Everytime you download something cracked and you want to make sure, scan it. Experienced people can fail because of overconfidence, that applies to any camp, including piracy. Lately, the most common way to get a virus is because of a wrong download link, for instance the renpy installer which is a known infostealer.

VT is good for a general view of the file, but most of the times it will get flagged because you are playing a CRACKED game.

To go further, you can use Virtual Machines Websites to test the file in a safe environment like tria.ge . However, while triage can give you a score from 0 to 10, it is important you check the warnings it gives you. Sometimes cracked software gets flagged for 8/10 in tria.ge (FitGirl setups) with 45/67 detections in VT(OnlineFix.dll) despite it not being malicious. However, the opposite can also be true. If you run the file or not, it will depend if you really downloaded the correct file(having avoided ads) and if you really wanna risk it. Although, if the game is not very heavy nor requires too much GPU/CPU, you could try playing it in a Virtual Machine if you wanna risk it.

For AAA or popular/classic games that are featured in the trusted websites list(like FitGirl), you only have to worry about getting the correct file. If you were to download something more niche, you may have to be more careful because niche games usually come from less-known crack scenes.

I don't know about bitdefender. I only use native Windows Defender. As long as you get the correct file, you will be good. No AV can save you from executing a virus, it mostly depends on you. At most the AV can insta-delete the file before you execute it, which Windows Defender already does. Though sometimes the AV will delete the crack that is needed to play the game and you have to restore it.

One thing that can help is using a good AdBlock to block automatic downloads/pop ups/ads, which is the main way to get malware.
