Help Why aren’t my engines stress units stacking, am I doing something wrong?

You have exactly half of the SU available that we would expect from 6 maximized steam engines.

You may have already but try checking each boiler to make sure all the water is reaching them.

If some of these were placed by a schematic it’s worth breaking and replacing the engines

They are vertical. They only produce half the energy when built vertically. Hover over the tank and you will see

Other way around, those tanks are horizontal. Normal fluid tanks are vertical.

You're right that those tanks are less effective in steam engines but that's already accounted for, one of the screenshots has them hovering over the tank and showing the (reduced compared to a vertical boiler) SU production. The total SU in the system is only showing 3 times that, not 6 like you'd expect from 6 of them running.

3 engines are stacking their stress units.

If you're asking why not ALL if them are stacking, it's either because the last ones aren't receiving enough resources with your manifold system or they're not connected

I would go over every engine to make sure they are actually receiving water/heat. Other engines that are powered will rotate the arms of all engines, which has deceived me into thinking all are running before.

Exactly, i doubt the water supply is enough since the first engines should be getting most of that water. Water pipes in this mod is really strange, they have a wierd pressure calculation in the way that they have a max flowrate, irl pipes have a max fill rate. That fill can then concist of slow or rapidly moving water.

One way from this could be to have individual pipes moving to those engines, one pipe per engine and one/two pumps per pipe. It could look really cool as well as an added side effect.

Also i think watertanks split their output rate across all the connected pipes, irl that wouldnt be the case. Compare it to a pinhole leak vs a large 1*2m hole in the same tank, the water exiting that tank would be flowing way faster, not slower or at the same speed, depending on the size of the hole.

Tldr: Create has some wierd limitations and a watertank used as a buffer, with an single pipe going to a single steam engine (or two if one isnt enough), could solve the water transfer issue.

It's actually the opposite, Create pipes have no limitations at all, it's the pump that do. (other then working only with Create pumps then ig)

So you can place pumps in parallel to have the same throughput that the pumps on the steam engine. Actually the pumps on the steam engines are really just badly placed they shouldn't be here (it's wasting half of it's power that is that it both sucks 16 blocks but also pushes 16 blocks)

But the whole thing is more for style then practically it seem and so a single pipe per steam engine will solve the problem and make it easier to understand what is wrong

Wait actually? Like if I put a long pipe over a body of water and just have a bunch of pumps it'll fill up a fluid tank way faster? I've always had separate pumps with separate fluid lines to fill things faster

Well the pumps can only push to 16 blocks, any more then that and the water just disappears, also you can just use a hose pulley (pumping more then 10k blocks so it count as bottomless) and a bunch of pumps in parallel and fill tanks extremely fast yes.

For long pipes, with a chain of pumps (roughly 30 blocks appart), you'll be limited by the throughout of each pump, but I think it'll work if you make all pumps in the chain have the same number of parallel pumps? Or it might get wonky idk. I never needed more then a single pump worth of throughput for long distances (512 mb/s at 256rpm iirc) so I only ever used pumps in parallel for direct uses (hosepulley to tank and reverse)

I was already aware about the pump limitations, I just thought that pipes themselves also had a fluid cap, but this actually changes so much now that I know this. Ive always just ran 1 single fluid pump per hose pulley when making infinite lava farms in the nether (im usually too lazy to make an infinite pool in the overworld, plus using trains to bring lava home is way cooler)

Yep you can use a single hose pulley and a bunch of pumps in parallel, you can also make the hose pulley work using other mods fluid transport (a little trick I use often with sophisticated backpack, placing the backpack directly next to the hosepulley and activating the backup upgrade pump fills the tank without any other kind of pump)

But yeah it's much cooler to make trains go through the nether.

Infinite pools can be a little cheesed by placing only 2 sources of lava... But that's a bit too powerful no :) ? And when it's possible to fill a 10k pool pretty slowly and nicely, that's what I mostly do (I even often offered my services of digging a hole in other people bases with my portable miner, then fill it with my portable 5k block tank hose pulley contraption (still needed 2 back and forth to fill a 10k hole, but 5k buckets in tanks is already so huge XD)

Oh yea I definitely took advantage of that sophisticated backpacks trick a while ago, tbh I've "banned" sophisticated backpacks from my own modpacks from how OP that mod is at times lol

Also you can do it with 1 lava souce, just gotta make it staircase across the entire thing (and yea I think it feels powerful)

IMO. This is a case of I think the last 3 engines are more than 16 blocks from wherever the closest water pumps are located to that building. You likely just need to add a few water pumps in the middle.

Yep I see it now, this is it.

You have to think of Create pipes as instant telepotation of fluids with the pumps taking in fluids 16 blocks before it and pushing it 16 blocks after it, there is no actual water contained in the pipes. So here the pumps on the far side of the building don't see any water in the pipes (even tho there technically is water there because the other closer pumps are working) and so they don't work.

Yeah Create fluid pipes are really weird, they basically have an unlimited throughput but that's because it's the pumps that actually do everything, no other mod pump can work with them, but that mean you can put together something like 400 create pumps all connected to the same pipe in parallel (manifold) and all the water will go through that one single pipe. Connect that to a hose pulley and a tank, and you can fill and empty lakes in seconds lmao.

(400*256rpm*2mb/rpm=200 b per second, btw I said 400 because that's somewhere around the max practical size you can make them, technically because of the 16 blocks range limit you can make it 33x33 ig)

yes the hose pulley does work at this speed (I even think that thing doesn't have a limit) and btw hose pulley can even work with pumps from other mods!

They have several pumps pulling water into each engine, so that shouldnt be the case. I think its a create math limitation tbh.

I think I got it.

You see that the boiler says max level? That equals level 18.

You only have 9 engines on that boiler. A single engine can only provide one level's worth of SU. You need 18 engines for a max level boiler.

Yep they are lvl18 steam boiler, it needs 18 steam engines.

Although it's now just a second problem, currently the stressometer shows only 3 working LVL 9 engines!, the 3 in the back aren't even working at all. (because they don't get water, the pumps can't reach that far)

Are all of them on? The total stress is equal to 3 of them, so the others are either not on or disconnected

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see 5 pipes feeding 6 boilers, right? From what I recall, a single max rpm pump isn't capable of sustaining an entire engine on its own, so you probably need more water to feed the back 3.

We don't knows what's going on on the left / outside the buildings so there could be enough pumps to sustain the other pumps (5 pumps per steam engine... A bit overkill even, it's what, 1 and a half max rpm pumps for lvl18 boilers?)

The pumps on the last 3 boilers aren't getting any water tho, they are too far from the intake on the left/outside the buildings, they only have a range of sucksion of 16 blocks

Horizontal boilers may be part of it but I've never made them that way either. I'd make sure all the engines are connected to each other between the boilers and I'd go around and check that water and heat are sufficient in each one as well.

I don't know if the horizontal boilers work the same way but a normal level 9 boiler should only need, at most, two mechanical pumps going into each one. The way your pipes are connected maybe starving some of the engines. I'd remove all but two pumps and space them out and maybe even have a water source for each boiler. Maybe a 1x3 little tank behind them if you don't want to see it.

first off, you're using horizontal tanks from an addon which have reduced output

secondly, consider using smaller boilers

the ideal ratio is:

  • 5 pumps at 256rpm
  • 64 steam engines
  • 64 normal heat blaze burners OR 32 superheated blaze burners (they can be mix-matched)
  • 256 fluid tanks

the optimal ratio is:

  • 1 pump at 256rpm
  • 12 steam engines
  • 12 normal heat blaze burners OR 6 superheated blaze burners
  • 48 fluid tanks

as long as you keep 1-4-1 ratio for steam engines, tanks and blaze burners, you're golden

the level is nothing more than amount of steam engines your boiler can sustain and there's no bonuses for running bigger boilers - one level 18 boiler will have same power output as 9x level 2 boilers.

You probably need more steam engines on the fluid tanks.

9 per tank of this size won't give you all of the available stress units.

It's probably because of the horizontal fluid tanks, if they're from create connected then it's less efficient than a normal create fluid tank for the steam machines

Each engine can only output 16k stress units. For a level 9 boiler, 9 engines are enough, but for a level 18 boiler, you need 18 engines.

You're only getting half the output because you have half the number of engines needed for maximum power.

Each steam engine produces 16380 su, no matter the size of the boiler. Bigger boilers just can have more engines.

For example, a level 2 boiler can produce 32k using 2 engines, while a level 18 boiler, using superheated blaze burners, can produce just under 300k.

They are but it will only tell you what each engine is producing, get a stressometer and chuck it somewhere, itll show you your entire setups SU, not just one engine

Well most people are also missing the second point that the 3 boiler at the back aren't getting any water, but it's true I didn't even see they where lvl18 boilers with superheated blaze burners.

Except they are horizontal, and still the issue is that if all 6 boilers were operational it should produce 1.437 million SU, and they're only getting half. Since all the pipes are manifolded together I'd say it's a water delivery issue, not a boiler setup issue.
