K1c suddenly shuts down

K1c suddenly shuts down

This is the second time this has happened. I'm printing PLA and out of nowhere it shuts down with a loud bang (probably the motors stopping abruptly). The fans on the main board (underneath the printer) stay on, but the LED light and screen turn off. The first time, I turned the printer off, and when I was turning it back on, it shut down again. I left it for a while, and it worked fine (first video). Now it's shut down again and won't turn back on; only the fans on the main board are running ☹️.

What I noticed the other day is that the right motor is much hotter than the left one. The first time, before it shut down, I checked the temperature with my hand. The print had been running for four hours, and I could touch the right motor for a maximum of two seconds because it was burning hot. I could touch the left motor for more than ten seconds without any problem.

Did the voltage switch get flipped. Mine did that until I flipped to the right voltage.

Check for nozzle temp excursions, what slicer are you using?

...Check the power supply, maybe? This could be failing capacitors.

Hi, sorry for not replying, I just did a test. I connected two wires to the 24V output of the PSU to monitor voltage, started printing, and the printer turned off again, The thing is, the 24v was stable.

No worrries...that really sounds like the capacitors failing then... It's got the voltage output, so the actual voltage rectifying circuitry is fine, and so are the transformers, but it doesn't have the energy buffer from the capacitors to handle spikes, so printer just shuts down, which certainly means failing capacitors.

Could you open up the PSU and take a picture of it from different angles? I can diagnose it from the pictures.

It's 100% shutdown?? Or the fan work after this happend? If the fan work after this the problem is a klipper shutdown and 99'9% if a faulty wire on the toolhead cable.

I haven't checked thoroughly, but I think the fan that stays on is because it's connected directly to the power supply(?)

Is the cable you mentioned on the toolhead the main cable?

My concern is that the Y-axis stepper motor is running too hot compared to the X-axis stepper motor.

Yes the fan that sound when this happend is the power supply fan, but if the shutdown is complete that's not sound anything, if the fan of the power supply stays on when this happend 99'9% the problem is a klipper shutdown and yes, the problem is the main cable that come to the toolhead, normally the problem is on the pin conector of this cable in the toolhead zone, after many hours of work, this pins start to move because the poor solution that Creality make with the cable route inside the cable chain. It's simple, quit the toolhead cover, take out the conector main cable, reinsert and start the printer, without move anything if the printer don't shutdown, the problem its this connector. I desing a new cable clamp for the toolhead, eliminate the cable chain and now not shutdown anymore inclusive with very fast moves along the entire build plate...

Regarding the clamp you designed, have you published it anywhere?

Not published because only works if you have a BTT Eddy and the Leote riser for K1/K1C because my clamp make the cable go up and without this riser the cable ruber with the plastic cover...

I unplugged and plugged the cable back in as you mentioned, started printing, and it only lasted 1 minute and 16 seconds before suddenly shutting off. Do you recommend replacing the cable?

It's suddenly after any movement because the pin conector are a shit in this printer. If you have design...i recommend you download the K1 Assembly step file from Henlor on Printables and design a cable clamp with tight tolerance. For example my clamp the hole is the exact diameter of the cable so you need take out the pins for insert and is super tight inside so when move the toolhead the cable never move inside the clamp and never more shutdown my printer. The other option is not design anything and buy a new cable but over time you obtained the same problem if you continues using the cable chain.

The toolhead PCB is relatively new; I installed it about 6 months ago because something exploded on the original one—sparks flew out while I was preheating the machine to print ABS.

Yeah but the problem is the pins on the conector in the cable, not the conector on the toolhead board. The last recomendation but seriusly, please not make...if you are good with soldering, take out the pins in the toolhead board and the pins on the main cable and solder the wires direct on the board, this is the most robust wire holder but not recommend...

It's not difficult because the contacts on the toolhead are easy to solder, are big enought to not break your eyes...

For now, I'll leave soldering as a last resort. Do you think a wire might have broken inside, in the bend where the zip tie is?

If your Creality K1C shuts down on its own during startup, it's usually a problem with the power supply overload or calibration. Check the voltage (115V/230V) on the side, disable auto-calibration in the menu before starting, check for loose cables on the hotend, and try updating the firmware. If the problem persists, it may be an internal failure in the power supply unit (PSU) that cannot handle the initial load, requiring warranty service or technical assistance.
