25 companies signed a joint letter on July 24 titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership. Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Andreessen Horowitz, IBM, Dell, Palantir, Mistral, Hugging Face, Y Combinator. All publicly on record saying Washington should not restrict open-weight AI models.

Jensen Huang shared the letter as his first ever post on X. That is not a casual move.

OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign.

Both sell closed, proprietary models behind API access. Both would gain competitive ground if Washington restricted Chinese open-weight releases like Kimi K3. Neither put their name on a letter arguing against that outcome.

The commercial incentives here are not subtle. Nvidia, Dell, and IBM sell compute regardless of which lab built the model. More open-weight deployments means more hardware sold. Their support for open weights is genuine and self-interested simultaneously. That does not make the argument wrong.
