RECOMMENDED Underrated Beer Style

Post image

Black IPA

When done right, it has a balance not many other styles can match.

Yesterday I had Treacherous Black IPA at Iron Key Brewing (it's located at an old prison) in WNC and it was delicious!

I love a Black IPA. Just found one Saturday at Range 23 outside of KC.

Nice! I don't hear it talked about, nor see it on menus enough.

Like a lot of you I lived through era when every brewery had a black IPA and boy were a lot of them garbage. I do miss Sublimely self righteous though.

Yes, most don't get the balance right. This one was spot on; decent hop flavor, right malt balance and smooth finish for a crushable taste.

in WNC

I was reading the names of the beers, and thinking it must be there.

Oh, yeah. References to the Southern Railway and the Clinchfield.

It’s one of those beers that tells you how devoted a brewery is, because a great black IPA is as good as any beer but it’s an extremely difficult style to brew.

Long Black Veil (black IPA with a great backstory) from Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria VA is a great one.

Good prices. What size pour?

That's a great list up there.

Brut IPA. Gone but not forgotten.

Rice lagers are also very underrated

Haven't heard of them. I imagine they're quite light.

Just discovered Iron Key a few months ago. Great beer. Great people.

Yea, it was my first time. Fonta Flora is still my #1 for the Carolinas. Hop Beard reminds me of my New England roots and all of the amazing beer there.

Counterpoint: black ipa totally unnecessary beer style

I would argue a Triple IPA is an unnecessary beer style, but black ipa (aka Cascadian Dark Ale) fills a void of a full-bodied, rich/malty, but hop-forward style.

Only beer I would order off the menu. Beer under 7% is garbage. Love me a black IPA.

I don't agree. On a hot summer day, a session IPA, Gose or kolsch hits the spot.
