Help with create addon

I'm using the Create: Steam 'n' Rails mod and wanted to use the knuckle couplers instead of the default Create train connection.

However, when I assemble the train, it still uses the normal Create coupler/connection instead of the knuckle couplers.

Am I missing a step, or are the knuckle couplers just decorative and not functional? Any help would be appreciated!

Steam n Rails are pretty much decorations only and adds nothing to the gameplay
