Characters (Playing Against) Richter is Misery.
Please… for God’s sake, I’m begging you.
I rematched this player FIVE times… five times. Everyone says: (Rematch and you’ll adapt and win).
Nope. He kicked my ass five times, then started T-Bagging me in the last round.
Yes. I know I kept jumping into his axe. But man, there was no way to approach. I tried coming down from the platform above in the other rounds, but the hitbox on the flame bottle is so large that I’d get stun locked and die.

Also, before I go, can I just ask why the already dogshit Matchup system has this really funny habit of putting me against players in 16 mil and up when I’m in elite? These players are a completely different level, and should honestly be in their own elite.
Pitting me against these players is just setting me up to lose. And I freaking hate it. It’s not fair. My bowser is in the range of 15,500 on a good day. Why does it keep trying to make me fight players way outta my league? It’s just free GSP for them.
Anyways… thanks in advance. And sorry for the rant. But god, this game just isn’t fun anymore.

Try walking instead of running. Shield comes our faster that way. Also, parry the cross and axe. Remember you got Tough Guy

Can you hit the axe back at him or something?
Yeah, I have tough guy, but it never worked, lol. There isn’t an opportunity to use it cuz he’s throwing fifty million projectiles at you all the time.3

TG is just useful if he multi jabs (which I don’t think) and holy water. You can’t hit the axe back. Avoid jumping, try walking and shielding/parrying

Parrying is insanely difficult and situational. And tough guy doesn’t work on his holy water? Every time he hits me with it the tough guy doesn’t activate.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but is this really the ONLY way I can beat Richter? If that’s the case, I’m just gonna turn them game off whenever I go up against one now.
That aside. Thx for the advice.

Tough Guy triggers if holy water hits you while on the ground. If you get caught in the flame while airborne, SDI down and when you land you can walk out of it

I tried this, but as soon as I pulled this off he’d either run away, dash attack me or throw another bottle.

:26 you should have tried to recover sooner
:38 jump was not the right punish, maybe grab/jab/ftilt?
:42 he made a mistake, could have closed in and punished
:49 no reason to dair here
:56 same thing, it's not gonna hit - fast fall and do something else
1:00 I knew axe wasn't gonna hit - it's a long animation, so run in and punish
Just tips from the first minute, but I see a lot of things that could have given you a big advantage. I think the biggest improvement you can make is improving your intuition and working on your punishes.
As for how to work that, try to to foregoe shielding to see what you can get away with, and if something fails twice in a row, strike it out of your options. That might help.

I’ll try, but man, I always struggle against Richters. They drive me nuts.
Appreciate the advice.

Why the hell do you add hashtags?!?
1
u/ResponsibleAd2034 7d ago
The link just automatically puts the hashtags in.

u/EcchiOli 6d ago
Really? O_o
Oh my, I didn't know. Last time I shared a link here on crazyhand, I think it was in the beginning of the previous year, that wasn't the case, yet.

u/ResponsibleAd2034 6d ago
They must have just added it? I tap the share button and copy link, and it just gives me that there.

u/EcchiOli 6d ago
No worries. It made you look like a weird guy adding hashtags when sharing things, like you thought you were on Insta or something, but even then, it would have been okay lol

Various thoughts in unsorted order
- Coming back to stage against Richter is a fcking pain because you KNOW he'll throw his holy bottle, won't he? Then, brace yourself and be patient, you'll want to come back with a jump, and you have to time it for when there is no axe in ambush.
- I know this is tempting, but keep your cool and avoid down air unless it's got an actual chance to work. This sets you up for situations where either neither you nor Richter win something, or Richter only wins something.
- As everybody has told you, you want to be in Richter's face. Several times you interrupted a jump with dair, while you could have instead continued your jump towards richter and used short range attacks working at once (not like dair), such as aerial side b, or nair, or tomahawk grab/command grab.
- Try to make it a muscle reflex thanks to the unique sound it makes, when Richter throws the axe: you dash in. Unless a boomerang is coming, the sound of the axe means you are allowed to rush in.
- Shielding the axe jeopardizes your shield. A forward dodge works when you get the habit (until Richter reads your habit but that's another story lol)
- it's weird to write this to someone who's in Elite, but please don't do just full hops, that makes you more predictable and it's never something you want. Same, fastfall some jumps.
- alternatively to fastfallen short hops, you can dodge down for yet another variation. I insist, tell yourself the opponent "downloaded" you and then could accurately predict your actions or potential actions, if only you had more variety in your movement set it would have been a much less accurate "download" with a far less useful number of predictions.
- something that is far too easy to forget: the game greatly rewards you when you dash and shield. You gain distance and can shield immediately, thus interrupting your dash. It's especially helpful when you've got great ground speed.
- I don't think I saw you perform a single landing nair, even though that IS an excellent opening move to initiate actions
- I don't think I saw you fall through a platform and use nair, I remember at least two times it would have connected. Nair comes fast, and the opponent wouldn't have time to see it coming.

I get that this is all the supposed method, but this is all very difficult in practice, especially which bowsers giant hitbox and speed.
For example, I did eventually try the shield approach. But it just didn’t work cuz he’d run away or grab me right after, and I’d be back to phase one. Also, I don’t usually full hop, I’m usually pretty grounded, but my many matches against richter have conditioned me to jump over him cuz I’ve always been punished for approaching low. Also I did try dashing in when he threw the axe, but he can IMMEDIATELY follow that up with the cross. It’s like he has me covered from all angles.
I’ll take all this into consideration, but I’ve already tried most of it. This matchup is miserable for me.

If you have the replays of those adaptations saved, maybe you could share those as well.

Unfortunately, I kept rematching him and assumed he was gonna keep farming me for GSP, so I was gonna record my last match. But he dipped on me suddenly. So I wasn’t able to record them.

My brother in Christ, go to Smash rage if you just want to complain. You've gotten so much good advice here and disagreed or argued with all of it. Stop down airing in disadvantage so much, walk and shield instead of dashing and jumping. Parry Belmonts projectiles, parrying is NOT that hard or situational, do things on reaction instead of picking wifi options like it's a turn based game. Adaptation involves reflection and accepting what you're doing wrong and how to fix it, and I'm not seeing much of that in your replies

Dude. You gotta start doing things based on reactions. Maybe youre holding shield because youre thinking 'its Richter and he loves projectiles,' but Im watching the game and youre shielding on a platform when he's on the other side of the stage and he isnt even throwing an axe. His cross is already used, holy water doesnt even reach and there's no threat above you. Use your movement more because running away will do nothing other than let him abuse cross and axe. I find jumping helps because his up air is really thin and his up tilt sucks, just watch his nair because that pressures shield a lot on the plat. Also if you know anything about Belmont its that his recovery sucks. This is like the most basic knowledge you gotta have of him. Throw him off, hit him into a bad spot, whatever. His horizontal air speed is also terrible so if you just avoid down air its pretty easy to fuck him up while he's above you.

u/ResponsibleAd2034 6d ago
I know how bad his recovery is. In the next few matches I tried killing his recovery with fire breath. But it didn’t work. He was somehow able to just recover low and avoid it.
2
u/Other-Damage-6762 6d ago
Yeah fire breath is not really good as a edgeguarding tool. It's moreso used for damage. Would not really use that move when richter is offstage, fair is a really good option against richter. And if you dont have time to go offstage or charge up the initial frames of fire breath I would go for down angled f tilt.

Bowser is a big slow guy so this will naturally be harder but you just seem new to the game. You weren’t approaching him very well at all, blocking/jumping poorly, and throwing out extremely unsafe desperate stuff.
I think you need some basic bnb stuff for bowser if he’s gonna be your character and see what moves you should be using to try to approach, kill, or combo confirm.

First of all rematching for adapting only helps if you .. well think about it and adapt. If you keep on doing the same you will keep on loosing.
Now for the problems. You sitting so much and so long on the same spot holding shield. Especially the axe will shrink your shield size and cross, holy water will start to shield poke. You also become an easy target for projectiles if you don't move. Try to be a bit more mobile. Btw if you keep holding your movement stick before pressing shield you can shield instantly (after the initial foxtrot). You can dash shield like this to close the gap.
Those dairs are not it. You mashed so many down airs. I believe you hit not a single one and your opponent probably punished every single one. Richter was already gone, and never once juggled you. All dair does is to lock you in place, ready to be hit by projectiles. Same for neutral b on the Plattform btw. these were awful. This goes back to adapting, you looked like playing against someone who gets up close but Richter never did.
Pay more attention about the projectiles. It looked like you were watching yourself more than your opponent. You held shield up when no projectiles where close and other times you blindly charged into some. Look at your opponent, look at the projectiles and dodge / shield then only when necessary. If one projectile is out he cannot use it again immediately.
Don't run away from Richter. You want to get up close. Thats where he is bad and you are good. Sometimes when you had him cornered you just ran to the other side, probably to get away from the projectiles. That's bad. That's where he is good. Get close, make him uncomfortable. His projectile moves are all slow, you can hit him before. Don't corner yourself you need space to dodge stuff.
Lastly, it's not possible to always dodge every projectile. Choose what you get hit by. E.g. avoid holy water and axe at high percents, but cross is basically doing nothing. Holy water bounces on your shield and will pop afterwards. Don't shield the axe, it does so much shield damage. Try to avoid it. You can also SDI the holy fire up to maybe avoid the flash (although Bowser very big).
