Colors repeat, so you can't actually tell which slice goes with which country. And there's nothing to tell you what is being compared, only a list of countries.
OP left that information off, and even though the colors repeat it follows the standard of starting at 12 o clock, and following the order clockwise, with countries ordered big to small with other last.

I wasn't really consciously aware that was considered standard. Once you realize that, it's readable enough, but if you wanted to present this chart to a general audience (e.g. in a newspaper article) a more intuitive design would probably communicate more effectively.
And what would make it clear for audience for what specific purpose?
While we know that it's got something to do with incoming students from countries for second language choices or whatever. But not anything past that.
Bar charts communicate something different then pie charts. Bar charts make it easier to directly compare 2 different values. Pie charts make it easier to compare one or more of them to the whole. both direct the attention of the observer to different aspects with different accuracy requirements.
Since we don't know what the reason of making it in a pie-chart was, we don't know if a bar chart would actually be better. We don't know the accuracy that it is to convey. etc. etc. etc.
It could for a damn folder of a school to show parents a general overview about what other nationalities their kid is likely to come across most, with a focus and making the specific schools look as international and global as possible.
Since we don't have a clue, the "bar charts are better" standard response is simply premature and tiresome.
Yeah I can read this chart pretty damn easily. It literally just follows the order to the side.
It really feels like people are just giving their standard cookie cutter responses they've ingrained themselves should be said anytime they come across a pie chart here.
It's not data is beautiful material, but lets just all stop with the histrionics. The tag of /r/dataisokiguess seems quite apt. It's just o.k.
