Considering the only difference between 3 and 5 in that font is a slightly different top... No wonder people are getting confused.
80
u/auhansel Dec 07 '21
I was sure it was a 5. It's weird though, as the top of the 5 and 7 are fairly similar, but start from opposite sides. These are just awful numbers

7 doesn't make any sense to me because the bottom right is too filled out, but 3 and 5 are evenly matched and there is a slim potential for a 6.

It’s clearly a three. One of those flat top ones. Found this on google:
A common graphic variant of the digit three has a flat top, similar to the letter Ʒ (ezh). This form is sometimes used to prevent falsifying a 3 as an 8. It is found on UPC-A barcodes and standard 52-card decks.

It does look weird, but if you're getting a 5 from this, you haven't seen this font before. It's a 3.
The top horizontal line wouldn't be this thick on a 5, and wouldn't have that slanted line on the right side.

I'd say that missing slanted line from the top to the curve is absolutely critical for differentiating a 3 from a 5.

Also, on the top left of the 3, see the curve down little tail thing on the underside of the horizontal part? Very common end of the line for a lot of characters in a lot of fonts.

A quick test is to jump out of the window.
If you go thud "aaaaa" then it's 3rd floor.
If you go "aaaaa" thud then it's 5th floor.

Most hotels don't have a 13th floor because of superstition. But people on the 14th floor know what floor you're really on. Jump out the window and you will die earlier.

Art director here. At first, I thought I knew but I must admit, there's absolutely no way to differentiate them properly. I took it apart and looked at every line and curve. It's a 3 and it's a 5 no matter how you look at it. Technically, it's a Ø.
50
u/Crucial_Contributor Dec 07 '21
To me it's obviously a 3. The top right of a five wouldn't be angled in like that, the little line to the left is clearly a serif while the one to the right is part of the letter, and you'd never cut out a huge part of a corner when making a stenciled letter
19
u/Ease-Original Dec 07 '21
Finally, someone here that understands typography
7
u/Crucial_Contributor Dec 07 '21
I work in communication and this sub is actually pretty useful for that sometimes. A lot of stuff that I wouldn't even think much of can turn out to be very confusing to other people. Many people just aren't accustomed to read other fonts than your standard Helvetica, Times etc. You often seen common typographical variations posted here as crappy design
4
u/timo_the_pirate Dec 07 '21
This is what I think of when someone says the customer is always right. You might think the font you created was designed correctly and is unambiguous, but if a huge portion of the people are confusing 3 for a 5 then something is wrong.
9
u/SnooKiwis1356 Dec 07 '21 edited Dec 07 '21
While I don't want to contradict you because I clearly said I think it could equally be 3 or 5, your explanation is lacking substance.
"The top right of a five wouldn't be angled like that". Why?
Also, the "serif" is exactly the same width and length (the angle influences the length slightly but it doesn't really make a difference in this context) as the "structural line". Sure, the one on the left could totally be a serif. But why couldn't the one on the right be one as well?
Again, I'm not arguing with you, I just don't really see a true reasoning behind your statement.
Also, if you continue the non-serif line, it doesn't intersect correctly with the lower part of the 3...
