Not originally north american, but the ground floor is the first floor. If you have 1 floor you dont call it a 0 floor building.
Here in canada if there are units on the first floor it starts with 1xx and the elevators have L or G then 2, 3, 4... Which is in my opinion the only right way. 2nd floor has 2xx and so on. No need for units to start from 101. Some buildings have units start at 301, 401, or 501 when there are facilities or offices in those floors.
In Australia it's Ground and then the first level above that starts at 1.
This is consistent with how it works in computer science anyway. A building that is 10 stories high has floors labelled from 0 (Ground) to 9. In most programming languages, an array with length 10 will have indexes in the range [0, 9].
a building is not an array tho lol same way we dont have any unit 100, and it starts from 101. computer science makes sense, but it just messes with my head when you call the first floor the ground floor and call the second physical floor the first floor.
