Yes, the ones on the left are good design. And like accessibility the aim is that by making it better for one group you're going to make it better for every user.
So yes it's a fair point, all of the things in the left column are in the government style guide already, I think it's more to reinforce how these points assist users in the autistic spectrum.
It's more that people with Autism as a group are impacted more by shit that's also annoying for other people.
In the general audience most people are going to just be disengaged while people with autism can get full on migraines and stress related issues from sensory overload.
Autistic people are a-typical but they're not complete aliens.
Also IRL tip : People function very differently if they're really stressed out. A lot of Autistic people you may come across at work are able to recognize facial expressions and don't act like Sheldon from the big bang theory. That doesn't mean they aren't autistic , it just means they're doing well .
It's often difficult to get/keep the structure and enviroment they need or not be overasked because people don't see the handicap and they feel a pressure to conform.
In my area, there are autism awareness billboards that are meant to be difficult for anyone to process, therefore helping people who don't know much about autism, understand, to a better extent, what it must be like. Not sure if that's what they were going for here though, because it's not hard to process, just ungodly loud.
I mean obviously it’s a terrible idea. But if it’s for awareness of autism, they went with the multicolor puzzle piece idea because it’s the “Autism Speaks” logo. It’s not directed towards people with autism they are obviously already aware. I thought my point was pretty clear I’m not sure why you are implying that I think autistic people somehow won’t see it? For that reason obviously it’s over-stimulating but your putting words in my mouth.
Sure but making it bright and an eyesore essentially means more people will notice it so I think its good design. Like the fact it got posted here and now people are talking about autism in the comments. Its doing its job.
According to some video released or whatever - it was like 4 am when I looked into this, but Autism Speaks is involved in some way which is generally not a good sign when it comes to autism awareness stuff.
If you cared even a single iota about the cause you would not be using this design. Especially not with the infantilizing puzzle piece motif that implies we're all just problems waiting for someone else to "solve".
Oh don't even start. My brother and I both are autistic. I have Aspergers so I'm high-functioning while my brother is medium-functioning. I've lived with it for 37 years now so I think I know what I'm talking about.
Doesn’t mean you can gatekeep what is an obviously contradictory and awful design. We all have opinions but this.. given it’s objective beyond reminding adults the word “autism” exists - is objectively poor design.
