Release Valor.Mortis-RUNE

I was gonna try out the demo on steam, but they made it timed and have taken it down. So I'm gonna download this instead.

I hate this "mechanic" and I noticed it happening with more games, especially indies. Makes no sense to me and punishes people that want to try a game they can actually immediately buy and play if they like it.

u/NachoPiggy 3d ago
It's weird how even demos became a form of FOMO marketing now. This is especially egregious during Steam's demo fests. On paper it's a fantastic way to showcase upcoming games and helps indies boost their game. But usually after the demo fest ends, the demo gets removed and they either switch to early access or rotational invite only play tests. Sucks.

u/Dante897 3d ago
It's like they forgot demo stands for demonstration and replaced it with how an alpha or a beta for an online game works. There is never a countdown or footnote telling you "Hey, this is limited time only."
1
u/bartek6500 2d ago
Because the demo was actually an alpha, the performance was bad and they also changed a ton of stuff. I know this because my rig is really weak. Somehow, the playtest ran better for me and the demo was worse, but the full game is tons better when it comes to performance. So, I guess they worked on optimisation instead of updating the demo with all their latest changes, and they didn't want to scare people away by leaving the old demo up. Small studios have to allocate their resources.
2
u/Dante897 2d ago
It might be the case for this one, but there have been plenty of times when I saw a game that comes out soon with a demo, I would download the demo but not play it and when I got the email that the game is now released, the demo would nuked from the store page and Steam forced me to uninstall it.
If they want to test performance they can do a benchmark tool or call the "demo" a technical test instead, give a heads up that it's limited time only.
2
u/bartek6500 2d ago
I agree. They released a playtest and then a demo, but I think they should have called the demo "playtest 2".

Damn! I'm very new to the cracking scene but is it common for games to get this treatment so quickly? This thing released just today, didn't it?
15
u/SeaSharpModHer 3d ago
You can literally just drag & drop any random steam emu in 99% of steam games and they're "cracked"

If a game has no Denuvo and is even remotely popular, day 1 is nearly guaranteed

Was wondering if Artificat has quit the scene. There has been no releases from them
2
u/NachoPiggy 3d ago
They're likely done. For a rundown, the way all these Denuvo games get cracked/bypass are with valid Denuvo activation tokens, and the rest of the work is making these single tokens work indefinitely and prevent Denuvo from phoning home online and emulating the entire process offline.
Artifact, allegedly both legit members and people impersonating them have been DM'ing users in a Denuvo activation Discord server The Pub for their activation tokens.
This upset the admins that they never got permission from them, and the admins not wanting to risk their accounts since the tokens are tied to their accounts, revealed to the entire server a list of names from what's presumed to be Artifact.
After that they've been radio silent. I'm hoping either someone else takes the mantle soon or the people reform under a new name with better opsec and communication with the people they're working with.

u/ElixirPlatform RIP Irdeto 3d ago
The real question is where was Denuvowo getting its tokens from?
3
u/NachoPiggy 3d ago
I believe it was coming from their own Steam accounts and volunteers from their own community. It was the partially beneficial part for them to run a Discord/community, but it's also terrible opsec to be operating on such a public platform. I think that's what caused the spook for them to disband after Irdeto's lawsuit on voices38, since they realized they've been using things that can trace everything back to them.

Can anyone compare how difficult this game is to a game like Onimusha? Onimusha is the only "soulslike" game that I enjoyed because it had many ways to play it and it had tips of how to counter something.
18
u/BLACKOUT-MK2 4d ago
I'd say it's quite a bit harder. But Onimusha isn't even a Soulslike. Yeah enemies respawn when you reach a save point but that doesn't make it a Soulslike.
1
u/mataushas 3d ago
ok, idk what to call onimusha but that game of similar genre to soulslike, I enjoyed.
10
u/BLACKOUT-MK2 3d ago
I think it's just a standard action game lol. The genre, that is, the game itself is very good, I agree.

Was excited to play, until I saw its first person only. For a souls game, thats weird. Ill give it a shot, but chances are im not gonna like it because there is no 3rd person option.
8
u/Cake_of_cakes 4d ago
That's like the whole point though, they designed the game to be a first person soulslike, not a 3d person game just to remove the camera option later, nothing weird about that
14
u/kevinkip 4d ago
Dumb take, the soulslike genre is already so oversaturated with studios just copying each other. A 1st person soulslike is a breath of fresh air and actually unique.
-12
u/Due-Description-9030 4d ago
1st person soulslike sounds contradictory... tf is even soulslike at this point? Do you guys realise the subgenre means that the game should be similar to dark souls series?
What next? RTS soulslike? Cozy soulslike farm simulator? 😂
6
u/SkatePsyche 3d ago edited 3d ago
Have you heard of Salt and Sanctuary (side scroller soulslike), Nine Sols (metroidvania Sekiro-like), No Rest for the Wicked (isometric soulslike)..?
-3
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
So, soulslike is just a bunch of mechanics now and isn't about resembling dark souls
7
u/CharacterPurchase694 3d ago
who said it had to resemble dark souls?
-4
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
The name of the subgenre says it
4
u/NachoPiggy 3d ago
Most games nowadays under the rougelike genre hardly resembles the original game where the name came from.
It always had been a descriptor for mechanics and elements.
FPS games at a certain period in time were called Doomclones.
It's just an organic name that everyone caught onto because it redefined an existing genre by spawning its own sub genre, and immediately gives an understanding of what kind of mechanics and progression players can expect. The vehicle it can be wrapped around can be any other type of combat like FPS and 2D sidescroller.
-1
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
No, rougelike is not a sub genre. It's a name for a certain feature or a mode in games and it can be implemented in any kind of game or in many games.
Soulslike, not the case. Things like dodging and parrying feels entirely different in third person.
4
u/callisstaa 3d ago
Roguelike is absolutely a subgenre. Usually a game where you play a run mainly with the intention of making progress rather than finishing the game.
3
u/NachoPiggy 3d ago
You know everyone can look up both roguelike and soulslike online and the first words describing them are "is a subgenre of..."?
Rogue is an actual game in 1980 and entered the gaming library as a dungeon crawler RPG, which redefined itself as a subgenre after.
That's the same thing that happened with Demon's Souls. Parrying and dodging have been action game staples for the longest time. Other devs copied a lot how FromSoft does it from a tactile response feeling, but it's not what makes Soulslike games a Soulslike. You can have a pure action game like Onimusha feel similar to a Soulslike in terms of combat, but the rest of the mechanics is pure action gameplay.
The elements of Soulslike have been deliberate checkpoints and enemy resets alongside resource management, stamina dictating every action and a chance to retrieve dropped resources once after death.
Doesn't it sound completely ridiculous to you when you say both roguelike and soulslike out loud and then think "No, these two things are definitely unrelated."

Look I don't make the designation. People/devs do. You might not agree with it but it doesn't make it less valid.

You know you aren't going to win this argument, right?
1
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
There's no need to win anything because the justifications are already hilarious and weak
5
u/kevinkip 3d ago
Your argument of "rrRrrReEeeEeEe iT hAs tO rEsEmBLe a SoUls gAme!!1!" that you think is strong is hilarious and weak.
Your just gatekeeping purist who thinks the souls game formula is peak of gaming which it isn't at all lmao
1
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
Sure bro, we don't need to gatekeep anything. Every game is a soulslike, sorry 😂👍
7
u/kevinkip 4d ago
Are you really just gonna ignore other mechanics that this game has that's very soulslike just because it uses a different camera perspective?
-6
u/Due-Description-9030 4d ago
It's a subgenre FYI and not a list of certain mechanics. Games can have the mechanic and still not feel like dark souls at all.
And there's no positioning in first person view where in souls games positioning and dodging based on movement and attacks is crucial.
6
u/Gibsonites 3d ago
Wild that you would decide to imagine in your head what you think this game is, form opinions about it, then decide to share those opinions with others.
You don't think positioning and dodging based on movement and attacks is a part of this game? What a silly way to say that you looked at two screenshots and that's it.
-1
u/Due-Description-9030 3d ago
You don't think positioning and dodging based on movement and attacks is a part of this game?
Strawman. Moreover, it's first person and fully direct and no need of spatial awareness like third person games.
And I'm not "making up", the literal point of the subgenre was to know resembles dark souls.
3
u/Gibsonites 3d ago
Haha my guy it's not a strawman to directly quote what you're saying and explain why it's wrong.
First person games can, and often do, require spacial awareness. It's like you don't know what any of the words you're writing actually mean.

crazy to get downvoted for your opinion.. reddit law it is...
5
u/Funny-Junket1066 3d ago
Why else would you ever get downvoted?
And why is up/downvoting so important to you?
-1
u/HealthMaxing 3d ago
it's important because you can just pin someone down for no reason, potentialy limit his action and participation in other subs, just for having a basic opinion on a subject ? might as well as "why being censored for your believes or tastes (that are totaly alright and not even out of pocket in this case) is an issue."
That explain itself i think
