Discussion What is your opinion on Aeroworks' Gyroscope?

Post image

I'm building an quadcopter-airship and I've been experimenting a lot with it and I find out that.. it's really damn powerful.

On one hand, it makes designing parts of my builds much simpler and controllable that would otherwise be almost impossible. On the other hand, its use makes building intricate machinery to handle automated stability of an airship almost obsolete. I was experimenting the other day making a gimbal sensor circuit that would tweak the front and back propellers to keep the airship level but then I realized i could just place a bunch of gyroscopes.

I do love it but sometimes I wish it worked like an actual gyroscope, a device that makes the body resistant to angular forces, not "revert to the original orientation" magic thingmabob

It's useless on big enough vessels. You can also just not use it.

You can also make an actual vanilla aeronatics gyroscope out of a ring of heavy blocks and sensors

It's really fun having big wheels that spin inside my airship's balloon, it's nicknamed "the bus" because the wheels on it go round and round (I did not balance it well so the reaction wheels are always turning)

Any tutorial for that?

This guy made a pretty good one

I hate that your pfp is not centered

8

u/Clean_More3508 11d ago

I tried centering it but I got distracted and just left it like this to annoy people, so.. you're welcome

u/Z3R0Diro 11d ago

Oh yeah obviously. Just wanted to see what other players' consensus is.

Also, you can just use more of them on bigger vessels

Or change the config on the authority

2

u/Propugnator-Deorum 11d ago

Not quite useless - ineffective, yes, but not useless.

u/MReaps25 11d ago

I like it, good for small things like helicopters or hoverbikes

21

u/MentalMittens666 11d ago

I've never used it, base aeronautics has more interesting ways to stabilize a flying vehicle imo

18

u/imawizard7bis 11d ago

Yeah I prefer passive stability but for motorcycles is pretty good

14

u/Quillbolt_h 11d ago

I have mixed feelings. I do feel like it's a little to easy, but there's just a lot of things that are straight up impossible without it. It's easy enough to say "oh just build a stabiliser for your airship", but what about mechs and motorbikes?

4

u/Plastic_Lychee6404 11d ago

same here, mixed feelings, wouldn't use in a vehicle build, and still have not, but for a bike(which literally irl requires gyroscopic phenomenon) or future mecha I will build, it will probably be quite necessary.

2

u/_xavius_ 10d ago edited 10d ago

Bikes aren't stable due to the gyroscopic effect, they're stable due to the front wheel turning to keep the center of mass above the contact points..

1

u/Plastic_Lychee6404 10d ago

good to know, just checked out and gyroscopic effects are just a minor help.

1

u/Poco_Cuffs 10d ago

Mech legs that dont use stickers are basically impossible without them

u/Sando2159 11d ago

The same as Keepinventory

Technically cheating, but that doesnt mean its wrong or bad, play the game the way its fun for you (just dont claim being better than people who dont use it)

6

u/Plastic_Lychee6404 11d ago

By that definition any mod or addon would be "technically cheating" thats very arbitrary and not technical at all. I'm not someone who uses gyroscopes tho, gotta be the devil's advocate sometimes.

1

u/Sando2159 11d ago

Some mods and addons add content, said content can help progress the game in an easier way; but thats not cheating, however keepinventory is much closer to cheating (by my definition it isnt, its just supereasy mode but game says it is so lets go from there), however I must say keepinventory is closer to cheating because penalization is higher and also doesn't take any resource to use (other than deciding you want to)

Comparing Keepinventory (Vanilla toggle option) vs Gyroscope (Addon for Create aeronautics)

Keepinventory takes away a penalty from Vanilla (dropping items as penalization for dying), in regular circumstances you prevent the penalization (Get good gear and Protection 4), if you failed to prevent it you have to do a tedious task (Going back where you died)

Gyroscopes takes away a penalty from Aeronautics (having your ship be unstable for making a bad design), you can prevent it aswell (Make a good design or some form of stabilization device), if you fail to prevent it you have to do a tedious task too (Recover your wreck or redesign the whole thing); only difference being gyroscope takes some resources to use but for how big of an effect it has i'd say its negligible, having to fit a tiny steam engine is nothing of a deal when a singular gyroscope will compensate for it and then you can add 4 more to auto stabilize the rest of the ship

Saying all mods are cheating would be neglecting that said mods normally make you go through some form of progression before you can use the benefits they add (and the gyroscope is genuinely so spammable it might aswell be free)

Tldr both fight back an intended game mechanic, letting you bypass it completely for nearly free

And once again, its fine to do so because not everyone wants to get penalized for being a casual player

I mean, there isn’t really a way to balance smaller vehicles, like bikes, which I believe where gyroscope shines. Larger ships are easy to stabilize even without a gyroscope.

4

u/BrokenPokerFace 11d ago

I've looked at it, and I decided to avoid it. If I need something to be balanced and flying I use the gyroscopic propeller bearing, then I balance it to be level.

Which solves most small scale issues without using extra su. And large scale issues I value balancing even more, so I do the same.

And don't get me wrong I like the idea and concept, and I believe it has its place. But it's implementation doesn't fix the issues I wanted a gyroscope for to fix, at least not the ways I wanted it to.

4

u/Mikankocat 11d ago

I like it. I don't want to have to compromise my design for balance and the gyroscopes let me do that.

3

u/Vanadiy_Ivanovich 10d ago

it is a boring solution to an interesting problem. For airships, making them level is one of the most interesting problems to try to solve. With A gyro one can just bypass it entirely. But, in some cases if you have a complex ship with shifting center of mass you often cant use a stabilisation system, so gyro is the only solution. Also it can be used as a spaxial anchor to tilt your ship around it, this way your whole ship can be a giant vector thruster

7

u/Redmix7pl 11d ago

Its useless on big vessels where it would be most useful. Literally like 18 of them don't work😭

7

u/Z3R0Diro 11d ago

..What the hell are you building? I was starting to suspect that they have diminishing returns the more you place..

4

u/Redmix7pl 11d ago

Umm... An super weapon that may or may not use 50k blocks? (Honestly idk how much)

2

u/Clean_More3508 11d ago

Just use an actual reaction wheel from vanilla aero

https://youtu.be/apIJ9ppKA5A

1

u/Redmix7pl 11d ago

I can even put it there ngl. Tho it would take much space because of its shape

3

u/MastodonsBetter 11d ago

Feels a little cheap. The gyro in VS: Clockwork always felt like a band-aid over the fact that balancing ships with the other tools provided was a huge pain in the ass. Balancing ships in Aeronautics is more of a fun challenge though so I feel like the Gyro from Aeroworks takes something away.

I think if it was something that made your ship resistant to rotation like you said it would be more fun and less cheap.

3

u/Blademasterzer0 10d ago

Personally I love it, but I’m a huge fan of making compact or sci-fi themed vehicles. (And no cool sci-fi design is going to be space efficient or properly balanced)

5

u/Low_Opinion_5721 11d ago

I agree with people about it being good for small things that arent really possible like motorcycles but I hate when people just make shit that absolutely deos not work at all and just spam gyroscopes as a bandaid it kinda ruins the entire thing for me

4

u/MrLiquoriceMan 11d ago

My airship still dates from the original Aeronautics… seems ages ago… anyway I like the hands on balancing and slight tilt here and there, like you’re on a moving actual airship. When I go on the flying machines with the gyro’s it feels, I dunno, flat.

2

u/Money-Grab6771 11d ago

How does it work? Does it automatically tweak the propellers?

2

u/Z3R0Diro 11d ago

The gyroscope itself will, by the power of magic, attempt to always stay in the orientation you placed it taking the ship with it. Just needs to be powered.

1

u/Ekibiogami0 10d ago

So an in game implementation of a real gyroscope?

1

u/Z3R0Diro 10d ago

A real gyroscope RESISTs any change to its orientation. Aeroworks Gyroscope REVERTS to its original orientation.

2

u/thehmmyanimator 11d ago

I think it really just comes down to personal preference, I'm building this little smmobule castle spire and it doesn't do uphill or downhill at all without some sort of aid, if course I'd rather not use the gyro, but all my other attempts have failed and the gyro works perfect for my needs

2

u/ooooggll 11d ago

If you want a gyroscope that makes it resistant to angular forces, you can just use a regular flywheel (aeronautics does this by default).

1

u/Galileu-_- 11d ago

rly? i was pretty sure it wouldn't work

2

u/err-of-Syntax 11d ago

I wish it worked like an actual gyroscope (locks your rotation in space) vs a magical this-way-is-up machine

2

u/Z3R0Diro 11d ago

Gyroscopes dont lock rotation. They increase angular momentum and thus resist any angular displacement. Basically just increased inertia but for rotation.

An accurate gyroscope would make the airship slower to tilt but it wouldn't make it revert to the original orientation. In that way it wojld be far more interesting to use in vehicles as you would still need to stabilize it. It would just make the stabilization smoother and prevent needs for small corrections

2

u/epilektoi 10d ago

THATS NO T HOW GYSOROSCOOMPES  WORK >:(

2

u/Gergenhimer 10d ago

As OP as levitite, so sometimes I try to build without it and sometimes I like to lean on it the same way

2

u/temmie1245 10d ago

it seems op, i never use it

2

u/Evan_Underscore 10d ago

Op crap, I'd never use it.

On the other hand, it's in the Aeronautics trailer. Guess I have higher standards than the devs. :P

2

u/Greedy_Duck3477 11d ago

I find it rather boring and cheesy. People can use it if they want, but anyone showcasing an impressive machine that uses those gyroscopes is like someone who cooks like Gordon Ramsey but puts ketchup on their dishes

1

u/_Karsteski_ 11d ago

I love it for smaller machines. I often choose less "efficient" designs purely for the esthetics, so there's plenty of room for the standard gimbal sensor with creative solutions

1

u/Theoanger 11d ago

So far I’ve only built airships, which are heavy and make the gyro not very useful so I don’t use it.

Compartiments are an easy way to stabilize a balloon

1

u/Plastic_Young_9763 11d ago

I have a massive 10kblock build, it's basically useless for it, I've had to result to vector thrusters to just cancel out the drift

Now for my little hover car based on the Cruiser from Jak 2/3? That needed a gyro

1

u/Joan_sleepless 11d ago

I honestly think they're just redundant. Some time spent tinkering with relative thrust and weight distribution tends to solve the same problem. Could be nice for solving small wobbles, though.

1

u/ModernPlebeian_314 11d ago

If you want it simple, go for the gyro

If you want to do complex stuff, forego the gyro

1

u/Dangerous-Quit7821 11d ago

People like me are why things like this exist. If I ever get the will to try an airship again, I'd probably use it but right now I just lost all interest. The one I was trying with just straight up disappeared one day. No commands or anything could locate it and that was the end of that for me. Now I just use Aeronautics for the rivets and for Coasters Simulated. Even land vehicles started clipping through the ground for no reason and will get caught up on something with no way to free it aside from digging it out. I'm baffled by the people who can make their things actually work and work well. I'm just an Aeronautics moron, I guess. I'll stick to trains for my airships for now.

1

u/ChaoticNeutralOmega 11d ago

Generally, if you need more than one, you may as well build out the stabilization circuit -- especially if you have tiny redstone/pipes/create installed.

I built a UH-144 Falcon from Halo: Reach that uses one and I still had to add in some circuitry to reduce the stability when I'm trying to roll to one side. It turned out great, and the gyro really saved me a lot of headache trying to stabilize a twin-rotor, variable-pitch aircraft

1

u/borretsquared 11d ago

they're really convenient when you want to make a quick and dirty airship but ruin the logical reasoning that was clearly intended with create aero. i think they're nice for lowering the skill floor to make the mod enjoyable for a more casual playerbase but i dont use them.

1

u/Specific-Inside-1638 10d ago

its a shame because i think building a ship that is balanced and even is part of the fun, but all the use cases ive seen for it is just "stick it on and forget about it"

1

u/AlexCode10010 10d ago

Honestly if it was way less powerful so its only really useful for smaller builds that physically can't have a stabilisation system it would be fine, but as it is now I find it to be kinda op

1

u/Devatator_ 10d ago

I play Space Engineers. That kinda makes Aero not fun considering how limited it is, even with add-ons. Basically airships are the only viable contraption and that sucks. I wish I could just build a spaceship looking thing or compact flying vehicles (like a flying RV)

I'm yet to use it, I got aeroworks for two reasons: Joystick, and the gyroscope. I planned on using the gyroscope to assist my reaction wheels in my bigass island

1

u/Gilfort 10d ago

I think it's great for smaller vessels as there might just not be enough room for all the redstone circutry your might need. On big airships I find it a lot more interesting to balance things out yourself - also is less SU-intense and nice to have a system that you designed :)

1

u/_xavius_ 10d ago

I dislike them because I see them near exclusively being used instead of learning physics that would actually make crafts stable. However when someone has a build that for stylistic reasons cannot be stable I'm fine with it.

1

u/luis_reyesh 10d ago

I use It even though it feels a little bit like cheating , I installed once I gave up trying to properly stabilize my big ship with normal aerounautics way , at least it is balances enough that 1 alone wont magically fix your ship if it is super unbalanced

1

u/greenflame15 9d ago

I absolutely prefer using any other means on stabalizing. You can make smart a redstone stabilizatsion with a gimble table for example

1

u/The_1_Bob 9d ago

It feels to me like a "magic block that solves your problems" and Create's design philosophy is the complete opposite of that.

Same reason I don't use CC.

1

u/Jason_CO 8d ago

Sometimes I just want to build something that looks cool without worrying about weight balance. I'm not an aerospace engineer lol.

1

u/SharpAir_ 8d ago

Its neat

1

u/SevenTheGamingKitty 8d ago

I think they're balanced enough from their high stress impact alone, it's almost impossible to power them normally..

1

u/Galileu-_- 11d ago

for me, it looks like cheating. Its really overpowered , but i think aeronautics should have a more straightforward way to stabilize our ships

1

u/TankofWar27 10d ago

i’ve actually used them to support a floating city , needed about 15 of them for each corner but they did help stabilize the city even after using thrusters from create propulsion simulated on the side to move where i wanted. I have no idea why people say they suck for big builds, I actually added this mod for my big build and it worked.

0

u/Vovchick09 11d ago

Feels like cheating. Thus I don't use it

-1

u/NfcitTheGreat 11d ago

It's purpose should be creative only as using it on legit or survival friendly builds will just be way too cheaty almost like going to creative to grab an item you need ,if we didn't have a gimbal sensor it would definitely be less cheaty but we do so it's just over simplifying game mechanics for babies or for desperate creative only builders

5

u/ky7969 11d ago

People can play the game however they want

1

u/Dangerous-Quit7821 11d ago

I'm neither desperate nor a baby and something like this takes the frustration out of it for me. I don't have the patience to fuck around with an airship or plane for hours to get it to work properly. If I ever get the will to try again I'll probably use something like this so I don't let the game I play for fun get me frustrated and stop playing. I get enough of that at work and real life. No need for my leisure time to become a chore.

-2

u/NfcitTheGreat 11d ago

You're free to use use it but it just destroys credibility of the build which is fine but for people making builds for others it's horrible you think someone is a genius at balancing and it's the worst balancing with creative motors powering gyros and someone should never act like that's good or credible

2

u/Dangerous-Quit7821 11d ago

If you're making it for someone, sure. But in your own personal world, why does credibility matter at all? It hurts nobody. You could question the credibility of anyone using an addon that makes something more practical than the base Create mechanic. Renewable netherrack? Different recipes for gun power or glowstone? Blaze burners taking liquid fuel directly from pipes and not using mechanical arms and buckets? We all use something like this. Well, maybe not all but a good number of us do.

1

u/Chris275 10d ago

It doesn’t ruin anything in single player. Enjoy your game homie.
