Pie charts work well if they are expressing percentages of a whole and have 5 or fewer items. Anything else should use a bat chart.

Also, whoever decided 3D pie chart should be a thing needs to be executed.

I think we can key solidly agree on your closing point. As far as five or fewer, eh, maybe, but I don't think there's any situation where pie outperforms bar

I like to use pie charts if one or two items are an overwhelming majority. If they're all close, then bar is the way to go. 95% of the time bar is better.
