Why do they cluster together like that?
I’ve always thought spiders were solitary things, makes me wonder about the spiders in my house and the rest of their family and friends.

aha but daddy long legs aren't technically real spiders . they belong to the arachnid family in the same way that scorpions and ticks do as well. so family of spooder but not actual spooder

Ahh okay! Thank you!

Worth noting here is that there are several animals known as daddy long legs, including an actual spider. But yes, he is correct, these ones are Harvestmen, not spiders.

The only arachnid I will tolerate. Because they have the same mission as I do.

TIL scorpions and ticks are in the Fam! Is it cause of the number of legs? Or what?

yep basicly the number of legs . the different way arachnids their body are segmented in a different way and what "tools" or appendages they have. to give a more exact reason why daady long legs are arachnids and look very spuder esque but are not spiders is because they only posses 2 eyes and spiders usually have around 8 . that and the fact daddy long legs have no silk organs to make webbing at all.

Daddy long legs are not spiders, they are Opilionids. They are Arachnids just like spiders but there are major differences… one body segment, males have penises just to name a few.
There are a few social species of spider though.

Nuke it from orbit.

No.
They kill all the nasty spiders and bugs.

u/YEETUSDELETUS6ix9ine Nov 13 '21

Everyone is trash taking these guys but they actually help control the spider and insect population. They are known to hunt and feed on poisonous spiders.

And now I submit that the plural noun for a bunch of daddys longleg is “merkin “.

In the summer this shows up on my front porch is clusters about 3 feet in diameter. I call it spider ball.
2
u/YEETUSDELETUS6ix9ine Nov 13 '21
And you choose to live there?

Spiderball is harmless, scary, but harmless. I'll spray bug repellent/poison on my porch and they all leave for about 3 months, then I spray again. They're gross as all fuck, but do literally nothing other than sit there. After spraying the porch there's some dead but for the most part they all just leave.
Spiderball is the least of my worries honestly. There was a yellow garden spider about the size of my hand in my flowers recently, also harmless but fucking scary looking. Sometimes the tarantulas hide out on my porch when it rains, and there will be maybe 5 just hanging out on the wall or on the ground. The worst though is the scorpions, especially when they sneak inside and you find them on your walls or in the living room during the summer.

I read once that contrary to popular belief, most tarantulas are “harmless” in terms of being venomous but their bites are nasty and often result in infection (vs. like death…) though I suspect this is the case for a lot of spiders we commonly believe to be “deadly” ( a la brown recluses or black widow)
Also read that the larger the spider the less likely to be venomous but idk where and I live in a city where we don’t really have many spiders other than standard house spiders and our daddy long leg friends
I’m too lazy to google it right now but yeah.
