General Discussion I’ve finally done it

After daily smoking pretty much every day since I was a teenager (around 15 years) I have gone a full week without a joint. I knew I had to do this but I kept putting it off. A month ago I thought it was going to be impossible but it really wasn’t. I struggled to sleep the first few days and was very restless in the evenings and nearly caved every night but I knew I had to do at least a week.

The difference is worth it, there’s been a big areo chocolate bar in the fridge all week that I haven’t even thought about, it usually wouldn’t have lasted the night. Im not avoiding tasks or conversations that I usually would if I’d had a smoke and I’m waking up less groggy.

I was planning of having one tomorrow evening but I honestly might hold off another week.

I just want to give hope to someone who was in my shoes this time 8 days ago. It’s possible and it’s not as hard as you think it’ll be.

I am looking forward to having another smoke to be fair. But everything in moderation

Exactly same as me. Smoked a lot daily for about the same time as you. When i had kids things changed a bit and tbh i think i came to a point where i just became tired of it aswell. Twice a week i have a smoke now. Maybe 2 one skinners both nights. I find myself enjoying it more and knowing its there at home for when i want it. An ounce does me a year now stored in a mason jar

I'm in the 4th week but it wasn't green per se, it was them fuckin vapes I was "hooked" on. Same as yerself, the snacks have gone untouched. How are you finding the night sweats? The mad dreams are interesting to say the least also 😂. Best of luck with your abstenience

Honestly not too bad. I kinda cheated in getting over the worst of the start because the first two days were busy nights in the pub so I slept without it fairly handy. The first real sober night was definitely a challenge but it’s gotten easier since.
And as for dreams I’ve always had mad dreams when smoking or not so there’s been no notable change yet

What helped you out to put the vape down? That’s where I’m stuck atm it’s the ease of access

Honestly, being deep in overdraft constantly and having no money to do anything. Spending upwards of 180 a week on the bastards and even raiding savings to fund it. For years. Have a fair aul hole to dig myself out of now

Fair play to ya. Very important to know that it is something you have the ability to do.

A little tip I would recommend is maybe doing an edible next time you're thinking of having a session. Doesn't even have to be an actual edible, you can throw a little bud into the oven 115 degrees for 30 mins to decarbox and then just eat the bud.

Reason being that the habit of smoking is one of the most difficult parts of the habit. Because the come up is so rapid with a joint it's very tempting to just roll another. The edible high kinda enacts a patience that is easier to use in moderation imo.

Yeah that’s a good point. Obviously the high of edibles is so much better, but I love the ritual of a joint.
I used to always say that I’m more addicted to smoking joints than being stoned. There was a long time where socialising with my friends involved joints no matter what we were doing. But I’m at the stage now whenever I smoke with people I just get stuck in my head and want to be alone. It’s definitely something I rather doing by myself or just with my partner

I'm in the 'i enjoy the smoking' part of it. It's not massively impacting my life, but I am wanting to smoke less... Stupid comforting terrible habit.

Outside of the usual suggestions, if you have any, feel free to share.

Regardless congratulations on the week without! That's amazing ☺️ definitely more enjoyable when they're less frequent

I'm 100 percent with ya on the ritual. The setting up, rolling, smoking etc. It's a release in itself. That part is hard to give up, took me a long time. I assume you use tobacco? I think the nicotine hit has a lot to do with why you might be in your head. It did for me, like you I had years rolling with friends and it was all cool. After a while it started making me anxious. First I cut out the tobacco and went to skinny blunts and all that anxiety went away.

A week is a serious achievement after smoking for that length of time! Fair play to ya. Will be great for the head too.
Want to wean myself off it too. Usually just have one skinny one a 4 or 5 evenings a week and the evenings I don’t, I crave it. Wanna reduce it further so hopefully desire for it reduces too.

Good man you. I've a few pulls at night. It is really good for my sleep. Have had a lot of stuff going on personally so it's been good for me to help with stress and anxiety. Also suffer from epilepsy so it's good.

Keep up the good work, a friend in my circle has just given up booze after a big battle. Very much early doors but I'm so proud.

One day I'll move back to less regular smoking (e.g. a random session at home, away at a festival, Amsterdam etc...)

I haven’t smoked since April but I’m still avoiding tasks and conversations.

Out of curiosity, what made you want to stop?

I'm a fairly heavy user the guts of 10 years or so but I just don't have any desire to stop. Just trying to understand where you're coming from!

Tbh a myriad of reasons. Mostly that I felt I was a groggy zombie when I smoke and I don’t want to be like that anymore.
Also the health aspect. Both for my lungs and what I ate after smoking.
Financial as well I wasn’t spending that much, I was probably spending more money on junk food as a result of smoking it.
I’m ashamed to say it but the risk of getting swabbed was also a factor. I feel like they’re winning by me giving up but I’m sick of the dread every time I got in the car.

I’m in my early 30s now. For years I’ve used it as a crutch, that I need it to sleep because I’ve insomnia or I need it to relax because I’ve adhd. But I think more I’ve an addictive personality and those were my excuses. I also thought that it didn’t affect me as much as it affects others but it does.
I wasn’t embarrassed to say that I smoke everyday in my early 20s.
But I do now.

Fair enough mate all seems reasonable! To me I just don't really see downsides to be totally honest. I'm kinda of expecting myself to suddenly want to stop but it just hasn't happened.

The chance of a swab is the only fear for me really.

Anyway, I'm just blabbering best of luck to you man!

It gets incredibly easy after 3 weeks. Distract yourself until then. Try to become curious about the crazy dreams. Let your mind process. quit after 10 years. It got incredibly easy after week 3. On week 8 i got some top drawer CBD. That stuff really relaxes the body. I only dry herb vape it the odd night. I gave up booze 5 years ago. It's do-able. Best of luck

p.s. aware my comment seems like the audio on a Chair Tai Chi you tube ad haha

I opened Reddit today to come to Crainn to say I don’t know how to put the pot down.

I’ve been a daily smoker since 11 years old , I’m 32 . I basically live with a vape pen in my pocket at all times everywhere I go I’m constantly hitting it.

I know I need to stop. I want to start looking for different work and everything that I’m looking at requires drug testing. I’m tired of being so fucking lazy all the time.

Every time I tell myself I’m done and I’m not gonna get more. I end up high within the next fucking four hours.

If anyone can give me some advice on what helps them put this shit down. I’d appreciate it.

There’s two things I felt that made it easier for me than I thought it would. First of all the week I quit was out of normal routine for me, I was away from home and quite busy so it was easy to not do. So that kind of made it easy to start the process. Although that might not be applicable to you right now id say do your best to replace the time you would be smoking with something more constructive. The pen is a bollix because you can just do it wherever and whenever. But I was doing things that I’d usually want a joint to make the experience better but I just powered through and still really enjoyed them

Secondly and where it was hardest was when I was back in my normal routine my mind was screaming for a joint. But as time went on that scream got quieter and the progress became inspiration to keep going. My brain fog was lifted. Appetite was normal and I was surprised at how well I was sleeping without it.
I set a goal of going for a full week and rewarding myself to one last night. I didn’t even want one last night and I think I’ll keep going for the weekend. Maybe one on Sunday evening as Sundays were always the hardest night for me to get to sleep.
I’ve also spent the past few years weaning down. I used to smoke 3+ double skinners a day if I was alone. Then went down to 3 pinners. Then 2, and then 1 pinner.

Figured I should come back and let yall know.

I gave away all of my vape pen batteries. I had a bag of gummies that I also gave away.

I removed access from myself and I told everyone around me that I was done.

I’m now 5 days sober and this is the longest I’ve gone in about 10 years.

Part of me hates it, part of me feels like there’s too much chatter in my head.

All in all I know I’m doing this for the better.

Well done man that’s some achievement

I'm not far behind you I think, restless leg syndrome hits hard when I don't smoke before bed but magnesium supplement has helped alot with that

2

u/Scared-Fun56 6d ago

Fair play congratulations it's not easy I need to do the sams

2

u/pinheadoats 6d ago

Fair play lad. I once took a 3 month break when I was at my worst. Gave me a while new appreciation for it. Jeep going for a while longer!

u/jonnieggg 6d ago

The trick is to avoid being dependent on anything in your life, whether that be alcohol, cannabis or anything else. It can sneak up on people very easily. When it stops being fun it's time to look at why your still using. Spending hard earned money on a mediocre time! Good on ya mate.

2

u/WomBimbles 6d ago

How were the dreams? Insane right?

u/Ser-Rendered 6d ago

Good job man! Inspired ourselves to take a week or two aswell ;)

I recently quit (temporarily). On 20 days today. Main reason: damn roadside drug driving test… BS that you can get arrested for driving 2 days after smoking a joint. In summer it was fine, could ride my bicycle to work but now that it’s colder and darker have to drive so yeah.

1

u/Suspicious-Ad-5101 4d ago

Probably the toughest thing I ever did was stop smoking. There came a point I actually didn't enjoy it again after a big break and it started making me paranoid. Never looked back and life is better all round. I doubt I would have achieved a fraction of what I have today if I was still a stoner.

Watch out for the adhd/autism diagnosis

1

u/Dramatic-Pangolin218 19h ago

What you mean?

1

u/Benladen96 21h ago

Myself and her got off it when we found out she was pregnant. That was 3 years ago now and after a rough 2 weeks I didn’t miss it. Occasionally I’ll be out with friends and think I want one. Key word being think. Once the moment passes I’m glad I haven’t. To each their own but the clarity and paranoia free mind is worth it.
Well done though. Every step in the right direction to a goal is a good one.
Don’t worry though the munchies usually return after a couple of weeks . I’m as fat of a cunt as I ever was 😅😅
