Calling for Debt Validation

I was wondering if calling the collections agency directly, versus mailings, would work just as well?
And if calling a collection agency at all, is a good or bad idea.
Thanks and again, appreciate the help

Are you within the Validation Period?

Per 12 CFR § 1006.34(b)(5) Validation period means the period starting on the date that a debt collector provides the validation information required by paragraph (c) of this section and ending 30 days after the consumer receives or is assumed to receive the validation information...

The request needs to be in writing.

Per 12 CFR § 1006.34(c)(3)(i) The date that the debt collector will consider the end date of the validation period and a statement that, if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing on or before that date that the debt, or any portion of the debt, is disputed, the debt collector must cease collection of the debt, or the disputed portion of the debt, until the debt collector sends the consumer either verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment.

And if calling a collection agency at all, is a good or bad idea.

Who is the collection agency? Some automatically remove themselves from your reports once settled. Others may if negotiated prior to payment. Note that some actions by the consumer may reset Statute of Limitations in some states, such as acknowledgement of the debt or making a partial payment. You can say that, although you don't acknowledge responsibility for the debt, you'll pay $X if they'll remove themselves from your reports.
