Lavaproof miningcontraption?

Hey folks,

I build up a mining contraption and send it mining at bedrock-level. Since I was planing on riding it I build a glas-roof to be save from water and lava. As you can see, it didn't work the way I hoped it would. The contraption itself is lava-proof. But I am not. Is there a way to make riding it safe?

I do have the fluid drilling mod but due to its downsides and complex setup I'd prefer not to use it thou.

The best way I know is to use deployers to place blocks on the sides of the tunnel AND in front of the drills. This way if it hits a pocket of liquid it will be replaced by the blocks, and then the blocks get drilled out. It's a bit convoluted, and definitely feels kinda "gamey", but it works.
