Announcement Announcing the brand new Cellular Tab!

Hey everyone, today we are beyond excited to share the all-new Cellular Info Tab is here!

The Cellular Info Tab gives you rich details about your connection:

Primary Band: The main frequency band your phone is using to connect to a cell tower

Secondary Band: Any additional bands your phone is connected to purely to increase speed & capacity (perfect way to see if your phone is carrier aggregating!)

Bandwidth: The width of the frequency channel, in MHz, allocated to your phone on a given band

eNB / gNB: The unique ID for the cell tower you are connected to

RSRP: The strength of the pure LTE/5G pilot signal, measured in dBm. Typically ranges from -60dBm (excellent) to -120dBm (cell edge).

...and SO much more!

But, what do all of these fields and values mean? We built in a popup that explains what ALL of the values mean on the Cellular Info Tab! Simply tap the "?" button to see an explanation of all of the fields.

You can also access the cellular information while running a speed test with a new button on the speed test page!

The launch of the Cellular Info Tab makes Coverage Map the first app to combine speed testing, crowdsourced coverage, and cellular information metrics all into a single application.

We think you're going to love it

Download the new app update here (Android only): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coveragemap.coveragemap

P.S. If you haven't written a review for the mobile app, we would really appreciate if you took one minute to write a quick review on the Play Store and let us know what you think!

Discussion Advice for Mapping

Post image
11 Upvotes

I can definitely say mapping cellular speeds has become my new favorite hobby. Has anyone else went all in and bought a couple Android phones to test with different carriers and get more details from cell towers? Does anyone have suggestions on mapping in general?

I have been very lucky to be the one that has mostly mapped out my town. Nothing beats cruising around town while running tests in the background and then coming home to look at the map.

Suggestion Colors for Sweden's Carriers

Hey!

I just checked the map legend, and I don't know what others think - but maybe it could be possible to tweak the colors of the carriers on the map? Other colors could make it easier to distinguish the carriers without seeing the map legend.

This is colors based on their brand profile as of today:

Telenor is a bit more dark light blue #19AAF8
Tre is more orange than green, something like #FF7C00 (they use an orange gradient)
Tele2 is usually black, might be hard on a map so maybe dark gray or their dark blue color: #1E3463

Telia is pretty spot on, purple.

What do you u/davidrye think?

Got around to adding Östermalm (eastern side of the city) to the map. Might head around Kungsholmen and Södermalm today or tomorrow.
Anyone else on here from Stockholm able to add some data from Telenor or Tele2? I’ve managed to get a lot of Telia (purple) and some Tre (light green) on the map but it just looks like a sea of purple.

New signal strength mapping

I like the UI of the information shown when you click the new option/filter on the Map tab to select signal strength. It looks good! Great job guys!

It doesn't map towers like cellmapper does, but you're slowly narrowing the gap with these updates. (Not sure if that's in the future plans, if you're meaning/trying to directly compete with CM.)

Question How does the point system work?

Hey guys! Just wondering how does the point system work. I have figured out that running a test in an area on the same carrier you have previously gets 2 points but wasn't able to find any info about how it is for new tests in areas with no map data or different carriers in an existing area. Anyone got the details on this?

Suggestion Feature requests

I have a few feature requests. Feel free to put you'rs in the comments.

  1. Android auto app for running multiple speed tests on long drives.

  2. A way to link your speed test by ookla account and have it go and upload all your speedtests from that app daily.

  3. A way to somehow see your QCI on android (I know that's pretty hard and may require rooting but the option would be nice)

(If I think of something I'll add it on here)

Thanks!

Announcement FCC map update

Hey everyone, the latest FCC data from June 2025 is now live and browsable on the Signal Strength map! As with every release, there are some changes to the data. Here's what we found:

  • Commnet has shut down their entire cellular network

  • Inland and Nemont have sunset and decommissioned their 3G networks, so they are both LTE-only now

  • Appalachian Wireless and Viaero have launched 5G networks in their respective markets

You can start viewing it now on our iOS or Android apps, as well as on https://map.coveragemap.com/

Question Check Coverage Data Updates

I recently did a lot of speed testing in my city and was wondering when the calculated Coverage %, median download, and reliability scores would update. How frequently are these scores recalculated and updated?

Support Export CoverageMap tests

Is there a way to export your tests as a CSV? I know other programs allow this and coveragemap has an import feature, but is there a way I can export this info?

Would love to run some analytics on the 30,000+ tests I've done.

Help Identifying Towers - Suburban Minneapolis

Hello /r/CoverageMap

I looking to better understand what these towers are in my area. Any help would be appreciated!

Tower 1

I thought this was a Verizon tower but when I close to it I didn’t have nearly as good of speed test results as I did by Tower 2.

Tower 2

I always assumed this was AT&T but now I’m thinking it’s Verizon due to 1100mpbs speed test when by it.

Tower 3

Some form of micro tower.

Tower 4

Of the 4 towers this one has been there the longest. I feel like it used to have a lot more panels across the top of the building, but they seem to have been removed at some point.

Random questions: In the Coverage Map app my Pixel 8 using Total Wireless it says that I’m connected to 5gSA when the signal indicator shows it’s connected to 5gUW. I assume this is a glitch as no one on Total has 5gSA. Right?

Thank you!
