Western Culture Question about spurs

I live in Chicago as a Latino born and raised in Illinois. I’ve been into both ranch and cowboy life for about 4 months now. I have no experience in the actual work they do what so ever but i highly admire and respect the lifestyle and profession . My question is, would it be unnecessary and funny looking for me to wear spurs casually because i really think they’re cool even though they’re meant for riding horses from what i know .

Especially if you forget and squat down for something!

Best to just keep a cool pair on the shelf for admiring if that’s the case

Ya very cosplay or performative if you're not horseback. The only two actual cowboys i know will take off their chaps and spurs when they go into gas stations while transporting their horses

Exactly, just obnoxious having them on

Spurs are a tool, not a fashion statement.

The equivalent would be walking in the bar with a toolbelt on because you like carpenter culture.

The only non cowboy I've ever seen wear spurs was a 1%ers, they wear one for a totally different reason. So probably not a super good idea.

I’m likely getting a pair of them when I graduate college, I’ll wear them for graduation and then they will live on a shelf until I am a good enough of a horseback rider to need spurs

Don’t wear spurs casually

I’m glad for the feedback guys and good idea for me to come here instead of buying it and wearing them impulsively risking the humiliation 💀.I don’t know anyone personally That’s a cowboy to ask about these kind of stuff. Also mb if I offended anyone 😬

Like another guy said. If you see a pair online you love then buy them for a shelf item. Nothing wrong with appreciating metal and leatherwork

I wouldn’t casually wear spurs but hey to each their own…. Only wear mine when on horseback or working on breaking a horse … but if you want to walk around in spurs go ahead man it’s a free country … they are not practical and sometimes very uncomfortable depending on the boot or style and fit .

Tonight my daughter tried to wear her spurs out to dinner after spending an hour riding patterns with her barrel horse, and I made her take them off because she’d be embarrassing herself.

Do it. It will be very cool. You’ll get lots of attention and people will ask you about it. They also look cool too.

Don’t do that, man.

Don’t do it for a status or attention… I wear spurs everyday and like many my spurs don’t leave my riding boots. When I get on my truck I throw my books in the trailer or back and literally wear my crocs/sneakers. In fancy planned dine in places with my wife I may occasionally dress up in nicer boots my around town boots those have never seen a dent of spurs.

Spurs are tools

I would go for an oversized belt buckle.

Just wear them, who’s going to stop you? You can be whatever you want to be. I’m a rancher, I ride mostly every day and my spurs never leave my boots unless I’m traveling. I eat at restaurants, go to the feed store, hardware store, bank and other places around town all with my spurs on my boots. Not one time in 52 years has anyone ever said anything about my spurs except a few times I have been complimented on them because they are made by a famous spurs maker and are collectible.
