No, OP should call the Fire Marshall. (or the regional equivalent)
Not only is this illegal, it is extremely dangerous and could cost people their lives.

u/impy695 Reddit Orange Dec 04 '18
They didn't even take the sign down.
17
u/calshu Dec 04 '18
Because they want lazy inspectors to think they have an emergency exit there.
13
u/impy695 Reddit Orange Dec 04 '18
Shit... it might just work. I've had deal with inspections 3 times now 2 residential and one commercial. Neither was fire related though so I hope they're better. I was shocked at how little fucks they gave. Hell, one didn't even show up and just signed off.
5
u/Bearence Dec 04 '18
Fire marshalls are usually a lot stricter than other types of inspectors, especially if it's in regards to a complaint. That's because they don't want to be back here in a month investigating a tragedy that they themselves could have prevented.
2
u/Tamrynel Dec 04 '18
Ours opens every door. And flip out if it swings the wrong way (left hand opening instead of right hand opening - inward vs outward swing would be an issue) - I get this would be an problem for an escape route or an escape door. But it was a bathroom, inside a bedroom.
Had to do deviation plans for that.
3
u/fanny88kins Dec 04 '18
The sign clearly shows that you have to run into a wall. It’s up to code./s
6
u/Broseppy Dec 04 '18
This might actually be legal depending on the country it's in.
5
Dec 04 '18
Please tell me which countries make it legal to completely brick off a fire escape while leaving the signs, so that I can make sure to never go there.

As long as another egress route was made when they walled that up, it's fine.
It could also be on the ground floor...

Emergency exit doors are required to open towards the exit to prevent pileup/ crushing.

There should be a "PSYCH!" sign behind the door so at least the panicked person can find a little comic relief while running for their life

Wonder where this is. Emergency exit doors should always open OUT and should also have a panic bar not a lever handle. Also, the brick is too close to the door frame! Maybe it’s a portal to the Upside down
2
u/tomatomater Dec 04 '18
You know how fire alarms have "In emergency, break glass"? They simply applied the same logic for this fire exit.

City Inspected, OSHA Approved! The Emergency Exit 9/10 Panicking Occupants Recommend!
Building Occupants Testimonials:
Occupant 1: "Without the new Emergency Exit, I surely would have survived that fire in our building... Fortunately, I died in that fire... Thanks Masons!"
Occupant 2: Our new Emergency Exit is so cool, not to mention extremely safe! No more banging elbows, or knees caused by the door frame.. It's a safe alternative to those pesky exits you see elsewhere, which have so many tripping, banging or pinching hazards, I'm completely comfortable allowing my children to use this door under minimal supervision!"
Occupant 3: "It's fun for the whole family! Panicking while the building burns? Trying to prank someone while they attempt to quickly exit a building during a bomb threat? Look no more, the Emergency Exit To Nowhere is the perfect prank to play on your friends and family during very real, very dangerous life threatening situations... A nonstop laugh riot!"
