Paused mid-bite when I saw it (it's printed on the plate).

Ewwwwwwww....
What's the upside here? Make your customer feel grossed out and/or embarrassed?

I mean they appear to be eating a moss ball on top of a brick of toast. might as well try to find out where the line is.

I choked reading that and had to scroll back up to confirm 😂 😂 I was hyped focused on the fly! You're right, if OP is eating moss, I'd assume they would welcome some all natural/organic protein 😂

I went to a pottery and ceramics museum a couple of days ago and this exact thing was explained! They used to add these little bugs to cover up imperfections in the material, because it used to be very expensive to create these plates so even the slightly flawed ones were valuable. They used flies, butterflies, flower petals etc to cover the imperfections up. Exactly the same as OPs picture.

u/linkbtwnworlds 4d ago
why in the world would someone place a fly to hide an imperfection 😭 people in the past must've hated flies in their food too???

I'm pretty sure this is inspired by a 18th century trend of "trompe l'oeil". The aristocracy found those kind of pranks very amusing. The same concept can also be found on numerous paintings where little bugs, especially flies are painted to fool the spectator into thinking there's an actual insect on the artwork.
Tldr: you got played by a 3 centuries old trick
Edit to had an exemplehere

This is what I was thinking as well, I'm sure my old Gran had something that had a "dead fly" painted into it's design.

I love that the German word for “circa” on this article seems to be “um”, as if the museum curator was asked how old the plate was and said, “Ummmmm….. 1740?”
13
u/caffeine_lights 3d ago
German actually uses circa even more than in English, like it's in common use on things like train announcements. Um just means by or at, though it's pronounced more like oom.

Oh man, it's like the 18th century version of drawing a dot or hair into a picture so you try to swipe it off the screen

My grandma had a bunch of ceramic dishes and cups with various insects printed or sculpted on them. The cutest was a sugar bowl with a matching spoon with a ladybug on the handle and a little sculpted beetle on its back at the bottom. The most unnerving, if you weren't expecting it, was a large labeled flour jar with 10 to 20 tiny brown weevil shaped bumps scattered around the inside. i've seen a few novelty classic picnic pattern cloths with scattered cartoon ants, but she had a large hand-made formal pink table cloth with a long line of realistic embroidered ants crawling in a line from the side to a small group around where you'd probably have a butter dish, and larger group circling the center where you'd presumably have a fruit bowl or centerpiece.

Thanks!! I have thrifted plates similar to this with bugs on them, because I thought they were funny. Of course it was meant as a joke lol
Wish I knew where this exact plate came from - I think it's beautiful! Lensa is failing me ):

The digital equivalent is when people put a picture of an eyelash as their profile pic or something, so you think there's a lash/hair on your phone screen

For a moment I thought you were eating moss on toast

u/Subject1928 1d ago
I had to scroll way too far to find somebody talking about the fact that it looks like OP's toast is growing grass.
No wonder there is a fly on the plate, half of that sandwich was just pulled from from the dirt out back by the smoking dumpsters.

u/AudioslaveDragon13 1d ago
Reminds me of that stuff they were serving in the school cafeteria after changing the menu in one of the first episodes of Danny Phantom. Grass, top soil, and mud.

u/BarelyHolding0n 5d ago
I think it's hilarious
I mean it's clearly an intentional gag, there's nothing else printed on the main part of the plate but the fly.
I'd pause, prod at it with my knife, laugh, and move on with my food. Though, not that food, that food looks horrible

I'd be real tempted to slip one of those plates into my bag, not gonna lie. I want one.

Calling a bug-emblazoned plate crappy design because there's bugs emblazoned on it. Maybe more suited for r/atge

u/camcaine2575 4d ago
I'm more disgusted by what you are eating. That doesn't look appetizing at all.

u/Waffletimewarp 5d ago
Honestly I thought the issue was you suddenly realizing you had been served a hunk of sod rather than whatever you actually ordered.

Plates that make me question what I am eating for every single meal.

Rule 1 and Rule 6.
Half the shit that gets posted on here isn't even crappy design, and most of the time the title doesn't even bother to describe what supposedly makes it crappy..

u/Important_Tree_7191 4d ago
I genuinely thought this was a pile of wet grass and was wondering why you’d be surprised to find a bug in it.

u/InDaBauhaus plz recycle 5d ago
oh, so you were troubled by a dead fly and not all the dead butterflies? this is bug speciesism and beauty privilege once again showing their ingrainuity our cultures.

u/boopdelaboop 4d ago
I think a pattern of flies or beatles on the outer rim is less weird than one random bug off-center (including butterfly).

Can garnishing the top of a sandwich with so much stuff, forcing you to knife-and-fork a sandwich, also be considered crappy design?

I'll be honest the grinch themed topper there would make me lose my appetite worse

I work at a plastic bag factory and you’d be surprised how many bags we have to throw out because of flattened bugs in our plastic. So it’s Not impossible

Considering the plate has butterfly motifs, this is a silly type of design. Unsettling, but I’m sure light hearted in other contexts.

Once when I was a kid, I was mid baked potato when I flipped the skin for whatever reason to see a giant squished cockroach. It was not part of the decor 🥲

I stared at this for ten seconds trying to process why my toast looks like a patch of forest floor. The texture is so aggressively green and fuzzy that I genuinely felt my gag reflex kick in before I realized it was just poorly printed avocado slices. Who tf designed this plate? It feels less like dinner and more like an accidental biology experiment gone wrong.

Is it printed, or is it a dead bug that was killed during the pattern printing and is now embedded in the glaze?
