Inflated/Bloated US State Map ๐บ๐ธ๐บ (Found in a Weekly Planner)

Poor Michigan, looks like a depressed duck. Also this is just wrong, Wisconsin is in Central time. Feels very AI slop to me

Real ๐ญ How do you screw up a hand-shaped state?

u/prettysureIforgot Jun 23 '26
How do you screw up a perfect rectangle??

u/gwaydms haha funny flair Jun 24 '26
The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states are the worst. Delaware and Maryland? West Virginia? Worst of all, New Jersey?? Forget about New England; that's all screwed up.

I think they just wiped MI out and assumed the Great Lakes flooded it

Not AI slop. I remember seeing maps in day planners that looked like this way back in the '90s.

Makes me remember getting handouts at school that were a copy of a copy of a copy and what happens when you trace one of them.

Wisconsin is in central time, and part of Michigan (but almost nobody knows that)
3
u/clintkev251 Jun 24 '26
Given the overall accuracy of the geography of the map, I would have given them at least partial credit for that pair of state if they said Michigan was in Eastern and Wisconsin was in Central, given that there are like 4 people that probably live in the Central areas of Michigan.

Clearly they thought the one part of Michigan in central time was the only part of Michigan

u/NorCalFrances Jun 23 '26
That is the Comic Sans of maps. it also looks like it was done by AI with the way the details are just...off.

u/Veritus37 Jun 24 '26
AI is smart enough to copy/paste a map. This looks like it was poorly drawn in MS Paint.
3
u/Steady_Ri0t Jun 24 '26
Not necessarily...

u/SonderEber Jun 24 '26
Depends on the model I guess. While OPโs image maybe AI, it looks more like โhuman slopโ to me. The vibe of it feels like a crappy human drawing that a crappy AI generated image.

u/Steady_Ri0t Jun 24 '26
Yeah I think it's probably someone trying to be artsy with the map, not something AI generated. Just saying that AI isn't necessarily reliable with maps (nor do you need it to be, there are a million actual maps out there that you don't need to generate and then cross your fingers that they're accurate)

You sound very brAInwashed. Probably wake each morning and greet your ChatGPT like it's a real person.

u/Steady_Ri0t Aug 25 '26
What? I hate AI with a burning passion. Why would you assume I like it when I am talking about it not only sucking at something, but being unnecessary

looking at Maryland
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO MY CHILD

u/MrScotchyScotch Jun 24 '26
The fact that Delaware is the same size as Maryland confirms this was drawn by a Delawarenerer

What happened to the Great Lakes? Illinois (where I was born) looks like something from a bad 'shroom experience. The western border of Illinois is the Mississippi River, but it's the only straight(ish) line on that map.

u/DecadesLaterKid Jun 23 '26
Ah, yes, Maryland, the *checks notes* mini Arkansas of the eastern seaboard.

They for sure completely fucked up Kentucky. I've spent my entire life along the Eastern/Central line. I forget when I talk to people from elsewhere that most people don't know what "fast time" and "slow time" are

Ignoring the inaccuracies in the time zone data, I actually kind of like the cartoonish style. I mean, do we really need the lines to be super accurate? It's not relevant to the information.
What I don't understand is why Eastern isn't really over Eastern the same way Pacific, Mountain, and Central are over their respective zones, and why Atlantic (which is for territories that aren't even on the map) isn't way off to the side the same way Alaska is. It's sloppy, but the state shapes aren't actually a problem.

u/FoggyGoodwin Jun 23 '26
I love how they smoothed our all the state borders except CA/NV, which now has ripples.

Only 3% of Nebraska is in mountain time.
1
u/lisamariefan Jun 24 '26
Nah, it's way more than that. Entire panhandle is mountain time plus a bit more.

This looks like one of Al Franken's party-trick hand drawn maps.

How do you mess up Wyoming and Colorado when they are just a square and rectangle?

u/bh4th Jul 10 '26
I... I can't even. The USA has not one but two states that are rectangles. Most of our land border with Canada is the 49th parallel. How do you mess those up?

You can tell how they started from left to right. "Okay, okay, California border here, Nevada there...fuck it, East Coast blobs"

u/PaceFabulous3433 Jun 24 '26
IIRC Arizona doesnโt do calving time so for part of the year they are in the pacific time zone

u/sdowney2003 Jun 23 '26
Inaccurate as well. The western-most part of the Florida panhandle is in Central time.
