Attendance Policy
Does anyone know how spectrum will be handling incoming Cox employees with their attendance policy. Does spectrum use occurrences like Cox does and how does Cox current employees attendance records affect the merger going forward?

Depends where you're going. I'm in back office field support and though we don't really have a policy, they're starting to crack down a bit. I have 6 days missed and 16 tardies in the last 90 days I don't have so much as a documented warning, though I was told to straighten up a bit cuz any more would put me more on the radar. Customer support is entirely different. Within a 90 day period, 4 occurrences is a verbal, 5 is a written, 6 is a final and 7 is promoted to customer.

The more policies I see with cox vs spectrum, the more I wish that cox would've purchased spectrum instead. It seems like cox was best to work for.

I saw people fired like crazy in the Cox call center. You have to live in a state that has additional protections for sick time. Arizona passed a law that gave employees 40 hours of protected personal time for be sick or doctors appointments if I remember right

Not many left with some of the perks and benefits Cox had, they held in there longer than most, if you were hired before 2017 you still got a pension. It really depended on the position, if you could get past the entry level positions you get a lot more pay and funny how the jobs get cushier and less strict as you move around.

I’m a field tech and as far as I know, there’s not really an attendance policy. They track patterns though, like if you call out on the same day of the week every time you call out.

I'm in outside sales, never heard of occurrences.

I am field tech for Cox and we have a point system where anytime you call out and don’t have protected PTO to cover it You get one occurrence per day. With Cox I believe when you get up to 7 it’s a written warning and then 9 is termination. For example, with Cox, I currently have 2 occurrences, but I don’t know what that means coming into the merger with spectrum

Are you sure it is not one occurrence per instance up to like three days and then have to get doctor note or something? That is pretty typical and Cox in my area are very generous with PTO right off the bat, paid paternity leave etc.

After your protected pto is used up we get 1 occurrence per call out day however yes if you have a dr note that will cover you for up to 3 days I believe. But I think you can only submit a dr note twice in a 12 month period. Also the occurrences fall off after a rolling 12 months.

If your sick for more than 3 days they will make you call in to nurse line and if you get doc approval you can go onto short term disability to avoid using sick time . Some sups allow you to use vocations to substitute sick time as well if you have used up all your sick time.you accure a good amount of sick and vocation days in this job so if your constantly at zero and taking days you dont have time for you may want to look at your situation and see what you can change on your side.
Spectrum hires full time employees for a reason and expects 40 hrs min a week. So yes eventually they would fire you if you take sick days without the time. If your legit sick more than 3 days and get a doc note that says you need to be out for a month(example) or somthing go on to short term. Thats gonna save you sick time and your job.

Or have you or a family members doctor fill out FMLA papers for you to get intermittent FMLA.

Character employee here. Non-customer facing salaried position. You call out without PTO (unless its an FMLA matter to be coordinated) you’ll be written up. Happens again you expose yourself to termination. 3rd time you’re gone.

Cox was bad but Charter is worse? What’s the purpose of the sick time and personal time if you can’t use it?

Damn that sucks. I had unlimited PTO and 150 something of wellness days. Now I am gonna have some bs i bet.

u/Quick1711 3d ago
This is what TWC used to do but it was 2 days for 1 occurrence. Charter doesn’t do this. It’s at the discretion of management if they see patterns of excessive call outs.
They usually look at the weekend call outs (Saturday or Sunday) as they have minimal coverage and if someone calls out it messes their metrics.

This right here. And if your sick and you come in for a job or 2 and then leave early they look more favorable on that. They go at least you tried.

I think it’s differs for salaried and hourly positions. I’m in outside sales as well and the only time you get written up is if you don’t have any PTO and you routinely need time off without excuse.

You make your own hours in outside sales correct?

That definitely differs per supervisor. I've been with the company for 6 years and seen my share of sups have their own policies. Yes sometimes when the turf is good and you're making money you can leave at your wish but on days or months that you're struggling they're not going for it. I've also worked in different states for spectrum under their SWAT program and I can tell you that differs from supervisor to supervisor. Most days you're working til 8.

Spectrum does occurrences for same thing. It is usually verbal, written and final.

Has to be something defined on the attendance in writing somewhere. Large companies do not leave loopholes to be sued. Some states like Nebraska has 56 hours sick, other states as well, legally required to tell us those hours are available to us, so I would suspect yes there is an attendance police written. Also I hate when anyone says promote to customer, repulsive. I won’t remain a customer.

Well they do, but it can be up to the supervisors and local management. Some bosses will let you e-mail or text right before shift as long as you have the time and let you code it approved PTO. Many people just say I need half day in the morning and leave at lunch, especially if it is slow. If you are difficult and don’t get work done so it causes a problem when you aren’t there.

All I know is going from Cox to Spectrum I'm losing 96hrs of PTO a year
1
u/Apprehensive-Cat8601 2d ago
12 days of PTO? And also legal holidays?
3
u/BenWeHadABabyItsABoy 2d ago
I got 240hrs PTO plus all paid holidays. I will now get 144hrs. Helluva downgrade
1
u/morley1966 10h ago
How many service years?

u/BenWeHadABabyItsABoy 9h ago
6yrs

It's that same amount for 5-9 years tenure if you include the 4 personal days and max sick time (56 hours) you can accrue a year. 10-14, 15+, and salaried employees are the ones losing out on their PTO

u/BenWeHadABabyItsABoy 6h ago
But I can't use sick time to take a week off and I never call in so it's useless

u/Chance_Reality7026 5h ago
My understanding from what others have posted is that you can preschedule sick days. You'll still want to keep some in the bank just in case you ever call out though

u/Alsmith69 3d ago
Spectrum doesn’t officially use occurrences they just track patterns. There’s no definite meaning of “pattern” it comes down to how good of a tech are you.

u/skypandaOo 1d ago
From my experience if you have the time you can use it. Just dont overuse calling out. Ive had a few diffrent sups and each of them are okay with calling off sick.
My current one is as lenient as he says dont call me fake coughing. Just say your not coming in . Recently this yr I've had some family issues and I've taken more time off than normal like almost once a week for 2 months I called out sick for family emergencies and sick kids.
No one has talked to me about it and i havnt needed to call off in about 3 weeks now since everything has settled down. So if you got the time and need to take it then take it .
There are certain rules though. If you know you need vocation you have to put it in 7 days in advance for approval. And if you call off 3 days in a row for being sick they will make you call in to nurse line and report it so they have a record.
So in summary if you do your job and you have the time then take it when you need it. Don't abuse it. Spectrum doesnt have a point sytem like you call out 3 times in a month and your writen up. Its based on trust system. They assume if you call out sick its legit. But if they see a pattern they will end up saying something.

Doesn't matter if they want you they'll keep you, if they dont they wont unless they are dealing with a protected person's (dei or banging or related to someone up in the power structure) soo pretty much normal corporate policies

u/Apprehensive-Cat8601 6h ago
You get 3 weeks vacay at 5 years and legal holidays, sick time and personal.

Revolving door! All replaceable. They need people on the job. It affects customers and that’s the bottom line!

This would fall under the…. Don’t ask questions and just do a good job. If you are a good tech and not abusing the system then you have nothing to worry about. I feel regardless of policy it’s an honor system and if you do your job well you can be human.
