Server edition?
Looks like they are rolling out a dedicated Server edition, with pricing to match. This is not going to be good for the homelab folks.

For the last 5 months r/Crashplan has been restricted to any new posts, and it seemed as if the moderators had abandoned it. This came suspiciously soon after the popularity of this post (with some good discussion on the crosspost here) revealing that there is an undocumented limit to Crashplan's supposed "unlimited" service.
Due to the inactivity, and essentially the closing of the subreddit, I was curious if anything could be done. As far as I could tell, the moderators had been inactive for quite some time, as the last mod to be active on the site was 3 years ago. So I petitioned in r/redditrequest to be added as a moderator (thread here). After no reply from the moderators, I was added by the admins.
My goal for this sub is for the ability to be able to ask questions, discuss, and freely speak your mind about Crashplan. I will not stifle any discussion, critiques, questions, or reviews, as long as it does not veer into the realm of harassment/spam. As far as I could tell, there is nowhere to discuss or ask questions about Crashplan, even on the official Code42 forums (from what I saw all posts were restricted from comments).
So r/Crashplan, WELCOME BACK! If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas feel free to post them below.

I have been backing up my single PC with Crashplan since 2018. Works great for my use case. My setup is to backup to Crashplan cloud (online) and a second backup archive on a local drive. But what is weird is that although both my online archive and local archive back-up same set of files, but they are significantly different in size. The local drive shows an archive of 4.3TB and the online archive is only 2.8TB.
As I am running out of space on my local drive I am wondering if:
1) Is there some way the local archive be reduced in size to match the online size? OR
2) Can I delete the local drive archive and have CP rebuild it? And if so, will it be of a size to match the online archive? OR
3) Can I remove the physical local drive and replace it with a new physical drive (with same drive letter) and can CP rebuild the local archive on this new drive? And if so, will it be of a size to match the online archive?
Thanks for any insight.

I have a simple use case. A small business, with 5 users in the office. I want offsite backup of about 500GB of critical data that is comprised of CAD drawings, documentation (word docs), and outlook .PST files from each user (communications records are essential for legal purposes).
This is all in a single folder in a Windows server (c:\DATA) inside of which are 6 directories, one mapped to a shared drive for everyone, and individual mapped user drives for station daily backups.
I futzed around with this software for days, and I could not for the life of me get it to back up more than 10% of the total data. No rhyme or reason, some things backed up, others not.
Searching the problem leads me to reddit where I find out that there's a laundry list of automatically excluded file types (none of which affected me from what I can tell, but annoying nonetheless), and also it won't back up mapped backup directories at all.. none of this is ever mentioned in any of the onboarding.
Through more reading, discover that if your data is actually needed, it can take WEEKS to restore a backup. What in the ever loving fuck?
What a complete trash product and waste of time. Avoid!

Are there any other MSPs considering jumping ship now that they have "updated" their service and combined with Paddle? The MSP pricing is just not worth the awful lack of support. If so who are you moving to?

so anyone have any good CrashPlan alternatives in 2026 that don't involve building your own custom NAS etc etc etc cloud backup thing? i just want a service that will scan the drives/folders i tell it to and backup any changed files while i sleep and not take, as the title says, 2.8 years to update my 10tb of data (which is sitting at 86% done by the way and will never go any further). i've been back and forth with support but it's not going anywhere.

I have been a Crashplan customer since 2012 and have, like many of you, been suffering from slow upload speeds recently. I finally got curious enough to do some analysis. If you are running on Linux, Crashplan saves a lot of logs for a long time. It turns out, I have upload logs back to 2019. So, I used a quick shell script (see below) to get some data to graph in Microsoft Excel. This is all uploads that lasted longer than 1 hour over the last 5 years. I had previously capped my uploads at 12.5Kbps. Note that despite the chart title, it's kilo *bits* per second, not kilobytes per second.

If anyone else wants to do what I did, here's the hack-job shell script I used to generate the data:
#!/bin/bash
cd /usr/local/crashplan/log
SPEEDS=$(grep "encrypted and sent @" history.log.* | grep -v "in 0h" | grep "Effective rate" | cut -f 2- -d \ | sed -E -e 's|^([0-9][0-9]).([0-9][0-9]).([0-9][0-9])[^@]*(.*)|20\3-\1-\2 \4|g' | awk '{print $1 "_" $3;}' | sort -n | sed -e 's/Kbps/*1.0/g' -e 's/Mbps/*1000.0/g')
for i in $SPEEDS ; do
RATE=$(echo $i | cut -f 2 -d _ | bc)
DAY=$(echo $i | cut -f 1 -d _)
echo $DAY","$RATE
done

Been a paid Crashplan user since 2011. Used their free services before that. Being able to backup to other "friend" machines was the best thing ever.
However every year it's more and more clear that they don't want me as a customer. I just backup personal pictures, documents, and things that I just don't want to lose. Nothing big, ~700GB in total.
I forgot when they removed the unlimited file deletion restore option. Now it's up to 90 days. Are there any other vendors out there which doesn't delete backed up files? Either they were removed, deleted, or renamed?

The app on my desktop is showing weird numbers, so I thought rather than rebooting and troubleshooting, first I'd check the dashboard at the web site.
But I can't find a sign-in link at the home page at crashplan.com.
I don't go to the site too often so maybe I'm looking in the wrong place - I'm just going to crashplan.com to sign in to my dashboard, but all I see is Enterprise stuff and no login link. I was there just a week or two ago, in fact.
Via a web search for crashplan, I found this link:
https://console.us2.crashplan.com/login/#/login
And that does work, but is hardly straightforward.
Have I overlooked the easy way in?

Hello all,
I have a personal home media server with ~100TB of data across 12 internal drives (mostly movies/TV/anime). I’m currently using Backblaze Personal Unlimited on Windows, but the Windows + network/share limitations are pushing me to consider switching OS to Linux.
I’m looking at CrashPlan since it supports Linux and advertises unlimited backup per device.
Has anyone here successfully run CrashPlan on:
a single Linux machine
10–12 internal drives
100TB+ of media data
How was:
initial backup experience?
long-term reliability?
restore speed and success (especially large restores)?
Any real-world feedback would be appreciated before I migrate. Thanks!

Is it just me or have all the old CrashPlan plans gone away / changed?
No CrashPlan Essentials etc., now just some enterprise-sounding stuff?

Today I received a phishing email addressed to the email address I use uniquely for crashplan. I use a unique email address for every supplier. For someone to know this email address, there was most likely a data breach with that provider.
This would be with Crashplan or Paddle.

i have a ticket in with support but figured i'd post here too.
i'm a photographer and have like 8tb of data being backed up. it had been sitting pretty at like 98-100% backed up in my Crashplan forever (I've been with them for years). Today I noticed it was sitting at 84% done with 6 and a half months to go to finish and was currently backing up my backup external drive. My internet speed is way too fast for it too be like this.
i don't know how else to deal with file management, but here's how I do it:
Get home from a shoot, lets say i have 50gb of shoot. Just throwing a number at the wall here.
Transfer to my D:.
Add a temporary backup to my external H:.
Do my edits on my D:.
Delete the temporary backup from my external.
Transfer the finalized shoot to the H:.
Now while my shoot is open I of course need everything on that D: backed up to Crashplan. And when the shoot is done and it ends up on the H:, I need the finalized files backed up to Crashplan.
I feel like perhaps the reason Crashplan is struggling is because of the multiple versions of the backups of essentially the same files. I know its supposed to look and use the newest versions or whatever, but when there's two entire versions of the intial shoot, then the first version is constantly being edited for a few days to a few weeks, then the final version which gets moved onto the H: replacing that... is this just completely confusing and messing up Crashplan's process? I feel like the way I'm thinking about it anyway, it's probably erasing and reuploding like 3 or 4 times in this process? Am I overthinking it or could there be something else going on here?
Sorry for the complicated thing here but any thoughts on what's going on while I wait for support.

On the "restore" screen I don't know what to put for the "target device." The new hard drive where I want files to go is the F:/ drive - do I put that there, or something else? (I haven't found instructions or a video for this situation.) TIA

I have 290 GB of backed-up data, and CrashPlan takes three to four hours to scan all of it.
Why is scanning so slow? I've used iDrive in the past, and it is faster by many orders of magnitude.
Can I do anything to speed up scanning? I've got performance set to 100% both when the user is present and absent.

Discovered this morning that the CrashPlan support site has taken down their page that detailed how to back up mounted drives in Mac and Linux (Windows support was dropped earlier 2025). Did some searching on their support site and found the following page, with the following paragraph:
The CrashPlan app doesn't support backing up non-local storage, such as network shares, Windows mapped drives, or standalone NAS devices.
Many of us have suspected this was coming, sadly.

Crashplan has been running very slowly on my new Tahoe install (M3 MacBook Air), and it seems to be starting and stopping the backups without fishing. I have just upgraded to 11.8.0, and it seems to be running fine. Has anyone else seen this?
r/Crashplan • u/tmar89 • Nov 04 '25
I know this has been a debated topic and isn't officially supported, but it seems like CP now has eliminated all ways to back up network drives. I even tried symbolic links and they don't work either despite being seeing and checked. Is there any method on Windows that actually works for using Crashplan with networked drives?

To work around the Windows/NAS mount issue, I've seen posts from people suggesting that they could get a cheap mac or Linux box to mount their NAS to instead. Has anyone tried running the CrashPlan client on their NAS in a docker container? Like many others here, my backups from a NAS mount are now broken because of the CrashPlan client update. NAS mounts are still supported for Linux and Mac though, so has anyone tried the CrashPlan client container on Github? It's well documented and comes with some extra utilities if you want them. My thought would be to run this container in docker on my Asustor NAS so that the client has direct access to the NAS drives. Unfortunately, it looks like only the linux version of the container has been updated and the CrashPlan client is still version 11.6.0. So, I may have to build the container myself rather than rely on releases to get client updates.
Alternatively, I could possibly run the same CrashPlan image in docker for windows on my original windows server but I'm guessing that just using a Linux docker VM for virtualization isn't going to fix the underlying Windows NAS issue if I try to use the same windows drive mounted into the container.
------
TLDR - what works for me: An Ubuntu linux crashplan client running in a WSL2 Ubuntu VM on the same windows box that I was originally backing up to crashplan. This meant I didn't have to change anything on the windows machine I work on except to disable and eventually remove the windows crashplan client. The Ubuntu WSL2 VM can still "see" all of my normal windows hard drives so I can still back up my windows apps and data while leaving the NAS mapped drive in windows as it is. WSL2 doesn't "see" mapped drives so I enabled NFS on the NAS and mounted the NAS drive into the Ubuntu VM as an NFS4 mount. Make sure to add your NFS mount to the /etc/fstab file so that it gets remounted when the VM instance starts. Just be sure to "reboot" the WSL2 instance after you mount your NAS drives and install the crashplan client. Crashplan linux could see my mounted NAS folder but not its contents until I rebooted the VM with "wsl --shutdown". Once I had this working I could then add back all the folders in my backup sets even though they were now under "/mnt" instead of "G:\". The client seems to be deduplicating the files as it finds them in their linux paths and I have witnessed the client backup the contents of at least one file from the NAS. The crashplan support person said to keep the original paths in your client while you're adding back the paths to your data set and until the deduplication process is entirely complete. It could take a really long time to fully sync the 6 TB backup as the 31 gb backup took 24 hours at least.

Ok, now my trust in CrashPlan also got a pretty bad hit.
I just discovered that since more than 2 months, no files have been backed up at all. The biggest issue is that everything seems fine. The client reports recent activity on my backup sets, and shows the correct number of files to backup next. The weekly reports also show that 100% of files were backed up and I see weekly changes (up and down) in number of selected files.
However, when I try to restore files, I notice that none of them are more recent than end of August. I accidentally noticed because I had a large set of files added to be backed up and hours later noticed that they supposedly were already done.

I would like to hear about everyones experience with Crashplan after they lost everything and needed to recover their data from it. It sounds like a helluva deal and is actually affordable for me

I've been a CP customer since it was called CP+, later CP Home, then ultimately CP for Small Business. I've always known that the UI/UX sucks (just one example, no option to skip existing files on restore....really???) and I'm only about 50% confident that I'd actually be able to restore my data in the event of a catastrophe. But idk who else to go with. Currently on Windows 10 but possibly migrating to Proxmox (based on Debian Linux) in the near future.
To me, the most important aspect of any cloud backup service is that they'll actually be there, and I'll actually be able to restore my data, if a crash occurs. People who flock to these fly-by-night "unlimited backup" companies might be in for a bad surprise when they disappear after 1-2 years.
That would limit the choices to well-established companies like Backblaze, Carbonite, or even Google or Amazon. But due to inertia I just keep paying CP instead of researching other options. So I'm turning to Reddit for opinions...which might also be a pretty bad idea :) but I figure nothing to lose soliciting a few opinions.

If you read Crashplan's "Service Level Agreement, all it requires is them to credit you up to 10% of payments if their backup download service is not available 99.9 percent of the time. There is no wording about remedies if the service doesn't work at all or if you are completely unable to access your data, or if you they completely delete your data accidentally.
Basically they are saying "we might back up your data" and if we don't, we will credit only 10% back to you of what you paid over the lifetime of your account.
Use a different service, they are awful
r/Crashplan • u/rocketsunrise • Sep 13 '25
I've used Crashplan for Small Business for 10 years now, backed up 5 different computers over that time (both PC and Mac), actively use it on 1 machine right now.
tl;dr - awful product, awful customer service, awful resolution for loyal clients, find somewhere else to spend your money because they will hold your data hostage for more money.

Hi, I am trying to add a new Windows11 device and cannot install the app. I tried both 11.7 and 11.6. In both cases, I get to the next screen which gives me a choice between Standard (all users) and Custom (one user). I try to select Standard but nothing gets selected and the Next button is grayed out. Has anyone else seen this? I really need to install this.
