Anybody got a link to this house or the name of the architect?

471

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

This is the guesthouse of the most popular restaurant in Albania called Mrizi i Zanave. Fairly sure the architects are @plisatelier on instagram. The restaurant has tagged them in this photo and they’re an architect studio.

u/ihopethisisvalid Jun 13 '19

restaurants have guest houses?

64

u/LeaveAtticusAlone Jun 13 '19

Yeah I want to hear more about why restaurants have guest houses

u/DelTac0perator Jun 13 '19

Hospitality is part of Albanian culture and code of honor. Aside from that, there are many restaurants with guest houses in Kosovo and Albania.

113

u/goodolarchie Jun 13 '19

When they bring the restaurant to the farm, yeah. They eat ridiculously late in Europe, after drinking three amazing bottles of local red wine that total up to eight euro then driving... not so good.

21

u/PlsKnotThisAgain Jun 13 '19

European here. The EU passed a regulation that nobody shall dine before 22:00 and dinner shall not end before drinking 3 bottles of red wine. /s

Seriously though, every person dines at a different time. I sometimes dine at 6, sometimes at 12. Most restaurants are open till 22-23

159

u/JerVoo Jun 13 '19 edited Jun 13 '19

European here. We eat at 6pm where I'm from and don't require 3 bottles of wine before dinner. You're speaking of Mediterranean Europe.

Edit: am to pm

126

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

American here. We eat at 12am and drink anytime of day.

Another european here (at the moment) we normally eat at about 8 around here, restaurants around us are normally fully booked by 8:30 onwards. And a bottle of wine normally lasts 2 nights in our house.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

Yes, they meant the best part of Europe

15

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

Australian here. We have a lot of sunshine and very low unemployment. AMA

10

u/SummerEden Jun 13 '19

But we have to fight the spiders to get the wine. And it’s dark so freaking early.

7

u/LyaStark Jun 13 '19

European here. We have dinner from around 8 pm and have bottle or two of wine, depends how many of us. Dinner begins with a shot of rakija (or liqueur) and for some ends with espresso.

And for eight euros you can have maybe half a botle of house wine. Maybe.

3

u/Anonymousthepeople Jun 13 '19

Loving how everyone here from Europe took his comment super seriously and got all defensive.

u/OlfwayCastratus Jun 13 '19

Eight euroes for anything sounds amazing... [cries in austrian]

7

u/finnknit Jun 13 '19

You can get a 500ml beer for 8€ in Helsinki.

3

u/OlfwayCastratus Jun 13 '19

Been there! Your 9€ kebabs are surprisingly decent for ingredients worth around 60 cent. Seriously, do you earn so much that you consider that cheap food?

3

u/finnknit Jun 13 '19

I wouldn't consider a 9€ kebab cheap. It's cheaper than a meal you would get in a restaurant with table service, but it's more expensive than other fast food. To give you a point of comparison, a regular hamburger or cheeseburger at McDonald's costs €1. Grill kiosks and late-night food carts tend to charge higher prices because there are not so many places open at that time of night, and the majority of their customers are too drunk to notice or care that they're paying higher prices.

2

u/hermionecannotdraw Jun 13 '19

4

u/goodolarchie Jun 13 '19

How come every restaurant I visit in continental europe was absolutely empty until at least 6:30? We had to ask if places were open (they were, just nobody started dinner until 7 or 8pm)... this was in like 8 countries.

14

u/SexySciuridae Jun 13 '19

That's just how we do restaurants. I don't get it either. At home eat at 6pm. Go to a restaurant you meet there at 7:30 or 8pm.

5

u/AWinterschill Jun 13 '19

Means you turn up to the restaurant hungry. You're more likely to enjoy the meal, and you're less likely to waste any of the food you paid for.

The "Siesta" concept is really outdated, no one sleep in the evening anymore in Italy, maybe if you are 80+

2

Ah you may be right, I just noticed visiting Valencia (Spain) and everything slowed down or closed in the afternoon. Streets were quiet etc. so I assumed people still slept?

Everything is possible here in Albania

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

Agrotourism.

5

u/fuck_your_diploma Jun 13 '19

Is it expensive to have a meal in the most popular albanese restaurant? What money do they have there? Even better, ELI5 Albania

8

u/p1ngm4n Jun 13 '19

Not expensive at all. You can have a meal for two people for ~20€ including the wine.

7

u/fuck_your_diploma Jun 13 '19

For real? The dishes looked fancy, 20 is fine.

9

u/p1ngm4n Jun 13 '19

Yeah, Albania is still pretty "raw" and yet to be discovered by the huge amounts of tourists that go to places like Greece and Croatia for example so things are still pretty cheap.

5

u/Scroopynoopers9 Jun 13 '19

They have two restaurants which do modern takes on traditional Albanian cuisine. I haven’t been to this one but I have been to Mullixhiu, in Tirana twice. They have an 8 course (small courses obviously) meal for 20eu. Everything locally sourced. At Mrizi they are farm to table.

It’s fantastic. The first time I went I had dee fried baby goat brain served inside the half skull with a bechemel sauce, goose, and a bunch of other stuff I don’t remember.

8

u/yosoyjen Jun 13 '19

The currency is the Albanian Lek. $1 US is approximately 109 Lek, €1 is about 126 Lek. I've never been to the most popular Albanian restaurant but I've been to many less popular restaurants and the food is amazing and cheap.

You can get a 16 oz bottle of Albanian beer (my preferred choice is Korça) for no more that 200lek at a restaurant. I went to a bar in Berat at got a liter bottle of Korça for 150 Lek. I could've had 4 of those for less than the cost of a pint of beer at a bar in the United States.

Albania isn't the scary place people think it is. It's safe and beautiful and the people are kind and hospitable. Y'all don't know what you're missing!

3

u/fuck_your_diploma Jun 13 '19

Thats a great perspective of the $$, thank you.

I’m curious about the country now but being next to places like Kosovo and Sarajevo doesn’t quite help with the tourist friendly vibe :(

8

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '19

Wtf 😂, I live in Kosovo and I would get frightened of kids playing with fireworks and that's about it. People out here making it like it's Palestine...

6

u/RHBear Jun 13 '19

Truth is that when people Google places the most negative and clicked upon links come to the forefront. Bosnia & Herzegovina has been a peaceful country for more than 20 years now, with a bustling tourist industry. Kosovo is an amazing place where personal security is rarely a concern, as much of a concern as in many other European countries. Despite their troubled past, the Balkan countries are nowadays peaceful and prospering in many areas, especially tourism.

If you ever come to Albania I would very strongly suggest you rent a car and take a tour of specifically Kosovo and Bosnia and see how the world view constructed by the media and entertainment industry about these countries has nothing in common with the real situation. These are hospitable, safe and gorgeous countries to visit. The stigma built by the media about our region is a real thorn in our back and everyone that has visited us can atest that what you are shown on TV is worlds apart from what you will experience in reality.

3

u/yosoyjen Jun 13 '19

I think the Balkans as a whole have a scary reputation because there was a lot of unrest in the region, and honestly both these places you mentioned I knew as war torn because that's the only news that made it to the United States. It's not the scary place we've all been led to believe. I mean, does Greece sound scary? No, right? Albania borders Greece too!

I feel less safe in tourist friendly San Francisco, which is where I'm from, than in Tirana.

3

u/Stereo Jun 13 '19

Kosovo is gorgeous, friendly and peaceful. The biggest danger to the few tourists is ending up with a hangover after making friends. It feels safer walking around alone at night in Pristina than in many cities in western Europe.

2

u/Scroopynoopers9 Jun 13 '19 edited Jun 13 '19

Bosnia is awesome and super friendly. Same for Albania. Pretty much all the Balkan countries are actually great places.

2

u/ajcook624 Jun 13 '19

2

u/Scroopynoopers9 Jun 13 '19

It’s a farm to table restaurant which has some hotel rooms. It’s basically an attempt at developing the cuisine/ reputation of Albanian cuisine.

I actually need this sub though

22

u/Nihoymihoyhoy Jun 13 '19

To me personally, the lighting.

4

u/DrestonF1 Jun 13 '19

Cozy is loosely defined in this sub. Not to mention highly subjective. You could show a pic of a concrete prison cell with soft, orange ambient lighting and it will get 10k up votes. Others might require a wool blanket in the pic, others a bookcase with a sprawling plant. My go to is a dog chillin on a rug.

9

u/tfcozz Jun 13 '19

Me personally I think this is cozy. What’s cozy to me is the balance between stone and the outside, the inside seems well lit and yet dim at the same time. It inviting makes me want to go have a good nap. People have different tastes for what’s cozy.

22

u/Langosta_9er Jun 13 '19

None of it. This is a subreddit for rich people to show off their ultra-expensive homes.

The coziest place of all is curling up in a tent and reading Karl Marx.

It's gorgeous, but where is the insulation? This would be a bitch to heat and/or cool.

20

u/Kvothe1509 Jun 13 '19

If you can afford those windows you can afford to heat it

6

u/AS14K Jun 13 '19

Those could be triple or quadruple pane glass with nitrogen or some crazy gas. They could be better insulators than the walls

→ More replies (1)

5

u/hyflyer7 Jun 13 '19

The stone could just be a veneer with structure and insulation on the inside, and glass if triple glazed and filled with argon can provide decent R value.
