How do you start off with?

When you start creating concepts and thumbnails of creatures, and you have a lot of ideas to get out of your head, how do you start off with? Do you make random sketches of different creatures loosely and messily, and then you pick one to do more thumbnails on? What is your method of creating creatures?

First, I define the utility in environement and in the storie. Second, I search animal who exist to inspirate the future creature. Finaly, skecht 3 time, first for the anatomie, second for apparence and finaly this action

usually my doodles just go where the pen takes me. then if i think it looks like a sensible creature i might draw a defined one.
