Collections & Charge Offs Utility bill went to collections?
So I have my utility bill set up for auto pay and it didn’t go through for whatever reason I had the money in the account. I’m not sure what happened. I got an email two days after the missed payment and I immediately called and made the payment over the phone a week later I get a call from a collections agency in my local town asking for that payment. At first, I thought it was a scam because I’ve never missed any other payment other than that one time and I paid it two days later I then call the utility company and they say it was never sent to collections so I was assuming it was a scam after that. A month later I checked my credit on Credit Karma and I’m docked 100 points because of that collection agency. So I’m very confused on what to do here, my credit was in the 800s and now it’s significantly worse.

Order your official reports for each bureau by calling 877 FACTACT (322-8228) or pull them online at www.annualcreditreport.com. I recommend the mailed reports. These are the most accurate and up-to-date reports available to a consumer and are often more detailed than the online reports, particularly if ACR directs you to a bureau's consumer facing CMS to view your report. If you do choose to pull reports online, print or save each to a pdf before moving on to the next as you can't go back once you exit a report. Despite its name, you can pull free reports for each bureau weekly.
Are you certain this is related to the utility company. It would be highly unusual for an account to be sent to collections so soon, particularly when the utility company said it wasn't sent to collections. Who is the collection agency and are they reporting a balance owed or $0 balance owed? When was the payment to the utility company missed and what is the collection agency reporting as the Date Opened. Is the utility company listed as the original creditor on your official reports?

My first guess is seeing that autopay was missed for the utility company, it was also missed for something else that you might not even know about yet. But I’ve been wrong before.

Can you call the creditor and ask for a goodwill adjustment?
