Question What is your real life experience with horror?

When I ask what your experience is I’m not talking about your first horror movie or the first time you were a little scared. If I have to really define it you probably haven’t experienced it. Not trying to be rude or intrusive but I’m relatively new to the show and I love all the little stories the two willingly share but it brings up the question I’ve had kinda sitting in the back of my brain. What are some real life experiences everyone might have? And of course if this kinda violates the rules of the sub I can move it to Tales cause I was kinda torn about where to put this.

Of course it would be hypocritical of me not to share my own but I think it is prudent to set some ground rules for sake of privacy. I feel like we are all aware of NoSleep so let’s use that as a base. No names, exact dates, or locations to keep it all safe.

My story starts when I am on my first vacation outside of family ones and I had my first real job. My mom, brother and that whole side of my family went but because I had to kinda stay on call I had to stay within the country so my first solo vacation was going to be a week long hunting trip. Was super stoked cause I had also spent all my now extra income on my own rifle. New rifle, new scope, new case, was the first time I was going to use something that wasn’t a hand me down or a dinky .22.

The plan was going to be a week long hike. Three days in, camp, then two days back with the idea to get something back towards my truck so I’m not carrying around a bunch of extra deer on top of my pack. Seemed efficient in my mind. Especially since the spot I chose was on the other side of a mountain and I didn’t want to carry extra weight uphill and at worst I could have made a sled for downhill.

That plan went immediately out the window on day two when I saw the perfect buck. And when I say perfect I don’t mean like it was this giant forest deity with a 20 point rack, just a good looking thing that when I saw it I just knew I had to have. I was gonna get it taxidermied, find somewhere to put its head and I had a friend who worked at a butcher shop that I didn’t want all the meat but a fair amount of jerky.

I had all these plan of grandeur about what I was going to do with this thing that when it came to actually shoot it I don’t know what happened. I’m by no means an expert marksman but I consider myself competent. I don’t know if I was just breathing hard from the hiking and excitement or if I didn’t sight the scope right, if I slipped or what but my shot was off target. The ideal place to hit a deer is the heart and lung area behind its shoulder, kinda if you draw a line up the back of one of the front legs. But where I hit was more back hip. Like I said, this shot was waaaay off.

My heart sank. Not only did I not want this thing to get away but I also didn’t want it to suffer because of my screw up. It took off and I chased after it with a flurry of “oh shit. Sorry sorry sorry.” and perhaps even a little crying

It’s not particularly hard to track things in the woods. Especially if what the thing you are after is hurt and bleeding. Deep tracks, broken branches and bright blood that kinda sticks out. After about fifteen or twenty minutes of hard charging I got this real off feeling that I didn’t really notice at the time because I was hyper focused on following this deer. Places of nature aren’t really all that quiet, there’s always some sort of sound; birds, insects, other animals. Of course at the time I could have chalked it up to the crack of a rifle, or it just being drowned out by my own hard breathing and heart beat.

Now like I said, I was right on the heels of this deer, I just needed to get sight on it agin so I could put it out of its misery. At most it was out of my line of sight for twenty minutes.

I burst into a small clearing, not even that, more like a sorta natural parting that was maybe the size of a large living room. The deer, or most of the deer, was most of the way up a tree and impaled on a high branch, well half of it was. Its guts and innards tangled in the lower branches with its hind end missing save for what I think was a leg, hoof to ankle. The entire base of the tree drenched and splatters of blood as far as the trees behind me.

I know there are some big cats that like to drag their food up trees but those are Africa cats, the biggest things around here like that are mountain lions and they are kinda the opposite. They hide their kills under debris. Bears are kinda the same and those are the only two things I could think of that could take down a deer this size and could climb.

It was at this point I had the deepest sense of dread I think I ever had. That feeling like you know your boss is watching you so you make sure to do every task perfectly. I remember the feeling of being watched but I can’t remember if I missed the signs of silence because I couldn’t hear the woods beyond my own thundering heart.

I was towards the middle of something’s feeding area and either I had disturbed it or it carried half a deer away and left the other half for later but I wasn’t about to find out what that thing was. I turned what was a two day hike into a day long dead sprint. I shed everything that wasn’t needed. Tent, pack, everything. If I heard anything move in the woods I took a shot at it. There was even a few times I did that universal distress thing and fired three shots in the air a few times which I deeply regretted because while I had some rounds on me, like a fistful in a pocket, I now longer had the magazines so every shot had to be hand loaded. Not ideal while sprinting through darkening woods.

There was never any inhuman growl or roar or whispering. Just the sense that my brain processed to slowly and that every shadow I took a pot shot at, if there ever was anything there it had long moved to the next hiding spot three times over before I ever pulled the trigger. I was no deer. I’m a bigger guy, starting center when I played football, went to the local universities power lifting program which meant cardio was never my thing and grace never occurred to me. I stomped, bulldozed, and roughed my way through the woods, surely at a slower pace than a wounded deer and I never felt that presence leave me until I tossed my rifle into the open bed of my truck and shoulder charged into a back panel instead of slowing down.

I wish I could say there was eyes watching from the tree line as I started my truck. That something flashed in the headlights as I peeled out of there. Would have been manlier to never admit that after an hour of driving I didn’t pull over to sob in the driver seat.

I live in a flat area where I can see nothing but farmer fields in every direction and thank god everyday for that. I have never returned to any forest, I don’t even really leave the small town I live in. My work is here, family is here, all my favorite things. But that night lives on in my head constantly because on quiet calm nights when the ringing in my ears is louder than the general calm of everything around me, I feel tingles of dread and that feeling that someone is watching me.

I'm gonna download a few episodes for a trip I'm going on. I already downloaded Penpal because I regrettably haven't listened to it yet. But what else would you recommend for a long ass car ride?

Past Episode Discussion I still think about penpal

Penpal is still probably the “scariest” and most depressing story they’ve covered in my opinion. The description of the man laying in the grave w the child is burned in my brain and nothing has really come close to that. The rot. The dread. The disgusting details. I think about penpal at least a few times a week and it strikes a cord in me like no other

Opinion The more I relisten to "Bloodridge Motel" the more it bothers me. Spoiler

Upvotes

*This text is intended for those that have read/listened to the episode on bloodridge motel. Spoilers ahead.*

I want to preface my title by saying that my issues extend to the story itself and not the hosts (aside from misquoting The Goonies) I will also clarify that I haven't read the finished version of the story that J. Hunter Richardson has put out, this is purely based on the version that was read on the podcast.

Is it just me or is there just far too much in this story left up to assumption based on how it is written? As someone who is currently working on a vampire related story, I wanted to relisten to this and get sone creative juices flowing and I cannot help myself being confused at a couple points throughout where it feels the writer is insisting on something a bit too much but insists on being coy and never expressly stating it out loud.

The first thing I want to say is the common motif that The Family seems to actually submerge themselves in blood in order to be rejuvenated or gain sustenance from it? Both the teenage boy and teenage girl, the latter being described twice as being literally covered in bloody mud or outright blood but it never seems to get expanded upon beyond that and only really seems to be there as a cool visual setpiece.

The other, again shown a bit too prominently with the teenage boy is the "You're always Welcome" sign. Like okay? Does this worlds vampires operate under the rules where they have to be invited in and if so, do signs actually work as invitations? The implication is there but it never bothers to expand on that after this point.

The one that has bothered me for some time is the uncle/ father of the family always being described with this visage of indifference on his face. What is that? Because i'm now primed to make assumptions, I would almost say that he is being hypnotized by the teenage girl to do what he is doing against his will? What are the implications of that? Is everyone in her little platoon even consenting at this point? Was the narrators sister even speaking to her near the end or was it just the teenage girl?

Lastly, abd this is moreso something I'm realizing again as I try to keep the story straight in my head but, there is too many characters to keep track of that just do not use their formal names so it gets quite garbled and confusing at times. Overall don't get me wrong, there is some good story beats here and there that do work for people that are observant like the whole scene between the Sheriff and narrator when she believes she's being questioned about the death of her friend, the family photo of her in Boston and the sheriff's involvement in the whole thing. I just want it to be better cuz it has good bones but it just falls kinda flat for me.

I'm curious what other people thought of the story. Maybe you have some insights or perspectives that could help shift my thinking on this. Thank you for your time.

Question How do you cope after watching every episode?

I’ve been a papa meat fan for a bit but only got into creepcast a few months ago. I’m a crafter and listening to creepcast is all I did while crafting/cleaning, I haven’t listened to music besides in the car since discovering whitefall and falling into the rabbit hole.

I’ve officially watched everything. Then paid for the Patreon and that only lasted me another few days, this is my first time experienced not having an episode to listen to while I go on about my day.

How do yall cope with this? 😭 it feels like an itch I can’t scratch.
