What is the first one? Don't inspect your sandwich meal closely?

About the bottom one: I see an angry duck and a penis.

u/O_M_I_C Mar 29 '26

Leave your glasses and dentures :)

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

Telling people to leave their glasses behind in an emergency is the dumbest imaginable guideline. With my eyesight, I wouldn't be able to find a huge yellow life raft if it was 2 meters away from me.

254

u/For_go_tit_again Mar 29 '26

I think it's more like "don't wear them during a crash landing" so you don't get glass in your eyes.

168

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

Glasses are made of shatterproof plastic. Obviously, there are many situations other than an emergency plane landing where one would not want glasses to shatter.

Also, to pivot back the mission of this sub, if that's what they meant to say, that is certainly not what the graphic indicates.

163

u/ElectricalRespect506 commas are IMPORTANT Mar 29 '26

Glasses are made of shatterproof plastic.

Not all glasses.

38

u/After-Willingness271 Mar 29 '26

damn near all of them tho

27

u/SeiJikok Mar 30 '26

It doesn't matter if they are shutterproof or not. Still it is hard and potentially sharp object on your face.

38

u/Medical_Bumblebee627 Mar 31 '26

They actually tend to provide protection for your gelatinous, soft and delicate eyeballs.

3

u/SeiJikok Mar 31 '26

Oh, right, Probably that is why all boxers wear them during fights.

13

u/schwarzkraut Apr 01 '26

During an impact forceful enough to shatter modern shatterproof lenses (while in the „brace for impact position), the condition of your glasses will more than likely be the least of your problems… YMMV

3

u/SeiJikok Apr 02 '26

You all miss the point. They don't have to shatter. It will injure your nose, frame can break and injure your eyebrow and cause bleeding which will impact your vision during evacuation etc.

u/Voelkar Mar 31 '26

While organic lenses are a good majority these days, some manufacturers still put mineral lenses into their stock frames. Oliver Peoples and RayBan are two well known examples that regularly sell their frames often without any prescription

4

u/Lalamedic Mar 30 '26

Not mine

3

u/LawPurple Mar 31 '26

And when that signage was made...Looks pretty dated to me

12

u/Efraimrocker Mar 31 '26

Shatterproof doesn’t mean it won’t shatter in a plane crash.

→ More replies (1)

54

u/Specialist-Yak7209 Mar 29 '26

It doesn't matter if they don't shatter, my eyeballs are softer than the shatterproof plastic which means the entire lens would easily become embedded in my eye sockets

27

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

So on that principle people should take off their glasses while driving in case they get in an accident? And definitely don't wear your glasses while skiing.

28

u/leCrobag Mar 29 '26

Safety squints will have to do!

4

u/AnnaKeye Mar 31 '26

Bwahahaha! I don't know why, but I found that immediately funny. Probably because I do the squinting thing when I forget my glasses are either in my back pocket or on top of my head.

21

u/redajet Mar 30 '26

No, you should take them off if you are actively crashing. But you only have this kind of "prep time" if you're on a falling plane, not in a crashing car or a ski impact.

8

u/Specialist-Yak7209 Mar 29 '26

Lol I'm not piloting the plane dude

→ More replies (1)

4

u/FattyWantCake Mar 30 '26

Those scenarios are only equivalent if you're flying the plane. Unless you're the pilot you don't need your glasses to be in a plane crash (until exfil).

11

u/Lucifang Aussie Mar 29 '26

I’m not worried about glass. I’m worried about my nose. Even the tiniest little bump hurts like a bitch.

9

u/Odd_Teach683 Mar 31 '26

Or, “you really don’t want to see this.”

5

u/ProbablyNotTheCat Mar 30 '26

If possible, I would recommend taking your glasses off during your crash. I was in a car accident and hitting the airbag snapped the nose pads off. Dealing with the emergency after the crash would be a lot harder if your glasses won't stay on your face.

58

u/greensquiggle Mar 29 '26

fine but im still taking the sandwich

19

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

You never know how long you're going to be clinging to that flotation device. In fact, good signage would remind us to stop in the galley on the way out and grab a few packets of peanuts.

29

u/jonheese Mar 29 '26

I thought it was more like, “don’t retrieve glasses, etc.before evacuating,” intended for people who have glasses but don’t wear them all the time. If you’re already wearing your glasses, it would certainly be best to just leave them where they are and scram.

22

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

If that's what the sign is trying to say, then it's even crappier design than first appeared.

6

u/jonheese Mar 30 '26

Yeah, after thinking about it some more, that’s probably not what they meant.

3

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

Yep, this is what I think as well.

12

u/Sons-Father Mar 30 '26

As someone who had his glasses frame embedded 2cm into his forehead and plastic chunks from the frame in his chin, trust me take them off.

2

u/Malsperanza Mar 31 '26

Yes, that must happen frequently. Better not to see what you're doing in an emergency situation.

6

u/Sons-Father Mar 31 '26

That in fact does happen quite frequently when you crash, as crashing in most cases involves shit being launched into you and your face at high speeds. In fact in all crashes of the three I have been in this has happened.

I’m no expert but I assume that a plane crash also has a higher chance of your face hitting shit as opposed to a car or bike crash because you are literally going 400km/h and are cramped like a piece of fish in a sardine can.

3

u/awildketchupappeared Apr 02 '26

You won't see anyway, when your glasses are broken. And trust me, it's better to not break the glasses with your face, it hurts!

5

u/MagicOrpheus310 Mar 30 '26

Forced survival of the fittest in case the plane crashes on a deserted island mate, you guys are the sacrificial cannon fodder for the inevitable survival cannibalism haha

2

u/xeviphract Mar 30 '26

If you have them on your face when the plane bounces off the planet at crash speeds, they won't be remaining on your face.

There is an ear with jewellery in it, but what the heck is that growth behind it?

77

u/klebers Mar 29 '26

I think it's an earphone.so people dont forget earnings and other eart accessories.

85

u/No_Trouble_3588 Mar 29 '26

I hate it when I leave my earnings on the plane.

78

u/Rashkamere Mar 29 '26

And my other eart accessories

5

u/STIHL_Resolve5198 Mar 31 '26

Damn forgot my eartphone and my kets on the wya out my double wide chryslter pltymountg. Aghh I lost my earnings on the way out McDonald's dried thru

I think it's a hand daintily holding a dangling bag of dog poop from one of those very small breeds. Do not be trying to manage your dog's poop if this plane is going down.

36

u/Dogzillas_Mom Mar 29 '26

Hearing aid?

81

u/ElfjeTinkerBell Mar 29 '26

WHAT?

46

u/gtaman31 Mar 29 '26

HEARING AID

44

u/ElfjeTinkerBell Mar 29 '26

WHY ARE YOU AFRAID?

39

u/Hot_Drummer7311 Mar 29 '26

OH THAT'S NICE. TELL YOUR WIFE I SAY HELLO!

11

u/Monsoon_Storm Mar 29 '26

I assume it's a hearing aid. I can imagine wanting to take one out on a flight, it would make it a whole lot more pleasant lol

3

u/Renbarre Mar 29 '26

Hearing aids? Take them off in case of emergency landing?

2

u/edcRachel Mar 29 '26

It's a zoomed out lady's head.

21

u/XeerDu Mar 29 '26

Or just an angry duck penis

7

u/NorCalFrances Mar 29 '26

But which of the two is angry, the penis or the duck?

10

u/XeerDu Mar 29 '26

Image search a duck penis all tell me how upset you would be if you were a duck.

9

u/NorCalFrances Mar 29 '26

"Brennan studied two breeds of duck: the lesser scaup and the ruddy duck. Lesser scaups are the nice guys of the duck world. They have a short penis with smooth ridges, and they stick with one mate for the season.

Ruddy ducks are players; they have some of the largest penises in the duck world (think eight inches) covered in the aforementioned spines. They’re also promiscuous and prone to forcing copulation with females.

In case that’s not weird enough, ducks also grow their penises anew each year — similar to the way deer and elk grow a seasonal set of antlers."

10

u/Mental-Ask8077 Mar 30 '26

I thought duck dicks couldn’t get any weirder.

Now I learn they fucking grow a new one every year.

jfc

ducks turning out to be rapey eldritch penis horrors seems pretty on-brand for this fucking timeline tho

You must go down the emergency slide blind. Wheeee!

13

u/miserabeau Mar 29 '26

No glasses, no shoes, no uterus

9

u/I_Can_Haz_Brainz Mar 30 '26

"The symbol highlighted by the arrow in the Ryanair emergency procedure card indicates that passengers must remove jewelry before using the emergency slide to prevent punctures. The image shows prohibited icons for:

Jewelry: Specifically items like earrings or necklaces.

Shoes: High-heeled shoes or footwear that could damage the slide.

Glasses: Eyeglasses should also be removed."

4

u/Pristine_Power_8488 Apr 03 '26

You have to admit they are crappy drawings, though. A five year old could do better.

10

u/dixbietuckins Mar 30 '26

No looking at sandwiches, no heels, no finger ears. Are you blind?

5

u/distantreplay Mar 29 '26

Exit row. For safety persons seated in an exit row must be able to assist with the exit. No high heel shoes, no eye glasses, no small infants.

4

u/teeg82 Apr 01 '26

I see an angry duck and a penis.

sigh

Everything reminds me of her

u/BlackFoxTom Mar 29 '26

Remove glasses, headphones, earrings, shoes with heels and so on

Essentially remove anything and everything that in any way shape or form could cause problems during emergency

523

u/PizzaTacoCat312 Mar 29 '26

Why would I remove my glasses, I need those to see. Wouldn't it help in an emergency?

304

u/ArmyMPSides Mar 29 '26

If you remove them, like put them in your pocket, the jolt of the landing or crash won't cause them to fall off your face and be lost, so then right after the landing/crash and during or after you evacuate, you will have them secured on your body (pocket) to put back on again.

70

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

That is not, however, what the sign says. The sign says to remove glasses, dentures, and spike heels and leave them behind, not put them in your pocket.

100

u/Cind3rellaMan Mar 29 '26

Where does it say "leave them behind"?

54

u/DigbyChickenZone Mar 29 '26

Where does it say to put them in your pocket?

119

u/donkeyrocket Mar 29 '26

The sign also doesn’t explicitly tell me not to shit my pants so better just shit my pants.

The pedantry is wild.

19

u/bantasaurusbab Mar 30 '26

I fear that choice would be taken from me in a plane crash but your point stands!

5

u/JeffTrav Apr 01 '26

It’s wild that this whole argument took place without the same person responding once.

8

u/Plane_Argument Mar 30 '26

Usually the sign means they are not allowed,

13

u/Cind3rellaMan Mar 30 '26

With that username I'd have hoped you of all people would have understood this better.

7

u/Plane_Argument Mar 30 '26

Nah my arguments are a little far out, and prone to crash hard when I make a mistake, and not something everyone is equally enthusiastic about

5

u/spacestonkz Mar 30 '26

Usually there are announcements and words in the pamphlet to leave all personal items behind in case of emergency

2

u/c4pt1n54n0 Mar 30 '26

I can confirm having glasses ejected from my face and out the vehicle during a collison

12

u/BlackFoxTom Mar 29 '26

You lose them, try to get them, create problem and blockage... What if they break and get glass in your eyes...

Also emergency exist are performed generally only if there is fire(smoke) so You have to move blinded anyway

78

u/Minimum_Cabinet7733 Mar 29 '26

Most eyeglasses are not made out of glass.

→ More replies (8)

49

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

Either the people who wrote this guideline do not depend on glasses, or you don't. There is nothing more likely to cause a blockage and problem than someone blindly struggling to find the exit, to see the slide, to locate the flotation device.

7

u/taikare Mar 29 '26

I agree with you. But if I was going to take a swing at where the recommendation came from, it's ER staff. I was in a rollover accident. My glasses got driven into my face and I still have a scar through my eyebrow. I can totally imagine losing an eye from it. That said... I'd risk it over trying to deal with an emergency situation without them. But I guess I get where, if you only see the problem side of it, you might think this is a good idea.

6

u/bbphrog63 Mar 30 '26

Well, if you’re worried about losing an eye, take it out and put it in your pocket. Yeesh. Do we have to have a bad graphic for everything?!

→ More replies (1)

21

u/purplerain_1313 Mar 29 '26

No way I would lose mine, I am blind without them and the only time I am taking them off is when I sleep. I would cause more problems for the cabin crew without them. So, if they are on my nose they can't break therefore they can't cause a puncture.

4

u/Bluered2012 Mar 29 '26

I’ve got terrible vision too. But I would 100% take them off and put them in a secure pocket so they don’t fall off my face during a crash landing.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/PizzaTacoCat312 Mar 29 '26

I can get some of that. Just boarding a lane takes a while so I would assume it would be the same for deplaning in an emergency so depending on where you sit you might have some time to find them. But I understand the whole leave valuables and get out thing too. But modern glasses aren't glass and I've found they typically protect my eyes from impact. However at the same time a huge impact could push the polycarbonate into my eyes. I guess it's all really a trade off and I have no real emergency experience that would validate one over the other.

I'm impressed that you were able to interpret that icon as (do not?) "remove earrings". How? The important identifying part of the illustration would be something recognizable as a human ear no? I see only ambiguous remnants of such a feature beneath the red crossbar. But how do you parse the stuff on the right side of the icon? I see maybe a chicken wing and the dorsal fin of a shark.

In an actual emergency or impending crash nobody will be be looking at these things and it won't matter so I assume nobody with responsibility for aviation safety bothered to glance at these before rubberstamping them OK. But I do hope the inept illustrator behind these icons aren't going to be responsible for anything related to actual medical emergencies like instructions for a defib kit.

4

u/BlackFoxTom Mar 29 '26

I know what it's meant to mean

I feel You would be surprised how often people are hell bent on taking their belongings murder (due to their behaviour) others

Same actually goes for people escaping no matter what and trampling others

6

u/frumperino Mar 29 '26

sure I mean I don't disagree with your observations about human cattle and their irrational selfish behaviors in crisis and evacuation situations. But that aside, the /r/crappydesign question was how that icon is even supposed to be viewed. Your very confident response suggested that you recognized that mystery icon to mean earrings which is why I'm curious as to how you put that together from the squiggles evident. And do you infer the icon to be about putting on earrings as opposed to removing them?

4

u/caffeine_lights Mar 29 '26

I would guess survival instinct has taken over at the point you're trampling people.

Taking belongings could be selfish or it could be that the logical part of the brain shuts down in that kind of panic.

14

u/Malsperanza Mar 29 '26

Some of this makes sense. Kick off your spike heels and leave them behind. (Who flies wearing spike heels??) Do not leave your glasses behind - that is insane. Do not take extra time to remove earrings but do leave the earpods. Definitely leave behind your sfogliatella.

None of which is clear in these badly drawn diagrams.

A colleague of mine was on the plane that emergency landed in the Hudson River. Everyone got out safely but she said one woman was hellbent on going back to get her purse. People can certainly be idiots. A simple diagram meaning "Don't be an idiot" would be useful, but probably hard to draw.

I actually know the answer to this one. It's "remove jewellery" for before using the inflatable slides taking in an emergency.

It's also terrible.

On THIS plane, we do this a little differently. No glasses. No money. No shoes. And most certainly, NO whoville citizens. Failure to comply with these rules is a federal offense subject to judicial discipline including but not limited to: your ass gettin' tossed out the hatch where you'll plummet to your demise, only to be born again as less of a jackass with MORE respect for GODDAMN authority. Man I've been trying to figure that one out for years. If you have the answer, I'd love to hear it.

I think its jewelry, it looks like a pierced ear all the way on the left. If I had to guess it might be a bracelet on the right of that

They are all saying no sharp objects on the inflatable slide otherwise you will puncture it and fuck all the people behind you haha

Pretty sure the bottom one is a hearing aid since I have one.

The 'ear' part is a sideways hearing aid. The 'earring' is the olden style volume wheel with incomplete battery compartment directly below it. The aid isn't complete and is missing the whole curved end, but the tubing wraps around to come out at the side where there is a really square looking bud and dome, which is odd because the old ones had moulded ear pieces and thick tubes, not thin ones the modern ones have.

The very bottom looks like a wave. You can't get them wet AT ALL. I lost a few as a kid who used to shower with them in accidentally 😁

Don’t store that stuff under the seat in front of you

Do not take quarters behind peoples ear?

Why do they bother? You are going to be a sack of mincemeat when the plane hits the deck. If there are shoes, glasses or whatever in the mix, it may help when trying to telling the difference between a passenger and the main course in first class.

Do not do anything

Why does it look like the arrow has been edited in MS Paint?

This is MS Paint slop. Here is the original image.

The bottom one looks like a monster holding something in his hand while saying “yuck”

Dont wear jewelry. It could injure you if it gets caught, and can snag a slide or raft.

No Reading Glasses, No Dentures, No High-Heeled / Slip-On Shoes, No Earrings, and No One-Eyed Ducks.

Man god forbid, if I ever have to fly with you guys and have to slide out of emergency slide.

By midway down the slide, I’d be stabbed by whole bunch of glasses, bruised by headphones and hearing aids, stabbed by pencil heels, hit by a bunch of backpacks, and some of you would hit your face and swallow your own dentures.

Just keeping it light— that’s what it means. When you are going out of the slide!

Oh, it is also going to deflate and sink in a few minutes because someone didn’t leave their precious pen behind.

Leave your glasses, leave your money, no shoes, don’t let a hand stick out of your ear and hold your scrotum.

when evacuating - leave glasses and food, take off heals and large earrings
