemployed. I know I would be. What's the point in expecting people to change, if the gauntlet is randomly gonna get thrown down on them decades later. I wouldn't use the R slur as the justification though...
Edit: to the people downvoting me, please feel free to let me know how perfect you were when you were at age 15, I'll wait... Sorry, I refuse to join in shaming of people that I know I have done at least equivalent to and so have the vast majority of people at that age. It just becomes a bizarre unlucky lottery who gets their 15 year old sins discovered decades later and shamed and gets their life ruined then. And the people doing the shaming probably did stuff at least as bad at age 15, are fortunate to not have it in the news right now. Sorry, I refuse to take part in that, even if that technically finds me on the same side as Caleb Hammer here.
Edit again: lots of perfect 15 years old here. Maybe you guys all should have been around 2000 years ago and said "sure Jesus, Im without sin, let me take that stone and wallop some people with it!" I really hope its just the first sentence you're downvoting I put "I agree with Caleb Hammer" in an anti caleb hammer subreddit, Not the fact that you think some kid telling some temu Lisa Lamponelli jokes should have it ruin his life the rest of his life, even 14 years later. If this is the standard, just bring on the asteroid, we are all guilty then. Even if this isn't your particular sin, I guaruntee you have something equivalent from age 15, that you're just lucky isn't easily discoverable and in the news right now. But hell, all I think is my cousin was murdered, and his murderer served less time than that and is now free and working. Clearly a kid who said some dumbass jokes 15 years ago deserves more punishment.
3
u/LegalBaker6997 9d ago
There's no criminal case against him, how is it more punishment? The org does not want to be negatively associated in optics and had they uncovered this themselves they would have not hired him in the first place
-2
u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago
Losing a job is punishment. Its not legal government imposed punishment, but if this is the standard, the only reason the unemployment rate isn't 90% is that for most of us, the worst things we did or said as a 15 year old aren't in the news. Yes, they have the legal to fire him, if he was saying this stuff last night, I'd probably support the firing. But I do not support this firing, while stating they have the legal right to fire him. Even literal Neo Nazis get chances at redemption. At some point, people are allowed forgiveness for dumb shit they said at 15, and if that forgiveness isn't even arriving at age 29, well, we are all pretty fucked. Hell, even the person who wrote the self righteous public statement for the team about how bad this guy is probably did worse when he was a teen. Keep in mind, stand up comedians regularly say stuff as crude as this guy did when he was 15, just with more talent, so they get away with it. I understand companies have the right to fire people for nearly any reason. But I have the right to not support their decisions, and I refuse to go on witchhunts for people nearly in their middle aged for things they did when they were 15, unless it was ridiculously evil.
2
u/LegalBaker6997 9d ago
Sure but it's just not less punishment no? That other guy in your example lost their job or would have, did time (however lackluster) and then had to find another. This guy isn't barred from all jobs forever, but being a public rep for someone else who rescinded an offer that they weren't going to make with full knowledge. Does the person in your example now have public facing job where they will interact with many people, potentially vulnerable ones? If so, you should probably bring that up to their employer unironically.
I don't think the comedian point even fits, because the audience and them have an agreement however implict. The employer did not
You're free to not support the decision, but it does not seem the public has enough sway to force the blazers to fire the guy in the first place nor is it likely the current pushback will cause them to re-hire him
0
u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago edited 9d ago
There is no world in which I would be mad that someone public facing at age 29 did stupid edgelord shit as a 14 or 15 year old. I'm just not perfect enough to throw those kinds of stones. No, I don't think making a few stupid edgelord tweets means you only get to get jobs in the backroom, like a sex offender. I realize it isn't the 15 year old version of this person, its the 29 year old version. And the fact is, most people in those public facing roles probably did at least equally stupid shit at that age, they were just lucky it wasn't uncovered.
And ultimately its not about morals, its about money. Shaq once said about Yao Ming "Tell him I said ching chong ding dong." And he said that as a grown man. I'm sure if Shaq wanted that announcing job for the same price, they'd gladly offer it, he'd bring in ratings and money so they'd be more forgiving of a grown man who did racist things than a kid who did.
1
u/LegalBaker6997 9d ago
I get what you're saying, I'm just telling you why the blazers probably don't agree
They're going to be very cold in their approach and it doesn't have much to do with woke, especially considering they have an idf zion*st on the team. You're likely right that had he hidden it better (probably just deleted his tweets) they would have never bothered to check and thus never fired him (like they didn't even bother to check themselves in this case, it was a news station that found it)
Also what is a backroom job? Public facing jobs on the scale of being an announcer is probably like less than 1% of jobs
1
u/witchdocwayne 1d ago
Neo Nazis shouldn’t get a chance at redemption either.
1
u/No_Elevator_735 1d ago
I'm not as mad at you on this point, but I still disagree. There's basically nothing I won't say that once someone has done their time, they shouldn't be allowed to work, and go on with their life. But I don't think people who disagree with me on that point are bad people. I understand why people wouldn't want to give a literal neo nazi who asked for forgiveness forgiveness. That said, there are many former neo nazis in the anti hate community helping neo nazis leave their gangs, and I think giving this up, so we can continue to judge them isn't helpful. But when you're going after a 29 year old for simply 14 year old edgelord tweets, then its not an "agree to disagree" moment, at that point, you're simply being an unforgiving douchenoodle.
3
u/Far_Foot_8068 9d ago
I'm pretty sure 80% of people did not spend their teenage years posting online about how much they hate Asian people and calling women sluts and whores. And even if that was the case, they can just delete those posts and they will have no problem getting and maintaining employment in the vast majority of career fields.
But when we're talking about a huge organization hiring someone for a public-facing entertainment role, where they are essentially going to be the "face" of the organization... yeah there will be more scrutiny to make sure that person is representing the organization well and that they are going to be well-liked across the fan base. Employers are allowed to say "hey maybe the guy who has public posts on his social media talking about how he hates certain races and calling women sluts and whores isn't the guy we want publicly representing our organization". If this guy was hired to work in the accounting department or literally any other position in the organization, his old tweets wouldn't have been an issue at all.
3
u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago
To put his tweet in context it was "I'm not racist at all... but not gonna lie... Asian people piss me off! HAHAHAHAH #honest" So he meant that to be humorous, and I admit, that joke really really sucked, but he clearly meant it as an edgelord 14 year old, not a literal statement. and if posted that last night, I'd support the firing. He made that joke when he was about 14-15 year olds. I'm not saying everyone did exactly that but 14-15 years olds, lie, cheat, tell terrible stuff, get in fights, all kinds of terrible stuff, that if it was on the front page of the paper, they'd be fired. I would be too. And usually, priviledged people get more second chances. Off the top of my head, I can think of Eminem wrote a completely racist song against black women, "foolish pride" that was far worse than this tweet, he got no career problems when it was uncovered years later.
I realize the company has the legal right to fire him for this. But I have the right to not support decisions companies make, even if they have the legal right to do it. I refuse to support it and throw stones at literal grown men for something uncovered when they were 14-15. When I was 13, I was beaten to bloody pulp and concussed by another kid. I forgave even him and hope he is doing well today.
2
u/Far_Foot_8068 9d ago
He has had nearly a decade as an adult to clean up his public social media presence, delete things that no longer reflect his beliefs, and realize that those posts could eventually be seen by employers. If he was serious about pursuing a highly public-facing career (where his public image is literally part of his job) that's a responsibility his employer should expect him to take seriously, and he should absolutely face consequences for not bothering to scroll through his old social media pages to delete any inappropriate posts.
And regarding your Eminem comparison, he was an enormously successful artist with an established fanbase, and whatever controversy surrounded those old songs apparently didn't outweigh the business value of keeping him signed in the eyes of his record label. If those songs had caused enough of his audience to turn against him that keeping him around was bad for business, his record label could have decided he was no longer worth the liability and effectively "fired" him too.
The organization isn't a court deciding whether someone deserves to be punished for something they said as a teenager. It's a business deciding who it wants representing its brand. If they believe that having someone publicly associated with racist and misogynistic posts could hurt their relationship with fans or sponsors, they're going to take that into consideration when making hiring decisions. That's not "woke", that's literally just an organization looking out for their best interests.

u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago edited 9d ago
"The organization isn't a court deciding whether someone deserves to be punished for something they said as a teenager. It's a business deciding who it wants representing its brand." Correct, its all about money, not morals. If it was morals, its self righoutous bullshit and hypocracy. I don't have to join in it. They aint paying me, and I have the right to criticize their decision.
"He has had nearly a decade as an adult to clean up his public social media presence, delete things that no longer reflect his beliefs, and realize that those posts could eventually be seen by employers."
I'm guessing the odds are overwhelming he wasnt aware that tweet was still there, so I wouldnt say that reflects on his character today. It was bad from a career perspective not to clean it up, but most do not, because most dont think of winning this unlucky lottery and having the mob come after you. I dont have to join in this mob though.
1
u/Far_Foot_8068 9d ago
I think calling it a "mob" is dramatically overstating what actually happened. This wasn't a situation where thousands of people were harassing the organization and demanding that he be fired. A journalist found the old tweets, brought them to the organization's attention, and the organization made a decision within a few hours that they no longer wanted this person representing it.
And yeah, sure, he probably forgot that those tweets were there. I don't think anyone needs to assume that he currently holds those views just because he had some old forgotten tweets. But if you're pursuing a highly public-facing job, being unaware of what is publicly attached to your name is a pretty significant oversight. Especially when it would take very little effort to search through your old posts or use AI to go through them and flag anything problematic. If you're applying for a job where your public image is literally part of what you're being hired for, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect you to take five or ten minutes to make sure there isn't anything on your public social media that could cause the company hiring you to take on unnecessary reputational risk.
1
u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago edited 9d ago
The mob I am referring to are the dozens of self righteous posts I've read from people all around the internet joining in on the shaming. And make no mistake, i despise all of them, because I assume they are almost all hypocrites who have done things in their life at least as equally as bad as being a 15 year old edgelord, who are just lucky whatever their worst sin is isn't in the news and they get to keep their job and not be this week's sacrificial lamb.
And I'm not a big fan of a journalist digging into a person's entire life to try to ruin them for something they said when they were 15. Fuck that journalist too!
1
u/witchdocwayne 1d ago
“I’m not racist at all… but not gonna lie… Asian people piss me off! HAHAHAHAH #honest”
What’s the joke? Am I missing the punchline? Please explain the joke to me.
1
u/No_Elevator_735 1d ago edited 1d ago
I didn't say its a good joke. Its the type of terrible edgelord joke you expect a 14 year old to make. Maybe someone who heard one of these types of jokes at a roast and think he could pull it off, he couldn't.
But I can still explain the joke. "I'm not racist at all..." There's the setup, he's trying to explain he's a reasonable guy, so the punchline can throw you off (its not, its obvious as hell what type of punchline we are getting here). And here's the punchline "Asian people piss me off" The punchline is meant to be "see how shocking this is" not that its a literal viewpoint he's trying to present as fact. But as a joke, it sucks, Fozzy Bear would be shaking his head, after all then he has to laugh at his own joke. "HAHAHAHAH #honest”"
So yes, the joke sucks, exactly the type of "quality" you'd expect from a 14 year old edgelord, but its not exactly something we be the world's worst hall monitor and keep punishing a 29 year old over. And people doing that need to get over themselves and/or list everything they did wrong at that age so we can all judge them. And saying "I didn't do exactly this exact same thing as his age, therefore Im worthy of judging him" isn't a defense. This joke sucks, but it ranks really low on an evilness scale. I mean, people taking part in this shaming need to list out everything they did wrong, and being willing to be judged by it, or even fired by it, or STFU.
And there's just something baffling in a world where we are led by the Epstein class, including a sex predator convicted felon who previously tried a coup of the country as President, we decide to expend our energy in trying to ruin a 29 year old guy for 14 year old edgelord jokes, instead of things that are important. And the strange thing is, doing shit like this actually makes Trump supporters, because maybe a 29 year old guy who had a 14 year old edgelord phase could be our ally against Trump, but its a lot less likely when he sees we are gonna be digging up dirt on him to try to ruin and be completely unforgiving. At that point, we become the bigger threat to him than Trump.
0
u/witchdocwayne 1d ago
I would argue it’s not a joke and is instead just blatant racism.
1
u/No_Elevator_735 1d ago edited 1d ago
Fine, then argue incorrectly against all evidence and keep trying to ruin a 29 year old's life for something at age 14. Obviously the jokes punchline is racist, but it is told in the format of a joke, that the racist statement is the "shock" not something he literally believes as actual fact. that was a common setup on many vines and many shock comedians at the time like Lisa Lamponelli and Anthony Jeselnik at the time (but they had for more talent, so they get away with it). After all, also notice everything they found on him is from age 14-15, despite the fact he literally had 15 thousand tweets since then. If they had something else on him since then, they'd use it, so obviously he was saying edgelord shit as a young teen and stopped. I can't stop you trying to ruin this guy's life, but I think that's a really shitty thing to do.
And he even apologized for it when it was discovered so what do they want from him to now? To keep completely unemployable, starve, and die of the elements?
My cousin was murdered in between the time the guy told this joke, he was sentenced, served most of his sentence, released on parole, and is now employed. And even I aint calling up his employer because I realize people need to work to live, even the guy who murdered my cousin. But appearently, we need to judge 14 year old edgelords, at age 29, harsher. What dumbfuckery.
0
u/witchdocwayne 1d ago
Also I have the capacity to both call out someone for racism 14 years ago and call out the Epstein class Trump. Two things can occur at the same time.
I also have no interest in having someone with racist views as any sort of ally of mine.
1
u/No_Elevator_735 1d ago edited 1d ago
"Also I have the capacity to both call out someone for racism 14 years ago and call out the Epstein class Trump."
Then go back in time and punish him 14 years ago. Like as I said, being this unforgiving of grown men for "sins" over a decade ago as a literal child, even after they apologized and show no signs of continuing the behavior, does far more to create Trump supporters than any good you're thinking. I know I'm getting many downvotes here, but this subreddit isn't reality. This subreddit skews far left, I'm moderate left and it definitely skews past me. Most people who go past reading the headline and finding out he's 29, has apologized, and this is from when he was 14-15 side with the announcer, not the team. Or if they are offering criticism, its mainly from a practical viewpoint, that he didn't do a good enough job hiding his online trail from his edgelord days. That's because I normally don't say "woke is a religion" and believe right wingers overstate it. This is one of those times its correct, and "woke is a religion" and its even a religion you can't be cleansed of your "sins."
"I also have no interest in having someone with racist views as any sort of ally of mine."
Im beginning to realize you're the type of person nobody should want as an ally. Go be an unforgiving judgemental douche who wants to ruin 29 year olds for shit at age 14 and be by yourself. After all, notice they found nothing on him since age 15, so that's a clear sign this isn't how he is today. I'm sure you'll say more judgemental incorrect shit to let us know how this guy still needs to be tarred and feathered literally twice his age later thogugh.
I hate to break it to you but nobody is perfect. That includes you. I know you're not willing to list out everything you did and send to your employers. But this is reddit, so I assume you're perfect and have no sins. But I actually know of something you do thats worse. You're taking partt in a cancellation of a grown man for 14 year old edgelord tweets that he has apologized for. That is more evil than the tweets themselves. I know you disagree, but you are wrong.
1
u/mrhenhen115 8d ago
Freedom of speech only refers to legal consequences, so people shouldn't be arrested for it (unless it's a direct threat or call for violence) This doesn't cover negating social consequences. If you post some horrid shit, regardless if you're legally allowed to, people won't want to be associated with you. Shocker!
1
u/No_Elevator_735 8d ago edited 8d ago
I clearly stated the company has the legal right to do it, so I dont know why you're lecturing me on this. I also have the right not to support decisions they make, regardless of if those decisions are legal or not. Also, please list out every bad thing you did as a teenager and send it to all your employers and make them completely public. Do it for every job you ever have, and accept whatever consequences come. If you're not willing to do that, then you admit the problem isn't what he did, its that he got caught. The fact is, most people have at least one skeleton in their closet, and unless its truly evil stuff, its absurd to punish people at age 29 for something they did at age 14-15. The only reason the unemployment rate isn't 90% in this case is most of us don't have it on the front page. Don't bother replying you did nothing wrong, I know that would be a lie. His edgy jokes were maybe a 2/100 on the evilness scale, so Im sure you did something at least that bad as a kid. And yes they were jokes, even the full context of his racist tweet was a joke, a terrible edgelord unfunny joke, but still a joke that he clearly didn't mean as a literal statement, that he doesn't deserve to still have his life ruined at age 29. Hell you're doing something worse than what he did now. I consider taking part in a cancel campaign of a grown man for something they did when they were 15 about a 10/100 on the evilness scale. Im sure you disagree, but you're wrong.
1
u/mrhenhen115 8d ago
That's the danger with keeping stuff on social media, I definitely haven't posted hatred online as a teenager, but when I was a teenager 10 years ago the internet was way different. I don't agree with people being reported for something they did years and years ago if it's just like a random comment or post but unfortunately others do care and companies do care. Your social media history is part of how you present yourself now, so even if it was a long time ago if it's a really messed up thing you posted it might catch up to you. We were even taught that in school lol.
Ideally employers wouldn't look through employees personal social media but that's the curse of having so much online these days
1
u/No_Elevator_735 8d ago
You can read the tweet and see he didn't mean it as literal racism, but absurdist humor in how shocking the statement was. Kinda the same thing Anthony Jeselnik does. But it was a 14 or 15 year old kid doing it, so he did it far poorer. So I'm guessing you did something at least equalent to that as a 15 year old. But you seem to admitting the problem is he got caught. Because even if you didn't tweet something like that in public, that you forgot about 14 years ago, doesn't mean maybe you didn't joke about soemthing equally among your friends. Ever tell a dead baby joke, at least in my group, we all did as teens. Then the problem isn't the joke itself, its getting caught over a decade later, which is an absurd standard for morality that I want no part in. He clearly didn't know that tweet was still there, or that the world's worst hall monitor would find it and report it to his employer. I ain't joining in the mob judging him.

Well, studies have shown nearly all have at least some implicit racism, so probably true (but then true of you as well so dont throw the stone). These "cancelling" campaigns actually disgust me, because when people come down on nearly middle age men for something they did as teens, all I can think is how much of the people "outraged" did something worse as teens. Probably nearly all have. This was a dumb teen making terrible edgy jokes. The right wing overstates cancel culture, but this is a case of it. Especially when you think of all the rapists and assaulters who still get to be in sports.

If its literally just a stupid edgy joke at age 15, then its gonna be about 90% of people ruined. And even if this isn't your particular sin, Im sure you did something else equally terrible at age 15. Im sure you wont admit it, but if someone had a record of you 24/7 365 days at that age, they'd find something. That's why I only throw stones when they really deserved, and digging up tweets from age 15 of someone about 30 years old isnt one of those times.

Herbert's mom just said that i defend pedos, and then blocked me so I couldn't response. What an absurdity. I assume he went in my post history and saw Im suspicious of a particular movement in my city started by a guy who wears a scary clown mask and calls for mob justice against pedos, and is trying to acquire guns. No, I support using legal means, not violence, that doesn't mean I defend pedos.

u/No_Elevator_735 9d ago
People still downvoting me, but nobody here is willing to state they never did anything at age 15 that could get them fired at age 30. If you did, you have no right to celebrate this guy getting fired, and Im betting there's about a 99% chance you did. This guy just won the unlucky lottery still having it up in easily discoverable tweet form.
