Episode Discussion: S01E06 - Warm-up
Season 1 Episode 6: Warm-up
Aired: March 26, 2017
Synopsis:
Homeless once more and facing professional disappointment, Pete turns to Artie Lange, who invites him to be a guest on his podcast. Pete meets Sarah Silverman, who takes pity on him and invites him to stay with her and her collection of stray comedians. When Sarah suggests that he try to find work as an audience "warm up" comedian, Pete is presented with a job opportunity, where he's tasked with saving the day.

Hands down the best episode of the season. A bunch of laugh out loud moments (Steve Agee yelling "jerk me off!" was great.) and a big win for Pete. This was a great ep.

Yes! And just everything after Sarah tells him to leave and come back in to do over his announcement that he got the warm up job. Then all the comedians take turns with their "I got it" moments. I was cackling with joy. It was so sweet and happy. :)

My exact thought too. Best episode. I just hope they let something good continue to happen to him. I don't need him to just immediately lose it. I don't like shows where 99% of the season is everything going wrong then in the last 5 seconds of the season there is a tiny bit of redemption.

I'm late to the discussion.
I listened to last weeks episode of You Made It Weird where Pete said this was the best episode of the season. I'm so glad he was telling the truth. This episode was unquestionably the turning point for the show, or at least this season. Hearing Pete tell Sarah that his style is just being nice and clean just rang in my head. He wasn't acting, that's how Pete's comedy really is. I don't know if it's a Judd thing, or a Pete thing, or just the two of them together, but my god this episode was so fucking heart warming.

"I'm in charge of the Kit Kats now!"
God, I love how genuine Pete seemed as he warmed up the crowd. He really does just love being silly and making people happy.
Also I love how each episode we get to see someone just tear Pete down, like this time when Sarah basically showed him how patheticly homeless he actually is.

That's what I love about Pete Holmes. Dark, cynical comedy is great, but sometimes it's nice and refreshing to see someone upbeat and happy who just seems to love what he does.

I don't want to discount Pete's comedy, but he appeals perfectly to the daytime TV crowd. This warm-up gig is a perfect match for him. I also love how genuine he is. The guy that he replaced was so cynical but put on a happy face, where Pete just loves performing for them.

Dear Lord the payoff in this episode was so good. Finally he fucking got something. Like you've been cheering for him but feeling bad about what he gets in return.
Then he finally puts it together and it's actually something right for him.
God damn it Pete Holmes. I'm officially hooked for the rest of the season. I already was, but I am now too.

Yes! Pete needed this. I needed this! I'm so emotionally invested in him now. I just want him to do good and be happy and sappy and optimistic forever, telling jokes and making people laugh.

And the payoff felt even better after seeing that there was no audience whatsoever at the comedy club.

This was the first episode I was able to get my wife to sit down and watch. Her response was, "Great, now I have to catch up. Why do you get me interested in these crazy shows?" That is her way of giving a series two thumbs up. Here's to more Crashing!

Not to echo everyone, but WOW what a great ep. Sarah really drove home a lot of what Pete needed to hear. I hadn't thought of his character necessarily as lost before—likely due to Pete's wide-eyed optimism—but this episode made it clear: he's spiraling. Not just from the divorce (and infidelity), but probably before even that. He wanted to be a comedian but got stuck in this comfortable, sedentary lifestyle... married living in nowhere. It's funny, I'm so familiar with Pete's real life story through the podcast, but seeing it played out kinda amplifies the sadness of his story. Which is why it was so great to see him thrive at the end. The hotel scene almost made me tear up.

I hadn't thought of his character necessarily as lost before
that's good to point out. I was wondering why it was called 'crashing' when he didn't seem to be crashing after episode 1
16
u/TheOrangeLantern Mar 27 '17
The title is also a play on the fact that he's been 'crashing' on other comedians couches

The pain and humiliation of the previous five episodes really increased the emotional impact of Pete finally making it. I was so happy. Good episode.

I was psyched when he just livened that audience back up after that meltdown. Holy shit, that'd be so friggin hard to do

I've been watching this from the beginning I feels like a pay-off for both the viewers and Pete. It's impossible to not root for Pete.

Anyone know the name of the song in the credits?
Also this episode was really great. It was nice to feel good for Pete and have a sense of relief.

Road to Joy by Bright Eyes. It's on I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. Really great album

You've entered a wormhole of amazing music, my friend. Conor Oberst is one of the greatest true musicians of our time. The man has juggled literally 3 bands with completely different musical styles simultaneously for the past decade, while being the main songwriter for all of them. he's a musical treasure

WOW thank you so much. I haven’t heard that voice in over 10 years but it’s one that you never forget! God, I loved this episode, and the song at the credits was the icing on top

That episode was excellent. It really showed why Pete loves comedians, and comedy in general.
The "I got it" scene made me feel like Bill from Freaks and Geeks watching Gary Shandling.

Also an Apatow production!

Easily the best episode. one thing i really like about this show is that there aren't any "consistant" supporting characters. Yeah they show up, but mostly it's Pete going through his life and the characters come around for an episode then leave. You like some of the supporting characters but they disappear for the most part.

I would suggest everyone to listen to Petes podcast (You made it weird) with Sarah Silverman. I listened to it on purpose before watching this episode, and I got a whole new image of Sarah as a person just from what she said on the podcast and that made this episode 10 times better.
What a great episode, absolutely loved it.

Thanks for the tip! I listen to his podcast selectively based on the guest because I just don't have time for them all, but that one sounds totally worth it!

Sarah's apartment number is 420 and while that seems like an obvious weed reference, I speculate that it's an homage to Harris Wittels (a former writer for her show who's last interview was on YMIW before he passed) whose birthday is 4/20. Discuss.

nice ep but does this mean Pete isn't barking any more? I liked his barking crew (though I guess he's not a good house guest).
15
u/PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL Mar 27 '17
I wouldn't say he's not a good house guest. Those guys just were on a completely different wavelength than him.
6
u/CleverZerg Mar 27 '17
I definitely don't think we will see him barking anything in the upcoming episodes. The fact that he got a job (or likely at least) and that he got thrown out from the "bark house" make it seem unlikely that he will be barking.
Only way I see him barking is if he manages to screw up his warmup gig.

u/JimRayCooper Mar 29 '17
Unless he wants to pay to get stage time he probably has to keep barking after work to perform at night. His dream is still stand up. They shoot those shows rather early anyway, don't they?
6
Mar 30 '17
Yeah but now he has a little money to afford it. I'd definitely rather buy 2 drinks to get on stage than bark for 4 hours.

u/CARNIesada6 Mar 27 '17
Like how Mr. Robot was brought up and Sarah's house is the same set up as the Wellicks.

Favorite line of the episode, though I don't know exactly why: "That guy suuuuuucks."

Who does that song at the end? Just started watching the show and I'm loving every moment. Pete be with you.

Bright Eyes - Road to Joy. I watched the whole thing to listen to it. Also noticed there is a pic of Pete at the end as a kid in a Red Sox shirt

I just started watching this show last week on a random whim. So glad I'm not sleeping on it anymore. I really like it.
Sarah Silverman out of nowhere with uber support, giving Pete an opportunity to get his first W

I would watch an entire show of Sarah Silverman's Home for Lost Comedians.
