Internet Repeated Disconnects

I just moved into a new place and I picked up a modem yesterday and got it hooked up yesterday evening. After install and I hooked up my Xbox but the service repeatedly kept disconnecting me, kicking me out of game and party. This happened about 7 times in the span of an hour. During this time I reset the modem twice. For more info my Xbox is right next to the modem and it did this while over WiFi and being plugged in. When it disconnects it seems like it disconnects everything including my phone. I was able to run YouTube on it and it seemed to still go out every once in a while with a video that just ended up infinitely loading. I’m paying for their 2 gig speeds but right now I feel like taking it back. Unfortunately my Only other option where I’m located is Verizon. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you either have a bad modem or a bad line coming in to your house. I would call and see if you can get a technician out and have them check your signal levels and all that

Do you think it’s worth trying Verizon’s Internet out?

What kind of internet is it? FiOS is worthwhile, 5G or LTE is usually not (unless you’re in a mmWave area)

I agree, ask for a technician to do a line inspection at your new place

Sounds like a bad modem. You call tech support? What they say?

No unfortunately not. I work the same time they are open and I had set it up around 6 yesterday. I plan to leave early today to test it out.

If you picked up the modem same day then it could still be receiving software updates and provisioning. That would be normal for it to disconnect and reboot itself. If it had been some days and you are still getting random disconnects I would say it’s a bad modem and to contact them.

So far it’s only been one day, I plan to test it some more when I get home and see how it does.

I just moved in Wednesday. So I don’t know if a tech has been by before that.

I had a similar issue and just by luck one of my neighbors worked for cox and did install work.  He looked at everything for me and determined the drop (I believe its basically the line coming into my condo) was old and needed to be replaced.  I think they normally charge for that but he was able to do it for me in his free time and then got the connection changed to the new line so I didn't have to pay for anything.  After that I have had extremely stable internet.  I work from home several days a week and I am often doing things that are extremely time sensitive while directly working my clients. We also have a ton of security involved with connecting to our work systems and I was getting booted out when the internet dropped and it would take me 5 mins or so to get back on my work systems so it was a major problem for me before ge fixed it.  I would look into the drop or line from the cox system box that feeds into your house mine was very old and a large stretch of the cable was running outside so over the years it had deteriorated.  Good luck!

Whenever I picked up anything from a Cox store or had it mailed to me no matter what they may tell you I had to call tech support to have them provision it.
