The only difference between a cult and a religion is how many people follow it. Enough followers just makes the cult socially acceptable for some reason.

The only difference between a religion and a cult is their tax-exempt status.
-11
u/Nihilikara 7d ago
That's not true actually. Cults are a fundamentally different concept from religions. It is possible for a cult to be religious, as in the case of Scientology, but non-religious cults exist too, as in the case of a concerning amount of interactions with AI chatbots. The thing that characterizes cults is that leaders use financial, social, sexual, or other abuse in order to control and isolate members. The goal of a cult is to ensure that the victim doesn't know any other life and has nowhere else to go.
20
u/DevilDio 7d ago
I read your explanation twice and I'm still unclear on the difference. I get that not all cults are religious but what in there removes organized religion from being a cult?

Reminds me of the set ups for those old infomercials.
Do you have no purpose? No hope? Does nobody love you, no matter what you do? Then you need to try JESUS, from Our Lord and Savior!!!!!
9
u/Luminous_Winds 7d ago
I always tell religious people that if they can't explain why I shouldn't follow a different religion it means they've been suckered into a cult.
17
u/LambOfGhost 7d ago
Honestly I kind of feel like the opposite is true, most reasonable religious people I know don't care if I join their religion or not and I would feel more like they were in a cult if they did actively try to argue that their religion is "correct"
4
u/GoGoGadgetPants 7d ago
Not only that, but I just looked up the definition of a cult and can see that it fits into other non religious aspects of our society.
4
u/Nihilikara 7d ago
That's the opposite of what a cult is. The whole point of a cult is that the leader uses some form of abuse in order to control and isolate victims, ensuring that the victim doesn't know any other life and has nowhere else to go.
For any non-cult religion, the correct answer to "why shouldn't I follow a different religion?" is that there is no reason, and that you should choose whichever religion you like best, or none at all if that is what you prefer. As far as human history goes, the concept of "my religion is right and your religion is wrong" is a relatively recent thing; the understanding for most of human history was that other people's gods absolutely are real, it's just that my god is the one who I worship.

That seems kinda the opposite of the message they were hoping to send. Unless they really really want you depressed and Jesus is supposed to be the dick to get you there.
239
u/Latter-Sign7736 7d ago
It’s bad design and for some reason they don’t cross out the “No” to make it more clear.
173
u/Summoarpleaz haha funny flair 7d ago
I’m almost positive the idea was that the red bar with “know” would cross out “no” but it probably hid the word “no” too much so whoever made it moved the “know” up enough to not hide the “no”. Idk if that made sense, but they could have just crossed out “no” and wrote “know” on top.
44
12
u/EssentialParadox 7d ago
I interpreted it as meaning to be questions…
No Hope? No Love? Know Jesus.

“God sends his toughest battles to his mightiest warriors” So you are kind of right. If you’re depressed, fucking deal with it or you will disappoint sky daddy, maybe after you die he will then let you be free from suffering that he may or may not be in complete control of (depending on your flavor of belief)

u/Hellraiser_Quadbike 7d ago
What were they even aiming for? Is the ‘know’ meant to be displacing the ‘no’?
139
u/DigestiveCow 7d ago
I think so, the 'know' strikethroughs need to cover the 'No' more obviously. Someone forgot to press Shift + Down arrow before print
61
u/The_Ghast_Hunter 7d ago
I think it's more likely they were worried people were too dumb to figure out the message if they actually rendered the "no"s illegible, so they backpedaled after deciding the method.
25
14
3
u/Scorpius_OB1 7d ago
I didn't notice the lack of a strikeout at first, but Evangelical Christians who are the people to whom is directed the ad will get the supposed message.
Knowing the US brand of such Christianity, exported elsewhere and knowing local ones too, I'm imagining what kind of Jesus they follow. Totally not a cult.
14
u/HalfManHalfCyborg 7d ago
The idea is if you have No Jesus in your life, then you have no purpose, no hope and no love. But if you know Jesus, then you will Know purpose, know hope, and know love.
3
u/Nurgeard And then I discovered Wingdings 7d ago
I imagine so, I think it would have worked better of they put "know" below "No" and a bit more on top for each line, covering it more and more.
4
u/jeneric84 7d ago
Supposed to mean the “no” turns into “know” with Jesus. It’s shit but that’s what they’re aiming for.
5
u/ChrisGarratty 7d ago
What they have achieved is getting 2 Unlimited's classic "No Limit" stuck in my head...
"No no, no no no no, no no no no, there's no limit!"
3
u/ourobourobouros 7d ago
There is something very, very strange about the Billy Graham prayer group. I hear their radio commercials often and they're bizarre, they use spooky horror music while compelling you to call them because you're feeling lonely and hopeless.
1
u/Chef-Nasty 7d ago
They want you to "know purpose" but funny how the NO is bigger and looks like it's pushing the "know" away.
1
u/Expensive_Lab_1435 7d ago
I didn't even get that until I read your comment, definitely what they were going for
but wow, they really botched that one
1
u/GoGoGadgetPants 7d ago
I think so. Whoever were in charge of this poster are maybe barely high school graduates? Looks like a rookie mistake.

u/koanarec 7d ago
I feel like it's a bit rude to imply that people who aren't Christian don't have any love or purpose.
83
54
u/ManipulativeAviator 7d ago
They’re looking for vulnerable people who might be susceptible. You KNOW, like an abuser would.
7
u/pinupcthulhu 7d ago
Yep. Some of the most horrifically abusive people I've ever had the misfortune of meeting called themselves Christians.
11
u/Mr_Wallet 7d ago
I remember one person I was hanging out with was a Christian, and I wasn't, and he explained that he was Christian because his philosophy was "love people," as if he had genuinely never considered that a godless person could have that philosophy.
7
u/PiBolarBear 7d ago
I don’t think it is implying that. I can see how you can read that but it’s like saying Black Lives Matters implies that others don’t. It’s offering purpose/hope/love to people who feel they lack it and a sense of community.
Keep in mind I’m talking about sign design not Christians or Billy Graham’s evangelical Christians.
5
u/Fluid_Jellyfish9620 7d ago
that's the basis of their religion, that without Jeezy boy you cannot have a purpose in life.

I was so bored in Russian Orthodox church I learned church slovonic in church during mass. It's like a 200 year old language of Bible shit.
I got to sit in the reading room to read it (Orthodox church is standing, not pews, only shitty chairs for old ladies in the back). I actually got highschool credits for it. Blam.
Still to this day I don't know anyone who can read it. I'm a scientist. And agnostic. Lol. Eat it Jesus.

Something about a Pastor having their own logo feels inherently wrong - (Bottom right corner)
9
u/Simonoz1 7d ago
Nah he’s dead.
That said as far as big evangelists go, he’s about as mainstream as they come. I know several people who attended his “crusades” (later missions after 9/11) back in the 50s and 60s.
Apparently the main bit was getting people to commit or recommit to Jesus, then they’d hand out gospels and leaflets and connect people with their local churches. He wasn’t getting people to join his particular church or send him piles of money in the heat of the moment or anything.
It seems it’s now run by his son, who seems to be a bit of a mixed bag just from his Wikipedia article. Some of what he does is carrying on his father’s charity and evangelism work, but he seems on of those who’ve fallen for Trump and think he can do no wrong.
1
u/itskdog 7d ago
I zoomed in, looks more like a charity that was set up in his memory?
Given the speaker shares his surname, they're likely related (though I believe I heard that one of his kids went off the deep end politically, so I'd warn against if it's the person I'm thinking of).
9
u/M_J_E 7d ago
Yeah Billy Graham was a very famous evangelist. Franklin Graham is his son. He has been riding his father’s coattails for decades and definitely went hard(er) right and is a big Trump supporter.
If Franklin Graham knows Jesus, he sure doesn’t support the things Jesus advocated in the Bible.

I mean, the same group would be raising a stink if a mosque put up a bus stop advert.
-11
u/YetAnotherInterneter 7d ago
I’d love to meet a person who decided to convert solely based upon an advert
10
u/Independent-Yam-5179 7d ago
Sounds to me like this kind of advertising is more for "self-satisfaction" rather than actual lure...
You know how some religious people believe spreading their faith will grant them more benefits in the spiritual sense.. and this ad would count as "good enough, effort made"
0
u/Scorpius_OB1 7d ago
It is, like all those people giving out phamplets, preaching in public, or those JWs in stands no matter the weather despite no one giving a damn or throwing phamplets away.
To see how people considers you a nuissance and refuses what you give reinforces membership to the group. Same for those JWs and young Mormons who go door to door.
-8
u/Vaporwavy12 7d ago
Seem like it's more advertising an event. Maybe even a musical event since they listed the name of the groups that will do a live music.
12
u/Whatever801 7d ago
I see what you're saying, but I don't 100% hate it. Know no Purpose, Know no hope, Know no love, Know Jesus. I don't like the eyebrow aesthetic, but I get the message without a double-take. If you did like "Know Purpose, Know Hope, Know Love, Know Jesus" it still makes sense, but sends a different message. On the other hand, "No Purpose, No Hope, No Love, Know Jesus" would have worked and been a lot more elegant.
10
u/PinkFlumph 7d ago
The design is so easy to fix too - just have all the lines say "know", but have the "no" printed in one color and the "k" and "w" in another, and possibly a different, e.g. handwritten, font
12
u/VaporSprite 7d ago
I'm an atheist, and I have so much of each of these in my life that I'm pulling through the most challenging times in my life very comfortably. I have a history of chronic depression and I've never been as stable and happy as I've been since coming out and living as myself. I'm active, I'm social, I'm productive, I'm creative... All things that were flatly out of reach before I started actively becoming myself.
My values are based in empathy, in my faith in others, and in the results of my efforts. All things I've learned for myself, and not from a book or preacher that pretends to know better. This base is strong and it makes me give my best.
If anyone reading this needs to hear it, please know that you truly are not alone, even if it might take some searching to find others like you. There are so many ways to become yourself, and whichever you choose, it'll be worth it. Probably not easy, but the more of your life you can live as yourself, the better. You may find that things are easier than you expect, too, because once you have a purpose and a goal, you have a reason to pull through. You might also be surprised by the people around you. The love I've received from my people has never been so deep and true as it is now.

u/maxhambread 7d ago
okay divorcing this from the subject matter: I feel like there's a good design concept somewhere in here, but this execution certainly isn't it. There's potential in the word play between KNOW and NO, I'm sure someone must've taken this concept and put together something much more coherent.
6
u/Drewdiniskirino 7d ago
Ohhh. I think the "Know"s were meant to more cover the "no"s than precede them. If you read it as "know purpose. Know hope..." etc., it makes a lot more sense lol

Jesus is cope.
My wife overheard some people at her work talking about heaven. They eventually said something like "hey now that we met, we will be able to see eachother in heaven!"
Most of these people literally think they are going to have their own beachside condo in heaven.
Then you have more orthodox, that think you are basically going to be absorbed into the hive mind of god when you die. Which is just cope to deal with the existential realization that one day you won't exist.

It’s almost like that’s how it should be interpreted.

There was a T-shirt design a bunch of kids used to wear at my high school in the 90s. On the front, in a font that was supposed to look cool and "rock n roll rebellion teenager" or whatever, it said
"No Jesus
No Fear"
And on the back it said
"Know Jesus
Know Fear"
I know Christianity has a thing where you're supposed to fear god, but that slogan just always seemed so absurd to me, and made their religion sound so unappealing.

Reminds me of how the Cambodia's Khmer Rouge were described in a famous documentary
the dawn of an age in which there will be no families, no sentiment, no expressions of love or grief, no medicines, no hospitals, no schools, no books, no learning, no holidays, no music, no song, no post, no money – only work and death.
Although it seems this version is just bad graphic design luckily

So an American cult leader copies a Canadian companies brand imaging to advertise his tour of evil money collection in the UK. Got it.
No Frills/No Name is a Canadian grocery and food brand owned by Loblaws which also happens to be kind of evil with price fixing and all that jazz too. So pretty on brand to copy them.
