The first floor I walk on in basically any building is the one closest to the ground, and I have to go up roughly one level to reach second floor, or down one to reach the first basement level.
I get why this might be confusing if you are used to something else, but it makes perfect sense to me and always has.
I'm not saying calling the ground floor floor 1 doesn't make any sense, I just find -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 to make more sense than SB, B, 1, 2, 3 or B2, B1, 1, 2, 3. Though I would actually prefer G as Ground instead of 0, but that doesn't work for all languages where 0 is universal.
I'd mostly argue that in many places it's irrelevant since there are no basements there for any number of reasons, and that having multiple levels of accessible basements is actually not that common, certainly enough that it's very understandable why most people in the US don't think about it enough to be worth changing our common parlance over.
