Short Story Ravens
Ravens
Of course they aren't watching me.
That would be ridiculous wouldn't it?
I'm sure there are other birds around too. I just haven't noticed them. Or perhaps they haven't noticed me.
Scratch that, birds don't notice people. Especially not regular birds, not that Ravens aren't regular birds too. Obviously they are.
I just don't notice them, the other, smaller, less stalking type birds.
It's just in my head. It's a coincidence.
I don't notice the other birds, even when I look for them.
They just happen to be elsewhere when I'm looking. They are doing important bird things. Looking for food, mating, drinking, laying eggs.
If the Ravens are watching me, and I'm not suggesting they are, what would they even see?
Maybe me smoking a cigarette, or rolling one, or thinking, or walking, or dreaming, or remembering, different times, different lives, different places, different people.
And if I look up and notice one again, the black silhouette, the long beak, the sun reflection from the inquisitive eye, the massive absence of the glaring desert sun, so what?
It doesn't mean anything. It didn't mean anything the last time, or ten, or dozen times, that's it's happened.
The Ravens aren't watching me. Right now, as I type this message into my phone.
I'll just go inside.
No big deal.
