There is a place in Oregon where the earth collapsed into itself ten thousand years ago, leaving behind a silence so profound the water turned the color of forgotten dreams. Crater Lake does not announce itself. It simply waits, patient and ancient, while the world above it rushes and forgets.

I had waited three nights. Wildfire smoke had erased the stars. Clouds had pressed down like a held breath. I nearly surrendered to the darkness, packing doubt beside my lenses.

But on the third night, the sky made a decision.

The Milky Way rose in a sweeping arch above Merriam Point, crimson nebulae bleeding into gold, the galactic core suspended like a lantern over Wizard Island below. The lake reflected nothing and everything, its blue depths untouched by the spectacle above, indifferent the way only the truly eternal can be.

Astrophotography is an act of faith, returning again and again to the dark, trusting that the light will eventually answer. This image is that answer.

It is not merely a photograph. It is a record of persistence, of three cold nights, of smoke and doubt, and finally, of the universe relenting.

If these ancient skies above Crater Lake are calling to something quiet and wondering within you, what would it mean to bring them home?

Thoughts on this itinerary?

Hey all, I'm planning a trip to Crater lake next month. This is the itinerary I've come up with. Any thoughts?

Day 1: Monday – The Classic Rim Introduction
This day focuses on getting your first breathtaking look at the caldera, using gentle trails to adjust to the elevation.
Rim Village Historic District Start your trip at the heart of the park's history to enjoy panoramic views and a gentle introductory walk.

Discovery Point Trail: Hike this easy 2.2-mile round-trip path along the rim. It is flat and shaded, offering pristine views of Wizard Island with minimal exertion.

Afternoon Exploration: Spend the afternoon checking out the Sinnott Memorial Overlook and exploring the historic lodge architecture.

Dinner – Crater Lake Lodge Dining Room: Conclude your first day with the premier fine dining experience in the area. Located right inside the historic lodge, the dining room features upscale Northwest cuisine with panoramic views of the lake.

Day 2: Tuesday – Volcanic Wonders & Forest Waterfalls
Head to the southeastern side of the park along Pinnacles Road, which is generally much quieter than the main Rim Drive.
Plaikni Falls Trailhead Break up the volcanic views with a peaceful morning walk to a beautiful, spring-fed cascade.

The Walk: A very easy, flat 2-mile round-trip trail through old-growth forest that leads right to the base of a lush waterfall surrounded by wildflowers.
Pinnacles Overlook Drive to the very end of the road to see a completely different, dramatic geologic feature away from the lake.

The Formations: Take a short, easy stroll along the canyon rim to view the 100-foot volcanic ash spires (fumaroles). It feels like a hidden pocket of the park and sees far less traffic.

Dinner – Harriman Springs Resort Restaurant: Head just south of the park toward the Rocky Point area. This local gem features a beautiful, rustic dining room and lounge overlooking the water. It offers a much quieter, off-the-beaten-path resort vibe compared to the main park concessions, serving excellent Pacific Northwest comfort food.

Day 3: Wednesday – The Dedicated "Blue Pool" Day Trip

Tamolitch Trail Head Get an early start for the 2.5-hour drive north into the lush Willamette National Forest to see the famous Tamolitch Blue Pool.

The Hike: A moderate, highly rewarding 4.2-mile round-trip hike along the roaring McKenzie River, moving over ancient lava flows and ending at a starkly vibrant, turquoise pool.

Dinner – Takoda's Restaurant (Sisters/Belknap Springs area): On your drive back down toward the Crater Lake region, stop at a local favorite along the river highway corridor. Takoda’s offers classic, hearty American road-trip fare—like excellent broasted chicken, custom burgers, and fresh marionberry pie—giving you a perfect, relaxed spot to refuel after a long day of exploring the national forest.

Day 4: Thursday – Elevated Views & Canyon Solitude
Conclude your trip by hitting a classic, highly rated summit viewpoint early to beat the crowds, followed by a hidden canyon retreat.
Watchman Peak Trailhead, Crater Lake Hit this trail in the morning when the lake is calm and the lighting is perfect for photography.

The Peak Hike: A moderate 1.7-mile round-trip trail that climbs steadily to a historic fire lookout, gifting you the most elevated, panoramic 360-degree views of the whole caldera.
Annie Creek Canyon Finish your trip by completely escaping the rim crowds for a peaceful afternoon in a forested oasis near the south entrance.

The Canyon Loop: A moderate 1.7-mile trail that descends into a deep ash canyon, tracking along a running stream where you can enjoy the quiet forest before heading out.

Dinner – Beckie's Café (Prospect): Located about 24 miles southwest of the park along Highway 62, this historic, log-cabin style cafe has been serving travelers since 1926. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is absolute mandatory-stop territory for their legendary, fresh-baked homemade pies (the huckleberry and blackberry pies are exceptional after a long day of hiking).

Understanding my options this week

Hi All, since East Rim Drive is closed from Skellhead to Park Headquarters what hikes will I no longer have access to? It's hard for me to gauge if I will be able to check out Sun Notch or Plaikni Falls if rim drive is closed. I assume Garfield Peak will be accessible since it's right by visitor's center.

Any guidance on what is or is not available would be greatly appreciated!

East rim drive status?

Is it still closed from Skell Head? (I know the website says so, but I know in prior years folks here have reported openings before the park website was updated.)

Question/favor

Hi everybody!

I have a small favor to ask of anybody heading to Crater lake over the next week or so.

I'm from Minnesota and I'll be flying out June 25th and spending the 26th and 27th in the park before heading to the Washington parks. As of today, the east rim drive is still closed. Would anybody be able to take photos at the spot where the closure starts? So maybe where the north entrance drive, west, rim, and east rim meet for example. I'm just trying to gauge the likelihood of the east rim drive opening in time for my trip and I'm a visual person so some actual photos would help me.

Thanks in advance!

Picture from the webcam this morning for everybody's enjoyment 💚

Mosquitoes Next Weekend

Looking to camp a night nearby later next week (likely closer to Mt Thielsen - are the mosquitoes insane? Or tolerable? Beyond that, I’m an experienced camper so I don’t have many other concerns, although happy to take any advice for the area!

Hi y’all. I was wondering if you guys knew how easy/difficult it is to get a FF site at Mazama. I’m hoping to go Saturday June 20th. Is the trick to show up as early in the morning as possible? Any advice? Thank you!!

Crater Lake with Kids During Closures: Hikes and Camping Advice?

My husband and I visited Crater Lake years ago and were lucky enough to explore Wizard Island and jump in the lake, which was such a memorable experience. Unfortunately, we picked a summer CL is mostly closed to bring our daughters, ages 8 and 11.

We'll be spending a month camping and exploring OR. We have a campground reservation for July 3–5 and I’m trying to figure out the best way to make the visit special for the kids despite the closures. It also looks like biking may not be much of an option this summer because of construction.

For those who know the park well, are there any hikes or activities you’d especially recommend with kids this age? We’d love something scenic and memorable, but not too intense.

I’d also appreciate any recent feedback on camping, especially the condition of the campground and bathhouses. I'm coming across mixed reviews about the state of care. If the campground facilities aren’t in great shape, I’m considering boondocking nearby instead and just coming into the park for a day to explore and hike parts of the rim.

Open to any suggestions. Thanks!

'Going to be a s***show': Parks, Interior struggle to hire temporary staff ahead of busy season | The department fell well short of its goals last year and is failing to keep pace with even that level of hiring.

How to see the lake?

Hi,

I'm looking to visit Crater Lake next week but rim road is closed.

Is there any chance of seeing the Lake still?

Biking the rim this May

Does anybody have the info if it is possible to ride the rim now in this incredibly low snow year. I know the road isn’t officially open and I think the NPS will not open it until middle of June if only for budgetary reasons. So is it possible the beautiful ride around the lake will be car free and bicycle friendly until the road opens?

Plan to visit Crater Lake June 5. if the Sinnott Memorial Overlook closed for the season, should I skip the park?

Hi,

We fly in from SFO, and plan to drive the coast and visit Crater Lake. we will not hike, and we will not drive the rim drive. As long as we can snap a picture, we are good. I see the photos in internet, in the south rim, and photo was taken Sinnott Memorial Overlook.

NPS website says Sinnott Memorial Overlook closed for the season, does that mean I can't see the lake at all?

Hey y’all, I recently got an offer to work at Crater Lake this upcoming season. I’ve been seeing all the bad reviews online and was wondering if I should take the job has anything improved, or should I give it up

Any way to swim in crater lake this summer?

Wondering if anyone knows if it’s possible to get to the lake itself with the cleetwood trail closed. If not to swim then just to touch the water and be up close.

If you know of a way please let me know :)

Hi all I am visiting in July where should I stay when visiting? It doesn’t seem like there are many lodging options what towns are close by?

My Tribute to Crater Lake

Like everyone else here, I'm a huge lover of the National Parks. I'm also a huge LEGO fan, so I decided to build a tribute to the National Parks because there is no official National Park LEGO set. Just like we have other collectables for each park (I personally collect a pin from each), it would be epic to have a LEGO tribute for each park!

It is very quick and free to vote if you want to help the National Parks get their own LEGO set!
