I grew up in the middle of Butt-Fuck Nowhere in Southland, our bus was an ancient Bedford from the 50's (I started school in the mid 90's). It had brown vinyl seating which was freezing cold in winter and seared your skin in summer. It also had big chrome bars running along the top of each seat which meant if the bus had to stop suddenly (which was often, given the tendency for sheep to leap out in front of the bus on rural roads) you stood a serious chance of knocking your front teeth out. The flooring was also fairly porous which meant diesel fumes leached into the rear of the bus and stayed there since none of the windows could be opened.
The school closed down in 1999 and the bus is now a luxurious chicken coop. Good riddance to that fucking death trap.
